Not entirely sure we deserved that. But well done Town. A wins a win...👍 Pompey look the part. Yes , they look good side no doubt. A great win for us , did we deserve it ? Maybe not . We look a side who are going to be difficult to score against but may find it difficult to score . Still , we have , on this early showing, far more about us . Could do very well this season .

Very impressed with the centre backs today. Really put in a shift and restricted Portsmouth to pot shots. Everything else needs work. Had a great view of the goal. Great strike, not bad for his efl debut.

Not entirely sure we deserved that. But well done Town. A wins a win...👍 Pompey look the part. town rode there luck today but the defence deserve a lot of praise. indivudually in the midfield we have some good players but they need to be a more choesive unit and hopefully that will come. if it does then the forwards will get more supply Morrison has good awarness but ferjiri need to do more more on anticipating were the flick on's are going to be, this i hope will happen in time. this is the third game i have seen this season and ferjiri gets very little supply on the ground which is a pity as this is playing to his strength , i hope we can mix it up a bit more, otherwise it will be very predicatable and easy to defend against. we have clearly worked on mixing up the free kicks and McCormick delivery was very good from set pices or crosses. first league game first win and Giles already a contender for goal of the season.

O’Leary - 7
Love - 6.5 Williams - 7 Ebanks Landell - 8 Pierre - 8 Giles - 7
Edwards 6.5 Vincelot - 6 McCormick - 7
Okenirhie - 5 Morrison - 7
Thought we looked really good. McCormick was unlucky to come off as he looked very good going forward however defensively he’s too lightweight and Laurent made a huge impact.
Thought the whole back 5 played fantastic - even Love at RWB had a very steady game.
Think we are missing a striker to play off Morrison. Once Norburn is back we’ll look a very good side - well much better than last year!

Don’t think Portsmouth we’re anywhere near as good as some people seem to be making out, they were the better side today but we’ve seen much, much better League One teams down here in the last few seasons, and if you look at the size of the club and the money spent, they should come here and be the better side. I don’t think they had many clear cut chances and as was said on the radio, did O’Leary have a proper save to make?
Defence looks solid, but I think it’s going to be a slog attacking wise this season without SW on the pitch especially, we really struggled to get the ball down and move it, second half was much better and the additions of JL and SW made a big difference.
As for Marquis, that’s a lot of money to spend on a bloke who spends 75% of the game chatting to the ref and 25% of it on the floor.

The three centre halves were all excellent, that's what won us the game. If they all stay fit I think we'll have an excellent season. Hard to tell who is who from a distance.
O'Leary - 7 - No real saves of note, caught everything.
Williams - 9 Ebanks Landell - 8 Pierre - 9 Love - 7 - Solid no frills performance. Giles - 9.5 - Unbelievable player, not sure what he's doing playing in League One.
Vincelot - 8 - His best game in a town shirt. A Grant-esque performance. Edwards - 8 - Looks to be at 100% which is great to see, covered so much ground getting in to the box and tracking back. McCormick - 8 Looks like he's got real quality. Looking forward to seeing more of him.
Morrison - 5 - Won a lot in the air but struggled to link play up. Okenabirhie - 4 - Very quiet. Maybe give Whalley a start next week.
Laurent and Whalley both looked lively when they came on. Eisa unlucky with the injury.
In terms of negatives, we saw very little of the ball. I think that's partly down to the fact we were playing one of the best sides in the division and also partly down to the system we play. The ball out to the full backs was always on for them as we obviously had no wingers. It made it very easy for them to retain possession.
We also need to do much better linking the attack and midfield. Morrison wins everything so we have to get bodies around him. The front two were very isolated and struggled link up play.
Excellent start though, buzzing for Ricketts and the squad.

For me: O’Leary 7 Never flapped, always looked solid. Love 6 Decent first game, a few poor choices. Williams 7 Some excellent tackles and interceptions great pace Embankment Landell 7 Solid game, couple of wayward balls but looked good. Pierre 7 Solid game, some wayward balls but looked good. Giles 7 Big gap in front of him was a problem, but he coped ok and what a goal. McCormick 6 Looked good going forward but defensively a risk (why did he keep passing back?) Edwards 7. good game, looked a bit slow / out of puff at times, but some good touches. Vincelot 7 ran his socks off and put in a number of important tackles and blocks MoM Morrison 7 clever player, some great touches Okenabhirie 5 Poor game - looked off the pace
Laurent 7 Great impact and changed the game Whalley 6 Would have been better if Elisa had stayed on I’m sure Elisa - Poor lad, hope that he is ok

A tough afternoon but fantastic result. Any result with that midfield is a bonus, so bloody happy with such a tense win.
Keeper looks a class act, centre halves good defensively. Wing backs were not wing backs, they were part of a flat 5 for most of that but oh what a goal. Thank god it won the game, immense.
I think Portsmouth are a good side based on that and won’t lose many. Us? I still don’t know. Just like against Dundee there was lots of joy to be had against us & the system wasn’t really doing what the system should for most part. Love starting with a win though.. good for confidence and all that.
Bring on MK.

