Sorry if this is widely known, but a question has been bugging me for a while about one of our chants.
What is it exactly that some STFC fans sing to the tune of "Play up Pompey"? I've heard something along the lines of "I owe Shrewsbury" for quite a while and simply don't get it. Please, please, please don't tell me that we thought Pompey fans sing "I owe Pompey" and copied it. We'd be the most disastrously ignorant bunch of fans around as bar you'll never walk alone that has to be the most well known couple of lines out there!
I'm seriously hoping that there is a genuine spark of creative genius here that's passed me by (wouldn't be the first time) ...

A question that has bugged me too Danny I must admit...
And what happens to the 'And we will fight fight fight for the Shrewsbury til we win Division 3' if we get promoted?
Or indeed the prelude to that line, 'From the banks of the River Severn to the shores of Sicily' if we ever go on tour to Japan....

Ant, do they? I really have never noticed.
I still don't get it mind. It's Pompey's song and unless we've got some witty take on it (which from what I can tell we probably haven't) then, as far as I can see, we're best leaving it alone ...

Surely the Pompey song, or "Pompey Chimes", as it takes its tune from a peal of bells, uses the "words" Ay-O Pompey, not "I owe", even though it sounds the same.

Just checked on Pompey-fans.com. The chimes were derived from the hourly sounding of the clock, on the city's Guildhall. The words used by them are "Play up Pompey, Pompey play up". They say that the song has been adopted by other clubs, using words such as "Ay-O Barnsley, Barnsley Ay-O" Wonderful thing, Google.
