Confirmed. One year deal.
Edit: Ben Garratt, ex-Crewe, is training with us as well, as seen in video of Murphy.

Would we be happy with him as our no.1 next season I'm not sure? Glad we've finally signed a goalkeeper though.

Age is not that important for a keeper as it is for an outfield player and anyone who makes the League 2 team of the year should be able to step up into League 1. Welcome Joe!

I wouldn't have any problem with Murphy being first choice next season, he played 52 games for Bury last season and made the League 2 team of the year. He has loads of experience in League 1 and The Championship. I'd imagine the next goalkeeper we sign (other than Charles-Cook) will be of a standard to either be the number one choice or to push Murphy hard for his place.

He was Crewe's Player of the Year in both 2014/15 and 2015/16 and was at that time attracting interest from the Premier League. Seems perhaps to have lost his way a little since then but clearly has potential. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Garratt

I like the fact we have a very experienced keeper. If we can complement Joe with either a good young keeper on a permanent deal or a young Premier league keeper on loan then I think we have the perfect combination. I'm not really bothered about a third keeper as Ricketts seems to want - I'd rather spend the budget elsewhere and dip into the emergency loan market for a keeper if injuries happen or recall Cam Gregory from wherever he ends up. For a club like ours I don't really see the benefit of a third choice keeper that we are, in all likelihood, paying to sit in the stands.

We have quite an inexperienced defence and the players are still quite new to each other, so good experience behind them is no bad thing.

Another ex Coventry team mate. This is a decent signing. Things are starting to come together quite nicely.

Fair play, I thought Ricketts had been at Coventry a little longer than 12 months!
I did hear former Coventry team mate Lee Burge (keeper) had a trial here a few days back but he signed for Sunderland yesterday. If so that's a bullet dodged.

We should do what Artell did with Garratt at Crewe, and withdraw the offer to Charles Cook because he's taken way too long to make his mind up. Not many on here can understand why SR is offering a contract to him anyway, so to withdraw the offer would be a bullet dodged.

Of course he'll look for better and good luck to him if he finds it. If he doesn't, he can stay here on the terms offered. Why do we need to force the issue and have to look for an alternative 3rd choice keeper? We have much bigger priorities.

Happy with this signing.
Experienced, best GK in League Two last year. Only thing holding him back is his age but I don’t think that matters too much with this one.
Can’t really complain about any Ricketts’s signings yet. Still need a to strengthen a few positions but a promising start.

After all these years you'd think we'd have learnt by now. Must be daft. Me too, and then I look around at some of the signings Oxford, Pompey, Blackpool, Lincoln etc are making and realise their fans are thinking exactly the same. What seems to be some good talent going into clubs of similar stature to ourselves. And then I remember that half the league ends up being similarly s**te each year. Momentum is key.

Obviously a good keeper but when you look at the reviews from Bury you can tell that some here will come to severely dislike him. Apparently lacks confidence in the air, doesn't come for crosses and often punches over catching... But is good at 1 on 1s, like Steve was, with good short passing.

There is also an EFL emergency loan rule for goalkeepers that could be used. I'm fairly sure the availability of Cameron Gregory wouldn't prevent us from doing so under EFL rules were both senior goalkeepers to be injured.

I don't think it's realistic for a League one club to sign goalkeepers who don't have flaws in their game. Our goalkeepers were analysed to death and their flaws scrutinised in minute detail by some on here last season. It would be good if people could cut our goalkeepers a bit of slack this season.

The best goalkeeper in League 2 should be able to hold his own in a league higher and deserves the chance to do so. One year deal is good all round. Very happy with all the new signings to date. A good mix of youth and experience.

Gregory or the loan system is more than adequate.
