reasonstobecheerful.world/spains-happy-little-carless-city/Article is about Pontevedra, a small city of around 84k people. The more I read this, the more I couldn't help noticing the parallels between this place and our own beloved small city of around 84k people. Love the "metrominuto" map, the bit about getting small businesses on side but not pandering to them and how the historic centre (described as previously being " dead" and "full of drugs" - could literally have been lifted from a below the line shropshirestar.com comment about Shrewsbury Town centre) is now drawing in young families and reversing the trend of people ditching the place as soon as possible. Thoughts? Lessons here for Shropshire council perhaps?

I know Pontevedra reasonably well (my daughter lives and works there) and is a great place to visit if you get the chance. It has a vibrant centre, combining both historic and the new, and closely resembles Shrewsbury in both size and character (it's football team also plays in the third tier of the Spanish footballing pyramid). I don't know what the place was like before the changes to a car-less city centre but walking round it now is certainly a joy and reckon that Shrewsbury could learn a few lessons on how to revitalise a centre for the benefit of all.
