I see that Bradford are including 'heritage numbers' on their shirts this season and are said to be the first Football League club to do this. These numbers represent the order in which players appeared in competitive fixtures for the club, the first obviously being No.1, and the latest 1,278. The numbers are embroidered under the club badge.
I think this is a good idea that will catch on. Of course it will need someone to do the research, although I'm sure Mike Jones already has the records available.
It would also require agreement on the qualifying criteria. Are loan players included? When does our competitive history start? I don't think we played competitive league football until 1890 and that was only Shropshire League. However we played in Cup competitions from 1896.
Lots to consider if anyone wants a break from Brexit/Boris!

Am I correct or do cricket players do this on their caps?

Am I correct or do cricket players do this on their caps? Incorrect I’m afraid (although that wasn’t one of the options). The relevant national cricket authority arranges it on their behalf.

Stockport County Supporters Co-op have been doing this for a while with SCAN. gogogocounty.org/scan/scanindex.htmlI remember Brian Caldwell mentioning setting up an ex-players association, maybe it could be tied in with that to have functions and events for supporters, where notable ex players can share memories and stories, with a presentation of their individual “appearance number” on a certificate or trophy or suchlike?

I like the idea but 130years on seems a bit late to start something like this, imagine how silly it will look to several billion years ;-)
