Yes, I'd give Stokes the job. Or possibly Denly with Stokes as vice captain with a view to Stokes taking over in a year or two. Burns could also be considered as captain (he has been Surrey's skipper). Or Moeen if he could get back in the side! Impressive captaincy for Worcs in the one day stuff. And Leach isn't exactly doing that well at the moment.

A worrying stat that I saw on the BBC site last night: "In the 10 Test matches Joe Root has played in 2019 he has scored 548 runs, at an average of 27.4."
Now that is worrying. I think he should stand down as captain and focus on his batting. Yes, I'd give Stokes the job. Or possibly Denly with Stokes as vice captain with a view to Stokes taking over in a year or two. I have never agreed with the idea of giving the captaincy to 'the best player in the team' policy. It never worked with Botham, and it didn't work with Boycott. Much prefer to see it go to a very good cricketer (Brearley comes to mind) with captaincy experience who may not quite be Test standard but makes up for that with tactical nous. Therefore I would give Vince, Denly or Malan a try. Joe Root is not the same player since he has been skipper, and some of his decisions are poor. Having said that it is difficult for the young chap to 'learn on the job' without a lot of captaincy experienced players to consult with or learn from.

I agree that giving Ben Stokes the job wouldn't be a good idea. Rory Burns is the man in the side with the most captaincy experience but I think it's too soon for him just yet. Another 12 months, assuming he continues to consolidate his place, and he'll be a candidate I think.

Root's record as captain isn't actually that bad, in terms of test matches won at least, it's just that he loses too many test matches. Of those who have captained England for a significant number of test matches only Brearley and Vaughan (very marginally) have a better win percentage. The problem for Root is that only two other captains, who captained for a significant number of test matches, have a worse lose percentage, one of those being Gower. England draw very few test matches under Root.

"We knew this was a possibility when we selected the squad."
He added: "I'm quite happy that Popey's got the capability of doing a good job for us."
Surrey's Pope, 21, has kept wicket in just five first-class games and would bat at number seven if he did take the gloves.

England's batsmen are facing another tough day out in New Zealand.
Meanwhile what a turnaround for David Warner. Couldn't buy a test run in the Ashes and now goes and scores an unbeaten triple hundred. Australia are again dominating against Pakistan.

Disappointed for Sibley, who I have championed to be given his chance, he seems to settle then loses wicket although that clout on his head will have messed his concentration up. We need a big Root innings to morrow he is due.Needs experience as does Crawley and Pope exciting times.

Great to see Root play such a fine innings and Burns continue to improve and consolidate his place. Burns averaging a tad under 40 since the start of the Ashes in the summer.

Definitely, Rory Burns has been doing a good consistent job at the top of the order. That was great disciplined batting from them both. More please!

England bring up 350, 350-5, Root 160*, Pope 35*
Lunch, England lead is 4, 379-5, Root 178*, Pope 46*
England 476, Root 226, Burns 101, Pope 75. Wagner 5-124. Last 5 wickets fell for just 21 runs which is a bit disappointing.
NZ 96-2, after being 28-2, trail by 5.
A soggy final day is predicted!

As a casual observer, am I right to think that Root came in as a one day captain and maybe still has things to learn regarding test matches, but he is the immediate future and capable of inspiring by example?

Root was appointed England test match captain without ever captaining the one day side. He's doing a decent job as England test match captain, his win percentage is very impressive, but he loses too many test matches.

48.4 overs Williamson dropped on 62 Oh no! This might be the worst drop I have ever seen. Kane Williamson has lobbed the ball to mid-wicket and Joe Denly has inexplicably spilled it. Jofra Archer was already running away celebrating. He couldn't comprehend how a professional cricketer could have dropped this. He didn't even look.

22:36 Jonathan Agnew BBC cricket correspondent Even if you took your 95-year-old grandma out in the garden now, in the dark, and threw her a tennis ball from five yards she'd catch that. Jofra Archer can't believe it. That was just one of those drop catches that you can't explain. How did he [Denly] drop that?

NZ 211-2 at lunch Williamson 96*, Taylor 84*. Williamson dropped twice once by Denly and also by Pope.

Match drawn, rain stopped play after 41 overs in which England failed to take a wicket.
NZ 241-2, Williamson 104*, Taylor 105*

Most of the bowlers I played with would have had Denly by the throat.

Captain Joe Root says he is proud of the way England...
"learned lessons quickly" in their Test series defeat in New Zealand.
There is certainly a lot for England to work on before the series starts in South Africa later this month.
