cos I'm sure you'll have been there...
Been trying to think for a couple of days(cant think why, funny things go on in the sub-conscious) which Town player finished off the career of George Yardley of Tranmere.
I think it was my all time hero Sir Alf but I aint certain, can you help, cheers.

I will butt in here if you don't mind. Alf definitely put him in the RSI (remember people singing "Send him to the RSI" for years after, when opposition players were injured). He was in hospital for weeks I think. I remember because I was not there I had a cold or something and was not allowed to go - my Dad came home and told me about this terrible tackle by Alf Wood and the bloke immediately looking very ill. A kick to his kidney I think

Cheers Scooter, had a feeling it was Alf.
Seem to remember as Yardley was lying face down on the ground Alf "walked"over his back, thus causing the problem you talk of.
Very Beckhamesque if I remember correctly, but may be mistaken.
Cheers..............

I was there and remember the tackle from Sir Alf.
T'was horrible. Just as well we did not have film of it. X-Rated.
But it was Alf Wood and he could do no wrong in my book

Had a busy day so have only just seen this.
It was Alf, I wasn't there but my Dad was. He was so disgusted that he refused to watch Town again until Alf left the club.
He said Wood should have been arrested for GBH and it was the most cowardly act he had ever seen. (Dad was a D Day veteran and had strong views on how real men should behave and it didn't include kicking people in the liver)
