Dave Edwards, if can stay fit huge player for us.
Like how he tried asking the South Stand for more noise during a corner.
Personally wasn't expecting him to play many games but like a new signing....

We deserved the win. O'Leary had bugger all to do. Our Centre Halves were immense. Pierre was my motm. I thought he was absolute class.

Tough game today and I agree with a lot of what has been said previously on this thread especially about the back three. I thought Morison was a handful although technically not the most gifted but causes defences problems. Fey struggled but is better will ball to feet. I really liked the pace and energy of McCormick who IMO made a great debut and will develop in the coming weeks and months. Laurent brought more of a threat and a greater range of passing when he came on which was a big plus. We’ve got Whalley, super Shaun Whalley.....nuff said. Awesome goal from Giles, I doff my cap to the young lad.
My only concern was Love and I know it’s only the opening day of the season so I don’t want to be too harsh on him but I don’t think he looked that great.
Great result for the Town so happy as I still think Pompey will be promotion contenders, they played some quality football even if they didn’t threaten our goal too much.

fey is a funny one, ok his goal record appears ok but in reallity he does little for the team, imho.he deffo not someone who can get the ball and win it in the air or bulldoze defences,we sure need another option, He is a natural goal scorer but he's not going to magic chances up by himself. We could play Harry Kane upfront and he wouldn't score many as the current system is defence heavy.

Really pleased with that start. Been critical of Sam in the past so only fair tp give credit where credit's due. What a strike from Giles too, great crowd, all in all a good day out and a decent advert for this town side.
Cautiously optimistic about the future.

Cant really understand the positive comments on here about Portsmouth. Our keeper was hardly tested and Maaquiss the two million pound striker was a donkey. Very impressed with our three big central defenders. If we can keep them fit it is all looking good. A bit light up front but Im sure SR will sort that. I guess time will tell but I reckon they'll be up there this season. No idea about the stats but for the most part they had the ball and the majority of our play was to keep them at arms length. We managed it (and then managed to nick one at the other end). I'm not so sure the majority of others in the 3rd will be able to do the same. I thought they looked good.

Vincelot MoM for me by a country mile.
Excellent today.
The rest, well work that hard and show a bit more quality, well who knows.

I can't comment on the game as I wasn't there, but that's a cracking result.
I think "1-0 to the Shrewsbury" might be a regular fixture on the terraces this year.

The three centre halves were all excellent, that's what won us the game. If they all stay fit I think we'll have an excellent season. Hard to tell who is who from a distance. O'Leary - 7 - No real saves of note, caught everything. Williams - 9 Ebanks Landell - 8 Pierre - 9 Love - 7 - Solid no frills performance. Giles - 9.5 - Unbelievable player, not sure what he's doing playing in League One. Vincelot - 8 - His best game in a town shirt. A Grant-esque performance. Edwards - 8 - Looks to be at 100% which is great to see, covered so much ground getting in to the box and tracking back. McCormick - 8 Looks like he's got real quality. Looking forward to seeing more of him. Morrison - 5 - Won a lot in the air but struggled to link play up. Okenabirhie - 4 - Very quiet. Maybe give Whalley a start next week. Laurent and Whalley both looked lively when they came on. Eisa unlucky with the injury. In terms of negatives, we saw very little of the ball. I think that's partly down to the fact we were playing one of the best sides in the division and also partly down to the system we play. The ball out to the full backs was always on for them as we obviously had no wingers. It made it very easy for them to retain possession. We also need to do much better linking the attack and midfield. Morrison wins everything so we have to get bodies around him. The front two were very isolated and struggled link up play. Excellent start though, buzzing for Ricketts and the squad. Good solid team performance. Deserved the win, they only really troubled us from set pieces and from throwing aimless long balls into our box in the last 10 minutes. Where did 6 minutes come from? The 3 CBs were outstanding, can’t separate them in their performance. I thought Vincelot was an unsung hero. Can’t agree that Giles was outstanding, he has been much better during pre-season I thought he struggled especially in the first half with the pace of the game as did McCormick. But an absolute wonder strike worthy of winning any match. The introduction of Laurent was the key. Took the game to Pompey, forced them to play backwards and allowed others to play more. His pressing at pace caused problems as did his calmness on the ball along with his physical presence. Laurent, Norburn and another would be a solid midfield.

