A little before my political times, but Surely not Pab. I had you down as roughly from the same generation as myself. Callaghan was in the main a decent and honourable man and a good socialist. No place for him in the modern Labour party then . R.I. P.

Surely not Pab. I had you down as roughly from the same generation as myself. R.I. P. Im 38. I was only 12 ish when he was in power. Started to become aware of the political world when scenes of miners being trampled under horses where making the headlines. Really started to take an interest when Michael Foot ( a man of true principles ) was the party leader. How old are you ( ish ), had you down for mid 20s ( now if you will retract the above statement and return the compliment please ;D )

very true Callaghan was an honourable man in the old Christian socialist tradition wrong on more issues than he was right on but a gentleman and unlike todays politicians a man of principle Jim Callaghan may well have been "wrong" on certain policy issues but where he, and many of the politicians of his generation, where right were in an approach to policitics that accorded ordinary people a certain amount of dignity in their lives. Under Thatcherism it was a fight against a return to the unemployment of the 1930's. You can criticise Mr. Blair and his government but at least you can't criticise its record on full employment - something which is now taken for granted.