Thought Romain Vincelot was outstanding today, lost count of the blocks and tackles he made - bit of an unsung hero

We wanted 3 points, battled hard to get them, and probably deserved them taking everything into consideration We deserved much better earlier in the year and lost 2-0 so today kind of makes up for that with interest
Couple of players need improving and probably will be with norburn and a loanee coming in so a perfect start for us so far
Can’t make next week but will have dunny glued to my ear and can’t wait Well done town so far

Cant really understand the positive comments on here about Portsmouth. Our keeper was hardly tested and Maaquiss the two million pound striker was a donkey. Very impressed with our three big central defenders. If we can keep them fit it is all looking good. A bit light up front but Im sure SR will sort that.

the rear guard were excellent .. would imagine there were a couple of last seasons defenders on the bench .. thinking do I call my agent ? as it looks like I will not get a lot of game time this season . the way these guys are playing !!!

Good game we defended like lions and were well organised. Need a creative midfielder, and another striker, and we should have a reasonable season, but overall I was very pleased with today

Always a hostage to fortune making predictions based on the first game of the season, but it doesn't look like we'll concede many.
It also looks like we won't score a lot, but this should improve when Edwards gets fitter and Norburn returns, they will both be a threat from midfield. Add another striker and we could be looking at playoffs.
I'm another who doesn't join in the admiration for Portsmouth, very little goal threat despite their big spending.
Vincent my MoM, possibly because I had such low expectations of him coming into the game.

fey was very quiet today, anything in the air or hold up play then he is not gonna do it, he needs to run on to clever balls, morris was a bit careless with the ball at times but can win knock down headers all day long, giles can only get better.edwards was good today but we missed a bit of creativity early on, so josh and sean gave us that spark to go forward, but 3 points against pompey with a relative new team was fantastic, and we can hopefully get better,

In my opinion the introduction of Laurent improved things immeasurably in midfield.
Whalley for the ineffective Fejiri was a good move too.
Like others, I'm hopeful that SR will be signing a creative midfielder and another forward soon.
We had no like for like on the bench to replace Morison. This needs to be addressed.

fey is a funny one, ok his goal record appears ok but in reallity he does little for the team, imho.he deffo not someone who can get the ball and win it in the air or bulldoze defences,we sure need another option,

Very encouraging start. As SR said in his post match talk ‘still lots to do’.
Think zenfootball2 got it spot re Fejiri - ‘ferjiri gets very little supply on the ground which is a pity as this is playing to his strength’.
Too many balls in the air to the strikers, keep it on he deck!

Portsmouth have got a championship side. Any side in league 1 will struggle against them. We proved we have a defence to repel any league one attack force. Where the midfield are concerned, Rickets wants 150 per cent and the midfield he put out today undoubtedly gave that. The one attribute that any side needs is off the wall creativity..........that was on the bench. Whaley and Laurent came on and changed the game......simply because they are both a class act. Somehow Rickets has got to get at least Whalley on the pitch from the start. When Norburn comes back Edwards will be on the bench. All the above says it all, we have an incredible squad, very underrated because no one knows what they are capable of. Mark my words, 3 or 4 games down the line we will be a force to be reckened with.

Take your pick.........Norburn has to be in. I don’t disagree with you. One thing is for sure, if we can go out and do that every week .......LOOK OUT LEAGUE ONE.
Now I’m switching off cos the doubters will attack this.
Like I said ......mark my words.

Great result, with our back three outstanding. Dave Edwards came in and worked hard, as usual, but when he had the ball there was never a lot on, especially in the first half. With the introduction of Laurent ( especially) and Whalley we were able to take the game to them. We were restricted to long punts upfield most of the game, and if Morrison did win them, Fejiri did not read the situation or was too far back. Sorry, but in my view we need a decent striker up alongside Morrison because Fejiri is just not up to it.
Portsmouth can look at the stats and say they battered us, but their game plan was to hoof balls into our box or win corners. They did not change tactics all match, no quick short balls into feet or into space in the box, just hoof, hoof hoof into our box. No better than us really, but they did it more frequently than us.
With Norburn back, Laurent, Whalley we can make a mark this year. No daft predictions, but we will be more than ok.

Vincelot & Morison, players who hadnt really been given much good press pre-season for various reasons, will both do well for us.
A positive start. Well done Salop!
