Hurst himself said that the aim that season was a mid-table finish. He was surprised to be in the play-offs. Morris, Henderson and Godfrey were key to that team. When was there ever a time when we had 3 loanees who were such a success? I said I thought we slightly overachieved but three exceptional young players werenโt the sole reason for our success. There was a combination of factors and Hurst was certainly one of them. I canโt agree that weโd have been relegation threatened strugglers if he had stayed given the money Askey had available and given how well he managed to do with the dross from the late Mellon era. The evidence simply does not support that argument. It's not a huge stretch to imagine that Ogogo, Brown and Rodman would have stayed if Hurst had, and there didn't seem to be anyone than Hurst himself chasing after Toto and Nolan. Henderson, Godfrey and to an extent Morris would have been big misses, but that's the spine of the squad still in place, and if you combine that with a couple of Askey's signings and the stability that would have come with a continuation of management rather than the slightly chaotic situation Askey inherited, I think we'd have done alright. Doubt we'd have been pushing for the top 3 all season again, but somewhere in the play-off mix. All hypothetical now of course, but we're allowed positive goes at the game too.

To give Hurst his dues he was at least a two season wonder - keeping us up after replacing Mellon was arguably a bigger achievement than coming within a whisker of promotion to The Championship.
He must have calculated that his stock was at an all-time high.
But how different things could have been for both ourselves and Hurst if he'd waited for an offer from a non-basket case club, rather than letting his ambition get the better of him.

No need to worry about Hurst. There are a large number of non league clubs in the area close to where he lives. He will be able to take things easy on the pay offs from Ipswich and Scunny for a couple of years.

Careless mistakes and poor discipline cost us, but we are a long way from bouncing on the L2 trapdoor.
