Second English goal in the past week ruled out and that's not even as controversial as the Switzerland-Portugal game the other night. What are people's thoughts so far?

I have no issue with VAR for blatant errors but we will get to a situation that every goal gets referred. For me it takes all the drama out of the game and will ruin it as a spectator sport

There is no singular greater moment as a football fan than the unadulterated joy of a goal. And VAR takes that moment away.

Don't like it all, I would rather stick with the idea that decisions even themselves out over a season.
Will we be going to VAR if a players toe is offside? Ridiculous if so.

You still have that moment, as the ball hit's the net, it just might be for nothing. That happens now if the ref rules a goal out for a push / offside or something.

Yeah, and when that happens the sinking feeling is horrible, but it is only a handful of times a season at most. Now imagine it's happening every game. Eventually people will just stop celebrating because everything will inevitably get dragged back to check for a foul in the build up, and with that the spontaneity and passion is gone from the game. It's happened to rugby and it will happen to football.

That's just not how it works. I do concede it would be annoying to have things ruled out more often.

I find a lot of it frustrating but the not flagging for clear offsides I find completely bizarre. Everybody in the ground can see it’s offside and yet they are told to play on just in case it isn’t because they can always go back to the cameras. It’s s step on from not flagging unless they touch it which I have struggled to get my head around since it was introduced.
Is there any scope for it to be used as low as league 1? I really can’t see it happening and that wouldn’t disappoint me too much.

It's happened to rugby and it will happen to football. I agree with the sentiment but disagree with your rugby analogy. Can’t speak for rugby union but rugby league always left it to the referee to decide whether a try should be awarded or a referral made to the video ref. There was no automatic referral or checking. When it was found that refs were being too cautious and referring too many decisions upstairs, the rules were changed. Now, the ref has to award or disallow a try or, if he’s not certain, he can still refer it to the video ref but he must first indicate whether he thinks it’s a try or not. Crucially, the video ref can then only overrule the ref’s indicated decision if there’s incontrovertible evidence that the ref was wrong. Football should follow suit - no automatic video ref, the ref decides whether video gets involved. If he does, he has to make a preliminary decision and the video ref can only overturn that by proving the ref got it wrong. Not perfect but that’s how to make the best use of video, not the way football is doing it.

one change they should make immediately is handball reviews
they should only ever review them at full speed
slow motion gives a totally false reading the slight brushing of the arm looks like they are controlling it for ages with their arm
its a bit like criticising a keeper for a soft goal the replay of the Portugal goal tonight in slow motion made the dutch keeper look awful but full speed he did amazing to even get a hand on it

VAR should only be used if there is a line involved even if it is an imaginary one (off side for example) Anything that will always be a "matter of opinion " should be up to the discretion of the referee

If it involves lifting player off his feet they will watch which part of body makes contact with ground in slow motion. So I could see slow motion being used to see if it hit the players hand but run it at full speed to make decision Better still scrap VAR altogether

One thing that they need to get a grip of immediately, otherwise it is in danger of getting even more out of control, is players running after and hounding the referee for every decision. It’s already farcical, and VAR is gonna make it 10x worse.
They need to implement the same policy as rugby, where only the captain can approach the ref (I know it is supposed to already be the case!) However, I don’t hold out too much hope with the lily-livered manner of officiating in football.

There is no singular greater moment as a football fan than the unadulterated joy of a goal. And VAR takes that moment away. What about in cricket when you think you’ve gotten a wicket, how about scoring a try? If the correct decision is made by the letter of the law, aka not bias that most opinions stem from or lack of knowledge then the game is better for it. Ridiculous that football puts itself above all of the other sports - that’s the reason it’s so laughable in the eyes of those who love other sports. I love football but sometimes some of the fans and pundits make it laughable.

How many s**t games have I watched where the only thing to get me on my feet has been a crap refereeing decision. Football needs the human element.

"One thing that they need to get a grip of immediately, otherwise it is in danger of getting even more out of control, is players running after and hounding the referee for every decision." the comentators in the England Scotland game made the same point and highlighted how both teams were making numerous appeals in the box in the hope of getting a decision. the other issue is about what are defenders expected to do with there arms, how practical as a defender is trying to close down attackers with your arms behind you ? you need you arms for balance , which is different to delbratley putting you are arm up to block the ball. so VAR solves some issues and creates others.

Get rid and stop messing about with the game. Controversy is what the game has always been about. Its what makes a good argument in the pub. Referees sometimes get it wrong. Sometimes it works in your teams favour, sometimes not. We argue and moan after a game and then move onto the next one. That's football. We don't need people interfering and trying to eliminate mistakes. A few years ago Gareth Ainsworth of Wycombe scored a goal against town without the ball crossing the line. VAR would have disallowed it and spoiled the anger and frustration I have felt ever since. We need those feelings and memories or else whats the use.

1 challenge per team per match. Agreed. Think this is the way to go. The goal line tech on the refs watch is a revelation and should be rolled out to lower leagues. For penalties and dubious goals the team should have one challenge per half (with a decision timer akin to cricket). This encourages referees and linesmen to make the correct decision and not rely on the tech to bail them out every time, but gives a team on the receiving end of a possibly unjust decision the opportunity to review. In offsides the linesman should be encouraged to give benefit of doubt to the attacker in very tight decisions. I'd add that the system should only be used with a video and mic link up to the VAR official in the stadium also. The perverse nature of being in a ground and some guy hundreds of miles away watching a screen making a call without you seeing on the big screen is a joke.
