I had a smart meter fitted for my electricity with Eon Next and suddenly my electricity bill doubled and trebled,I complained and they were not interested so I then got it replaced all of this 3 months , I complained again and got nowhere as there responce was you been billed for what you have used.
It has taken me Eight months to sort out, during this time my bill showed I owed them £1.300 After getting this resolved my bill now shows I'm £63.29 in credit and I got them to pay me back £157.86 for the duel rate meter that I was charged that was clearly faulty.
Thankful finally got someone in the company to do there job properly. I have solar power and batteries and I was able to produce the data from give energy that showed what I had actually used. It has been one long nightmare.
If I had not been able to sort this I would have been faced with a huge bill and my credit rating would have been affected.

Had a similar problem with my mother in laws property whilst it was being sold. Empty for 2 years she carried on paying what they asked for. Just before she sold it showed a credit of £300, this mysteriously disappeared just before it was due to be refunded as they said there was an error and wanted an extra £200 ish… 2 years to sort, she never got a refund but never paid the balance. She didn’t have a smart meter BTW, it’s Eon Next not smart meters in general I believe.

This looks like the electricity consumers version of the Post Office IT scandel - our "Smart" meters are so smart they couldn't possibly be wrong.

I've got an old meter , I've had a couple of letter over the last few years basically saying , it's needs to be modernised under law x and rule y , I have a feeling my meter is if anything on my side of 'wrong ' if that makes sense and want to keep it obviously , I think I'll use this faulty smart meter stats as a stick to beat them off with for the time being

We got one installed about 3 years ago but it's never actually worked. The engineer who installed it said it wasn't connecting but should be fine in 24 hours (it wasn't),I rung the supplier at the time and they said it would take up to 30 days (it still didn't). We did get someone round to take another look but they were claiming they were subcontractors and I'd need to take it up with the supplier, I thought I had which was why this person was there! Anyway, I gave up with it so still use the old meters and give updates that way

This fiasco should be investigated by the regulator's but it won't as they are paper tigers, this is a well-known problem from people iv spoken to who have had issues with them, the electricity company always say pay for what you have used, deny there is a problem, it takes months to sort out. In my previous dealings with Eon next they have always been very unhelpful, now iv got this nightmare over with I will be changing suppliers. My gas company e mail every week wanting to fit a smart meter well they can take a long run off a short pier

I haven't got a smart meter, but e-on insisted on changing the meter I already had. I went from £500 credit tto £1,098 debit. I was very unwell at the time and the shock could have finished me off completely! My meter readings are all over the place. According to e-on, we must be having raves at night time, because that's when consumption is running away. They are going to look into it apparently.

Another big scandal is that despite gas and oil being secured through Middle Eastern countries who’ve increased supply to offset the loss from Russia within a year of the war on Ukraine starting, and a drop in the worldwide price of these assets, that somehow the regulator has avoided sharply decreasing the unit price as well as the standing charge.
Record profits from energy companies continue and the government does nothing about it. I understood the price leaping at the time the Ukrainian war started and the sanctions but today there’s a lot of price gouging going on given that supply has all stabilised.
Petrol prices are another area where there’s some dodgy stuff happening.
Isn’t the government meant to provide balance and help people? I’ll hold my breath I guess… they’d rather let people freeze than tax energy companies.

My lad had an issue with Severn Trent and his water meter. They kept sending him bills that were showing his usage as being that of a very large family, when there were two people living in the house. He argued the toss and they sent out someone to check. Nothing wrong, all working fine. Still the bills kept coming and the engineers kept telling him the meter was not faulty.
He then decides to have a new kitchen fitted, so went out to turn the water off at the meter. Turned off the water for another 6 houses. They had put the meter in the wrong place, before the joint instead of after it and were billing him for 7 houses worth of water usage.

My daughter complained about her electric bill and had them check her meter. Don't think it was a smart one. It was then changed and her next bill was for £9,800. It was for historical undercharging based on estimated readings. This is a quite normal 4 bedroom house,2 adults, 2 young children!!!
I helped her try to make sense of the figures but the company don't make it east for you. They don't actually communicate with you, it's all computer generated standard letters. They insisted she owed this money for about six months but luckily she's a tough cookie and wouldn't give in.
Without explanation, the bill was reduced to £600 Just out of the blue. That's £9,200 knocked off and nothing said, no admittance it was an error and no apology.

Are the vast majority of our utility companies foreign owned? Don't want to sound like a rampant nationalist/little Englander, but if a political party stood at the next election with an avowed intention of renatinalising the utilities, railways etc I would imagine that they would do well

. I'm not surprised so many company's now are a disgrace, they also tender out a lot of work to subcontractors.

Whilst I'm glad that your daughter has got it sorted, this is happening on a large basis and the utility companies are not interested in sorting out or doing anything about customers who have anbnormal readings, as I mentioned in my first post once the new meter was fitted my bill doubled then trebled from my previous use

We have been resisting having a smart meter for years, to the extent of refusing to allow a fitter access to the house to fit one.
There’s lots of pressure from the energy company, mainly along the lines of it will save us money and claiming the meter we have is obsolete. They don’t say how money will be saved and after 45 years in the same house we know what our energy usage is.

back in the mid/late 80s I was told a story, not sure of the accuracy of it but I guess there could be some truth, about how the water board were installing meters and had to buy the cheapest due to government rules, British water meters were of great quality but cost £10 each, instead they had to opt for the inferior French models that often needed replacing, because they were sold at the cheaper price of just £9.99 each

Unfortunately Britain has turned into rip off central, with so many utility company's customers services are rubbish, trying to resolve issues seems a slog,
We have the discrace of water companies dumping sewage intoseas and rivers, a former prestigiousrace even the Oxford Cambridge boat race was marred by competitors getting ill from inhaling water vapour from the polluted river. This country has turned into a banana republic
