Shame and he so loved it here!!
Ought to add good luck to him. It hasn’t done McGilvray any harm going there.

I remember saying some time back that Bolton would do well for us and eventually make us some money . Unfortunately I was only half right . I’m annoyed we have let this happen. Perhaps we have enough players who can cover for the loss of James and obviously don’t want the money ! In my humble opinion we have somehow ****ed up here . With what’s happened down at MWM lately I fear the worst for next season . Come on SR , prove me wrong .

He’d be stupid not to take an opportunity like that. And I bet the money ain’t bad too .. they’d be willing to nearly double what we could offer you’d imagine

Absolutely . But surely a bit of forward planning on our part would have prevented him going anywhere on a free and we would still have a very decent player on our books .

A solid defender, probably best utilised at centre back rather than full back. However if Ricketts is going to continue to use wing backs in this system then we need much better going forward! Boltons crossing ability really left a lot to be desired. In the system we intend to play our wing backs need to be two of our most creative players on the pitch. Hopefully anyone who comes in has a much better delivery plus obviously being a tidy defender.

He's a good player but not really suited to the right wing back role.
That leaves us with no right backs (with Sears long termed injured) and two, maybe three, goalkeepers needed. Lots of work to do this summer!

Lots of work to do this summer! James Bolton has never let us down . He always plays at a decent level for us and he is going to a club who have every chance of reaching the play offs and possibly promotion . Yet ,we can afford to let him go whilst we f..k around in search of , shall we say a far better player(s) who can cross a ball and play the wing back role . With the money we pay for players it isn’t going to happen is it . Clubs with more money or a couldn’t care less attitude to financial fair play rules will have snapped them up. I must say even Whalley isn’t brilliant at putting balls into the danger areas. The way it’s going we will be putting out a “Dads Army “ of a team past their best with no resale value.

His stalling clearly indicated he wasn't going to sign for us.

I expect it will be for far better money than we could pay, so good luck to him. If it means we can give an udder young player a chance, then so be it, I wouldn't lose any sleep over that.

I would like to see young Barnett given a chance at wing back, seemed to play well in that position at Telford.

A decent full back. A not so decent wing back!!
Can’t believe we got money for Arnold and zilch for Bolton!! (I know it’s due to contract etc.!!)

His stalling clearly indicated he wasn't going to sign for us. There is that yes, however it was also our own stalling in not offering him a contract before the season ended that started it, as before then he'd said he'd like to stay if offered something

Poor from the club letting it get to this.
He wouldn't have commanded a huge fee, yet you feel it's £250k+ missed. Plus we paid a fee of at least £70k to get him in the first place.

I don't understand why we couldn't have put a contract offer on the table months ago?

Do you have a source for the £70K? I am surprised that Pompey have gone for Bolton. I am happy to be proved wrong (not many people rated Craig Mcgillivray and he had a good season at Fratton Park) because he comes over as a genuine bloke, but I think he has reached his peak and doesn't appear to have what it takes to move up a level. Pompey are bound for the Championship and James could well end up as nothing more than a squad player.

Pompey are bound for the Championship and James could well end up as nothing more than a squad player. Similar feelings, in that although he could continue to improve with us, instead he's done well with us stepping up from non league and rewarded his time with us with a better deal at a club likely to push for promotion. He's got a reward from it. We may miss out on a fee, but have highlighted a natural route for non league players to use us a stepping stone route to a more lucrative contract. Plus, with the defensive signings already made and the likely use of wing backs we could use Bolton's salary to a more suited wing back player who could be better than Bolton as wing back. i would also add, though we need to avoid Fey going the same way as he's likely to earn us more money. Just a thought in contracts would we rather see 2 year deals with option of a extra year as standard for players age 28/29 or younger?

Hey well, this kind of move happens often in today’s game and impacts all Football League clubs now that players command so much of the power.
Nobody’s fault, just one of those things, Bolton was a good player for us but by no means irreplaceable.

Just hope that Bolton's appearances at Fratton Park for us don't enter the same league of mythology as MacGillivray's error-strewn one.

Don't blame him. Another **** up by the club not getting him signed on a decent contract. Now he leaves for free!! Stupid. It's quite a simple process for players and their agents: 1. Player gets interest or is touted to other clubs. 2. Present club get to hear about it and offer contract. 3. Agent tries to get increased terms. 4. Player will not sign contract as he will then command a transfer fee that will put clubs off. 5. Club with the offer of the most wages wins. During this the player says he loves the club and wants to stay, I wonder why. Pompey have more money than us, simple.

The usual blame game on here - why didn’t we offer him a contract earlier? As if he would rush to sign it - or as if his agent would let him.
Let him go. He’s an ok right back but gets done by pace and trickery against a good winger and makes plenty of mistakes. He’s not an effective wing back. Good luck to him but maybe we can find better. Not concerned by this at all.