My first game of the season so was interested in comments made by others who watched the friendlies.
Firstly, the kit looks much smarter in the flesh than the release photos.
We looked like a team that will be difficult to breakdown, and quite frankly Pompey could have played for another hour and not scored. The three amigos at the back plus our new keeper looked superb.
Pompey had the lions share of possession and a ton of corners which produced nothing. I don’t remember our keeper having to make a save.
Young lad from Chelsea has promise but Mr Laurent needs a mention in dispatches as he immediately changed our attacking threat once on the turf.
Finally, we won’t see many better goals than Mr Giles effort today.
Great start to the season

A tough afternoon but fantastic result. Any result with that midfield is a bonus, so bloody happy with such a tense win. the system wasn’t really doing what the system should for most part. j Unless the system was to frustrate them and take your chances? We didn’t have any chances but thankfully Giles pulled a stunner out of the bag. Don’t get me wrong, I think today is an excellent result against a top team but others will see the pressure they put on us, how easy it was to keep our wing backs from coming forward & try to do the same. It’s going to be an interesting opening few weeks tactically... having said that not many will have the quality of today’s opponents and we certainly have some of our own. Two more decent signings, Norburn regaining fitness & a consistent Josh Laurent could send our season a terrific way, but that’s lots of ‘ifs’!

I was concerned after the first half that Pompey would go up the gears and flick us aside, credit to manager and team: through astute substitutions and spot-on attitude throughout, that the opposition were out worked, ran out of ideas, and on this occasion, one moment of magic was sufficient to secure three points. Thought Vincelots work rate was most impressive (for an old ‘un!).
I wonder if Ronan Curtis is still grinning to himself on the long coach journey home?

Impressed with Vincelot today, comfortably his best game in blue and amber.
The 3 centre-backs look imposing and strong.
Ricketts has set his stall out, and with that same level of effort, we could be a team that is hard to beat.
Can we score enough at the other end, possibly need a bit more quality in the final third.
The return of Norburn will be massive, and hopefully we can get in another decent striker.
Promising start, especially against a team that are likely to finish in the top 3.

Take your pick.........Norburn has to be in. I don’t disagree with you. One thing is for sure, if we can go out and do that every week .......LOOK OUT LEAGUE ONE. Now I’m switching off cos the doubters will attack this. Like I said ......mark my words. I'm assuming then you no longer wish Ricketts to 'go and do one' ?

Two more decent signings, Norburn regaining fitness & a consistent Josh Laurent could send our season a terrific way, but that’s lots of ‘ifs’! villa for parts of the game, dundee first half and portsmouth first half all did the same thing , press hard win 50-50 balls , play high up the park and it stops the wing backs , which is what the system is supposed to when under pressuer but then you are left with go through the midfield which Mc Cormick tried to or go long and play a high ball and hope Morrison wins the header which he did. as indivduals i think we have some good midfielders but they need to improve there link up play and work more as a unit, if we are to see more from Ferjiri we need some balls on the ground and both he a nd morrision need to do more training to devlop some understanding of were they need to be to work together. all of which is very achivable on the training ground , we dont have a midfield general if we did we whould have more control of the midfield town need to game manage better and just slow the game down otherwise they are just going to get waves of attacks which is very tiring for the defence. Edwards has done amazingly well to get to his levels of fitness but he does struggle after 75 minutes, which either will improve or not. the keeper did well in trying to release the ball quickly he comes for corners and he has a good punch and back three did very well

Like others, I'm hopeful that SR will be signing a creative midfielder and another forward soon. We had no like for like on the bench to replace Morison. This needs to be addressed. I’m told both of these are happening in the very near future

