Having read Gary Peter's report and the Shrewsweb review of the match, I think I was at the wrong match. We were woeful at the front and woeful at the back and the supposed 5 in midfield... well....?
In defence, we had plenty there, because we kept retreating, but we were completely disorganised, leaving a surprising number of gaps for the Darlo team to get through. we were often saved purely due to our numbers, not our skills. Problems were not only shown by the goals, but also the excellent saves that Howie pulled off. Up front, Sammy showed great spirit and there were a few good runs through, but there was seldom any support to allow breks to be followed through and the imetus was lost. Occasionally we showed pressure and would get corners which never got anywhere near the box and tended to result in the ball being cleared back to our end.
Like at Sc***horpe, we gave them too much respect. Rather than challenge, we would hold off and retreat, letting Darlo pass the ball with freedom, resulting in Darlo spending most of the game in our half. We were hardly in the game or the running during the 90 mins and Peters needs to go back to stage one and sort out defence as well as the forwards. I know, we had suspensions and injuries, but there always needs to be a plan B if we are going to progress in the league.
Under Peters I have seen Sc***horpe and Darlington and have been unimpressed with both games and saw greater spirit in the team under Quinn. That was what I felt was missing from the game - spirit and determination to win!
Rant Over!
