Don't often read about Shrewsbury in popular books, but just finished "The Ripple Effect" by Dominic Holland which features STFC in a cliffhanger end of season match (excellent novel BTW) and am now reading "Ricky" by Ricky Tomlinson who (despite confusing these parts with Wales) makes a lot of references to the Town - mostly due to being banged up in the nick for "illegal" picketting. Anyone come across any other recent literary references to the Town? (BTW, it was the thread about Spinal Tap that made me think of this in the 1st place, on account of the shirt).

Dominic Holland is actually a Brentford supporter.
He is a regular guest of Hawksbee and Jacobs on Talksport and is a very funny bloke.

The ripple effect is a quite fantastic read. I recommend it to anyone.

Steve Claridge's Tales from the Boot Camps mentions a couple of Town games that he played in. As they were games I saw, it's interesting to contrast the points of view.
Other than that we're mentioned 3 times in the News section of the December When Saturday Comes.

an inspector morse book has morse and lewis coming up to salop to interview a nurse. brendan behan was rude about the town in one of his books. nigel hawthorne sang shrewsburys praises in the scarlet letter.
likely lads, operation good guys, jim bowen and harry secombe have all mentioned shrewsbury for comic effect.
daniel defoe wrote about his visit to shrewsbury in the 1700's.
anyone know anymore?

"The Recruiting Officer" by George Farquhar a comedy first performed in 1706 was set in town with characters based on local people. Danial Defoe in the same decade described the town as "beautiful, large, pleasant & populous.....full of gentry & yet full of trade". I must get out more......

surprised nobody has mentioned "Once" by James Herbert, the whole Story was based on the outskirts of Shrewsbury, and the RSH gets loads of mentions.

slightly tangential maybe, but Becks sings Gary Peters' praises in his autobiography. Apologies if this has been mentioned before.

There have been at least 3 songs called "A shropshire Lad" taking their title from the orginal gay Worcestrian A E Housman.
1. Half Man Half Biscuit, which I've just been listening to and which reminded me about this thread
2. John Betjeman which is about Matthew Webb which I've got but haven't been listening to
3. In the early sixties there was a single released by "Rick & the Hayseeds" which I heard once on Radio Luxembourg but never bought (shame. mind you a single was 3 weeks pocket money and I was buying the Kingsmen & Booker T). Does anyone have any information about it or them???
