Get this in early doors... So first day of the season and a really difficult game against a side tipped for promotion (and no doubt backed by a decent following). We're really up against it to start things off. Safe trip to all those making their way to the game today. Lets hope we're off to a decent start!! If anyone could send any pictures of the South Stand with whatever new flags and stuff they have then that would be appreciated. And good luck to those who are putting that together today (suspect they'll be as nervous about that as much as the game)... God bless iFollow; I'll be following from afar. Come on Town!!!!

Getting excited which is a bit of a surprise after last seasons debarcle but from what I’ve seen so far feel we could be a bit of a surprise package....
Seemed to go very quiet on the flag front, no mention lately and no sign in pre season perhaps being held back for the first game?
Just hope they’re spread along safe standing rather than just concentrated in block 9 👍

Make the most of it, not long now... I do feel a little more confident about things this season and I suspect that's because we've not had the disruptive preseason that we had last time around. I mean Askey wasn't up to the job anyhow, we found that out pretty soon...but even before that become apparent, it was a bit of a mess before a ball had been kicked with the comings and goings we had to deal with. A little more uneventful this time around.

Portsmouth have had a number of injuries i think they may play 4.4.2 and then it will be wing backs against wingers.kenny Jackett is an experince and astute tactical manager and i am sure he will have a plan to nullify town. we are playing a team who will probably be up there in the promotion race so i think this will be a tough game and a usefull bench mark for town ,Bryn Morris is injured but Bolton will have a point to prove.
we seem to have good keeper on loan, whilst town seem to be keeping there shape and the defence are more vocal , they have been caught out with diaganole passesss and not picking up players who drop back to the far corner for corners/ crosses, there were rumours that Pierre was injured i hope not as he has a physical prsence and he goes forward to suport the midfield with the odd run. we have to cut down the amount of free kicks we give in dangerous areas.
if teams cancel out our wing backs, as we saw it for periods against Villa and the first half against Dundee , then we have two options route one or play it through the midfield, whilst indivudually i think we have some reasonable midfield players , they dont seem to be playing as a unit( this takes time) and we dont have a midfield general. it will be intresting to see how that works out. .Okenabirhie scored twice in his last game,it will be intresting to see how his relationship with morrison develops

I think Pompey prefer to play 4-2-3-1

I think Pompey prefer to play 4-2-3-1 they 4.4.2 was used in some of there pre season games and was mentioned in article after there last games as a possible formation for today , or they could be just playing with ricketts head and using misinformation

As you say maybe they are going to change this season. Marcus Harness, who plays wide right, is one of their big new signings of the summer so maybe it is to accommodate him.

Whalley needs to be on that pitch.
How you get him on there? I don’t know but he’s the one who will make things happen.

Defence looks solid but we need more possession.
Passing has been shocking and we need to get the midfield to get us playing. McCormick is the only one trying to do that at the moment.
Portsmouth are very good though but we need to improve in the second half.

Well. Not the most auspicious of starts. Early days yet, mind. And Pompey do look a decent outfit. But I suppose a start that we all could have predicted? Difficult to score against because we have the bodies back there, we're hard to get through. But not a great deal of football from Town and not too much of that in the Pompey half. One or two moments where we moved the ball well but that's about it. Just don't look a unit at all going forward. Lets hope there is better to come as things bed in...👍

Find it baffling that players can be yellowed for getting kicked on the follow through of some other player kicking the ball. You can surely block, you're not obliged to simply let him kick it.

The defence was very good today. Nothing looked like it would get past the back 3, they all look like fantastic CB’s.
Midfield wasn’t great, we missed Norburn and Laurent starting. Morison is a nuisance and will cause a lot of problems for defences this season. McCormick has talent and will get better as the season goes on.
I’ll take the 3 points against the best team in the division.
Hopefully that should give the lads a massive confidence boost.
Ratings;
O Leary 7 - a couple of good saves and looks a safe pair of hands.
Love 6 - not adventurous but solid Ebanks-Landell 8- amazing goal line clearance and a very good performance Williams 8 - as always, brilliant. Pierre 9 - MOTM - read the game well and didn’t let anything get past him. Giles 7 - grew into the game after a nervous start. good going forward and what a strike too.
Edwards 6 - worked hard but not quite there yet. Rarely had the ball. Vincelot 6- did a decent job. McCormick 6 - touches of class but gave the ball away too much.
Morison 6- a nuisance for defenders, could be a big asset for us this season. Okenabirhie 5 - quiet, didn’t do too much and was rightly subbed.
Laurent - 7 - was lively, had a positive impact Whalley - 6 - did well too, made us more of a threat Eisa - N/A

The defence was very good today. It was. Some of the distribution from the back wasn't the best and it times it did seem 'safety first' when it looked possible they could have looked to have taken it and played a pass but defensively, they worked hard and made it very difficult for a useful Portsmouth. Rode our luck at times but that's part and parcel. I guess when its five at the back the concern is how that impacts your forward options. For me we saw that today. But then a solid back line always gives you a platform and a chance. We also saw that today.

With Norburn to return and hopefully a few more quality additions before the window closes this has the making of a decent squad.

Pierre was awesome my MOTM. Defence was solid and no nonsense clearances. If I was being ultra critical Ebanks-Landell did give away a couple of fouls away which he should’ve done better on but more than made up for it with the goal line clearance of course.
Love and Giles - Happy with their performances defensively but did not go forward enough overall in my opinion especially considering the formation.
No one stood out in the midfield until Laurent came on. Edwards was disappointing, Vincelot was ok and helped out with a couple of headers out the box towards the end, McCormick thought he final ball was just lacking unfortunately and I’d say the same about Morison, we were on the break twice but Morison failed to find Okenabirhie but was causing problems for defenders in the air.
Whalley on the bench just seems such a waste. Hope Eisa is ok as it seemed he never came on.
We got away with one today I thought especially with that cross that went straight across the goalmouth, Pompey were the better team second half until we scored then for last 15 mins. We only had one shot in target and it was an absolute screamer. I’d say I’m confident of a win against MK Dons.

clearly town had not read the script so a pleasent suprise with a wonder strike from out of nothing.
Porstmouth started brightly winning most of the 50-50 balls as town struggled to get out of there half for most of the first half, towns defence did really well, whilst McCormick looked to try and move town forward giles looked over run as there player had acres of space on the wings and linked up with there 11.not sure who's responsibility it was to come from midfield and help out.the portsmouth team tried to win the header from corners as there forwards were lined upa few yards from the box or on the edge of the box somone should have worked how to deal with it
Vincelot broke up a lot of play and did very well, town created very little in the last third, both forwards had very little supply but morrison was winning some headers and trying to get the flick ons.
when put under sustained pressure we need somone to slow the game down.
town looked better in the second half and won more of the 50 - 50 balls, the distributuion improved but was inconsistent. cant remember when morrison volleyd over the bar. the keeper looked tidy won a few vital punches, after the wonder goal town did creat more chances, clearly they have worked on creating some variety with the free kicks. when portsmouth numbwer 11 whent down in the penalty box as he has already been booked if it was not a penalty then it is simulation and he should have gone of. the player on loan from Rangers made a number of hard chalenges so no suprise he picked up two yellows. the ref was slow picking up that Eisa had a head injury, the doctor came on the pitch and he when off looking a bit wobbly and down the tunnel so i hope he is ok.
Morrison is the target man i dont remember ferjiri getting any passes on the ground. a goal mouth clearence presrverd towns lead. town worked hard, they kept there shape early days but a winning start is a bonus.
