Just been watching some mind-blowing, thought provoking stuff. First programme- "Skint". Dealt with people in Birmingham who, for various reasons, are having a tough time and have to rely on pawning their possessions to survive from week to week.
What struck me was that, however they may be labelled by respectable society, they do try, they do care.
There was a man selling the big issue. He'd got a 10 year old son. What I found touching was that he was choosing good food, fruit and vegetables, for his son, because he said the boy loved Football, and needed good food.
This was a man that had suffered a few breakdowns, and society would label him "inadequate" because he found it difficult to survive in this complicated world- but he really tried.
Then there was a programme about prostitutes in Sheffield. They focused on one who had had such a bad start in life, such a background of instability and abuse.
I know about girls like this- my daughter works as a teacher in a residential unit for girls like this- often with a background of abuse, drugs and prostitution.
Like the girl on T.V.- they often attempt suicide or self-harm.
It seems appropriate, coming in a week where we'd discussed abortion and sanctity of life issues.
Made me think- as a Christian, I find it REALLY challenging- because I know it's not about church rituals and things- Jesus would have had more approval for the woman who went out in a van every night, befriending these girls and giving them a warm drink and advice. It's not easy to get out of that life they're in.
It really shook me up and made me think- here in my comfortable house and parents who made it possible for me to get qualified to do a nice job.
It even put it in proportion about getting SO hung up about my teams results!!
Of COURSE I want my team to stay up and keep going up. They're my team and I love them. But it just made me think how blessed I am to have all that I have- and to be able to go and support my team.
I have choice. These people on the margins of society are just fighting to survive.
It's late - but I hope you don't mind my sharing that!!
(Anyone watch it?)