Yeah, I think we saw an excellent display yesterday defensively (we had the numbers and they worked extremely hard) but I don't think we created a great deal going forward. It was a wonder goal that won it and I doubt none of us are naive enough to think we can pull one of them out of the bag every week. Superb result (and no mistake). Performance wise; some good, some bad. On a side note; was also nice to see one or two of the players making an effort to get everyone involved in the goal celebrations. They wanted everyone to come together. Always a good sign that, suggests a happy camp. That’s hugely important too. I think it was Laurent who was pretty vocal at the end towards his teammates too. I do wonder whether he'll be given the start next time around. Considering he wasn't starting he certainly went about things in the right way when he was brought on. Has given Ricketts a decision to make anyhow. Just a gut feeling looking to his performance from yesterday but I think he might come on big time this season.

I hope and assume that SR set up the team yesterday to counter Portsmouth's threat as an attacking unit.
I hope he doesn't set up like that every week, because otherwise it's going to be a bit dull.

Well that was a very pleasant surprise. Went with very low expectations but was impressed with an awful lot. No way in a million years this team will be anywhere close to the bottom.
First 20 mins we looked like the away team, defended a little shakily at times but generally effectively and despite our lack of possession we restricted Pompey to longer range shots. Despite not really being able to tell the three CB's apart yet all were immense. Giles and Love didn't really offer much width and goal aside were not too effective going forward, but perhaps that was an issue of paying too much respect to what, being fair, was a decent away team. The first 60 mins I thought we were mostly overrun in midfield but Laurent had a fabulous and very immediate impact being much more direct and progressive in his play that the slightly ponderous midfield before that. Edward's covered plenty of ground and I'm excited about seeing him, Laurent and Norburn as a middle three.
Morison looks a real bully, and a ran well. Superb play to rob a defender first half before shooting over and did well to last the whole match. Doubt he'll score many but his height and strength hopefully will be a real asset. Not seen in mentioned but at a late corner there was a very obvious shirt pull on him that probably should have been a penalty too. Fejiri never really got in the game, but we know what he can do, 16 goals in 3/4 of a season last year suggest he's a 20 goal a season guy, with the right service.
A shout out also to O'Leary who did everything he had to do very confidently too, looks a real asset.
400 miles and 7.5 hours of driving but well worth it, ticket sorted for MK next weekend.

I've been quite critical of Rickett's tactics last season but felt he got it spot on yesterday with our set up, which really dulled Portsmouth's attacking options and then the substitutions really worked well from an attacking point of view. Agree though that against other opposition or if we go behind in games the starting line up is maybe a bit too defensive, and our distribution from defence and midfield to the strikers needs a lot of work. But it would seem we have options in the squad now and could quite easily go from 5-3-2 to 4-4-2 if we need to chase a game. Overall I was nicely surprised by yesterdays performance as I had been fearing a bit of a battering, but the ability of the team to work hard and do the basic stuff really well was a nice counter to some of last seasons performances. Some new signings showed great potential too particuarly the younger players who should get better with more match time.

Really enjoyed the game yesterday. This is a new team and they have improved through pre season and all of them worked really hard today. Did we deserve the win - yes we did! We wanted it and fought for it. As others said defence was spot on. Yes we need to improve on the passing and in midfield but we played as a team unlike Pompey who were arguing amongst themselves. Curtis was a disgrace, playing dirty, whinging, him and walkes were arguing, they were just after their own glory. Giles amazing goal and unexpected I was wishing for a draw just before it. At last we have a decent goal keeper in O'Leary, makes a few mistakes but learns from them. Pierre bossed Pompey and my mom. COYB.

I think once Norburn is back and if rumours turn out to be true about a couple of attacking options, then we will hopefully improve in the final third. I agree SR got the tactics spot on yesterday, but I think he tends to be on the cautious side, so just hope we don't spend all season willing to concede possession and territory.

As a result we can get more going on up top. Fingers crossed.

A player who has gone under the radar....Josh Laurent.
If he can produce the same consistent level of performance as yesterday then he could be a real asset this season.
