The Court of Appeal has quashed the convictions of 39 former Post Office workers who were found guilty of stealing money from the company, according to the Press Association. The former sub-postmasters and postmisstresses had been convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting because of the Post Office's defective Horizon accounting system Lord Justice Holroyde said at the Court of Appeal ruling today that the Post Office "knew there were serious issues about the reliability of Horizon" and had a "clear duty to investigate" the system's defects. But the Post Office "consistently asserted that Horizon was robust and reliable", and "effectively steamrolled over any subpostmaster who sought to challenge its accuracy". But look at this: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9028555/Now-disgraced-ex-Post-Office-boss-Paula-Vennells-forced-55k-NHS-job.htmlEx-Post Office CEO Paula Vennells walked away from IT scandal with over £400,000 in pay and bonuses Vennells left the Post Office in 2019 just prior to a damaging High Court judgment, which slammed the management of the company that punished subpostmasters for mistakes made by its own computer system. She over £400,000 in pay and bonuses with her.

Disgraceful but not unexpected. No one seems to take responsibility for anything these days.
I only hope that those treated so badly can now get on with their lives in some way because I don’t see how anyone can ever forget such a dreadful wrong.

Excellent and shocking at the same time www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/m000jf7jIt's a scandalous story. I hope those people wrongly accused can recover fully from the psychological damage they've suffered. It must have been horrible for them. I hope, too, that it sets a valuable precedent that computer systems should not be relied upon to be faultless. Your link is a timely reminder that journalism is so often a vital public service and a check on the rich and powerful, as it should be. Stories like this should be remembered when "the press" is being harangued for the doings of its grubbier practitioners or its massively rich foreign owners.

It wasn't necessarily that there were actual faults with the system, it would appear that one of the main problems was that the Post Office thought that only the Post Masters/ Mistresses were able to alter the figures on the system when all along the Engineers could go in "out of hours" on the system and meddle without the knowledge of the PM's and this had some bearing with some of the tweeks obviously making figures misbehave and double up etc.

Yes, I should have said "internal control systems" rather than "computer".

Hopefully the millions they should receive in compensation will help.... on one level it might ; but it wont give them back the time they lost worrying they could go to prison or dealing with the looks and snide comments, the loss of there good name and a lot more they have been treated like a criminal or the impact on there physical and mental health .

That’s the point no amount of money can compensate for having their lives totally ruined through no fault of their own.

Hopefully the millions they get can in some way increase their quality of life for the rest of their lives.
Hopefully none have to work again, can pay off mortgages and hopefully have a really great retirement they deserve after this.

Hopefully none have to work again, can pay off mortgages and hopefully have a really great retirement they deserve after this. The taxpayer will have to pay for that. Paula Vennells and others from the senior management at the Post Office, who knew there were serious issues about the reliability of Horizon and had a clear duty to investigate the system's defects, will not. She even keeps her CBE 'for services to the Post Office'.

'she should be made to give it back, all her pay out should be returned and she should be barred from any government post'
It probably counts as a qualification these days-unless she falls out with Carrie

Coincidence?

If she’d got one shred of decency she’d give it up. Here comes that shred of decency, her being a priest I suppose. Shame she backed a computer system over loyal decent people.

No money can rectify the suffering and humiliation caused.

No money can rectify the suffering and humiliation caused. I'm not saying money makes up for it, I'm merely saying I hope they get a fortune and have a much better retirement than they could've dreamt for and hopefully find some peace and enjoy themselves. It won't make it right, but they may feel a bit better hopefully.
