Rabada showing a lack of class.
....and at the moment bowling to a 7- 2 field with every ball 2 feet outside off stump...ultra negative or what.

Another excellent knock from Ben Stokes. Hopefully Ollie Pope can now follow suit after surviving that review.

Well that’s irritating. Smashed glass everywhere as my grandson had a strop about Curran getting out. Was in the kitchen making us tuna and parsley sandwiches and I disappointingly hear a refrain of “Not Shagger!”, followed by the tinkling of a St Albans Beer Festival pint glass smashing into hundreds of pieces.

This is more like it from England, runs on the board. Pressure now on the hosts. The declaration can't be far off.

Eng 481-8 The fastest half-century by an England batsman in Test cricket is 28 balls.
Mark Wood - yes Mark Wood - is putting that under serious threat.
He's got 35 from 19.
Wood whacks another 6 Wood 41*
Declared : 499-9, Pope 135*, Wood 42

Ollie Pope looks a real find, he's certainly improved a lot since he was thrown in at four against Pakistan a couple of years ago. In the space of the last two tests Sibley and now Pope look to be well on the way to establishing themselves and the top six, once Burns returns, is looking promising going forward.
Bess has also definitely improved since he first came into the side, I heard he has recently been away at a spin bowling camp and that looks to have been beneficial.
The biggest question mark at the moment is over Buttler and whether he is the right man to continue as keeper, with Foakes in the wings.

I really enjoyed that, one of my earliest cricket memories is seeing Don Kenyon and Peter Richardson making a big opening partnership at Dudley, presumably against Warks. Willie Watson was one of a rare breed who played for England at both football and cricket. Finally, a reminder of what a classical action Fred Truman had

Nortje dropped by Root at slip. Simple chance. Why wasn't Stokes fielding there?

3 dropped catches so far...
Dom Bess having a well earned break. Just a pity we don't have a second quality spinner in the team to support him.

A good effort by Nortje, he bats better than some of their batters do! Stokes get him, after finally getting a bowl.

A shame a few difficult chances went down but overall a good day for England. Hopefully we can get the remaining four wickets tomorrow before they get to the follow on target.

Going again in SA and England take a couple of quick wickets from Mark Wood, SA 35-2
12:17 WICKET - Elgar b Wood 15 (SA 16-1)
The way England are bowling and South Africa are batting, it's very, very dangerous to be a stump today. Mark Wood takes his first Test wicket in almost a year by sending Dean Elgar's off peg cartwheeling. Elgar was playing across a full, quick delivery and got an outside edge on to the dolly. What a mess.
12:37 WICKET - Hamza c Buttler b Wood 2 (SA 22-2)
Zubayr Hamza just never looked comfortable against Mark Wood. It's not much of a ball, but anything around 90mph can do funny things to a batsman. Down the leg side, hip height, Hamza following it and getting something on it. Jos Buttler does the rest. England might win this today...

3rd wicket signals Tea
13:38 WICKET - Malan lbw Root 12 (SA 44-3)
Now then. This will rumble on. Pieter Malan doesn't look happy. There is a definite spike on snicko, but that doesn't mean the noise was bat on ball. The on-field decision was out, so the benefit of the doubt stays with the bowler. In the scorebook, it says Pieter Malan is out. England have got through.

14:34 WICKET - Van der Dussen c Pope b Root 10 (SA 66-4) Ollie Pope that's an absolute worldie! What is it with England and short leg catches in South Africa? He leaps high to his left to pluck the ball one-handed out of the air after Root found Van der Dussen's inside edge. Pope can do no wrong in this match.
14:58 WICKET - De Kock c Wood b Root 3 (SA 74-5)
Dearie, dearie me. South Africa are having a shocker. Quinton de Kock plays his second dreadful shot of the day, slicing the ball to backward point off Joe Root. Mark Wood is the fielder there and he might just time his jump wrong but he manages to hang in the air to dive back and take the catch.
15:23 WICKET - Du Plessis c Pope b Root 36 (SA 83-6)
I'm not sure how Faf du Plessis didn't know he'd hit that. It was a thick edge onto pad and it was snaffled by Ollie Pope again at short leg. Root is loving this. Could he really get five? Could England win tonight?

The last wicket partnership was starting to get embarrassing. Our bowling wasn't exactly of the best. Stumps were in little danger of being hit.
