O.K- I brought it on myself. School holidays from last Friday, decent weather, so, after a winter of more or less sedentary occupations, I've gone all out to tidy the garden. Mr Wiggy does the grass cutting- but I do the flower beds and weeding- and digging over the soil. Now I'm so stiff I can hardly move!! I should know better. When you do Sports you do warm-up exercises, when I did dancing as a kid, we did warm-up exercises and stretching and things. I just charge out into the garden and dig with unused muscles. I'm going to be hobbling into the Meadow like someone of 90 if I don't put it right!!! Any advice?

I used to do a number of back stetches before I played rugby/tennis/footy matches etc.
Hot bath, lie on your stomach, get a massage .
Deep heat,
they work for me

As a regular back sufferer, I find warm baths, Hot water bottles and heat pads on the sore parts most helpfull. I do take regular painkillers and anti-inflamentry drugs, but warmth the most releiving. I hope your better soon Pauline

My old man used to suffer with a bad back for years and he used to swear by lying on a hard floor with a hot water bottle under the offending area.
Failing that find a good osteopath(sp).I know you are in Wigan but there is a chap in Shrewsbury...Bill Khazarr who lives in Sutton Road who sorted my back out a couple of years ago when I did mine in at work a couple of years ago. When I go to work tonight I'll get his number off a lad who uses him regular and also swears by him and post in on here for you if you wish. You may even get in Friday afternoon/evening before the cambridge match.

As a nurse i should be able to help, as someone off sick at the mo with a bad back, i cant All above very good advice. If it continues after a week of warmth, rest, anti inflams, go to your doc, sometimes backache can be easily self diagnosed, but sometimes it can signal something worse like kidney problems or even an anuerysm.

Got to go with the warm bath and collapse on a hard floor for a few hours, then gentle stretch exercises. Knees to chest whilst on the floor followed by adding some hip twists, then stand and twist your upper torso, followed by bends and stretches. I must advice you to keep an eye out for young children who will see nan/mom on the floor and thinks its a trampoline game. This may leave you worse off than when you started ! Good luck

Wiggy
Having had virtually every kind of treatment I can highly recommend the following as a ggod way of easing your back before or after any problems.
1. Lie flat on your tum arms alongside your body and just relax into the floor, do this for 2 or 3 minutes.
2. Put your hands flat on the ground under your shoulders with your arms bent and slowyl push up until your arms are at 90 degrees - this should produce a nice arch in your lower back, try to keep your hips against the floor. Hold this for about 30 secs and relax. Repeat 3-5 times.
3. If 2 above feels OK, try to extend it so that you straighten your arms out full length and get a real extension of the arch in your lower back. Try to centre any discomfort you might feel into the centre of your lower back, but don't push too far if it hurts.
At the completion of the above, go back to 1 and relax for 5 minutes

I don't think it's anything other than ordinary backache- because I've had it before- and usually in the summer, when I go out in the garden and overdo things, or carry heavy things. It doesn't feel any different than it usually does! I'll try the above remedies- and see if I can persuade Mr Wiggy to give me a massage!!! (Well- I'd do the same for him!!!)
