Good point. Much more excitement and drama than the top domestic leagues. The inevitable and logical next step is ..... Not sure about that, I'd say the European Cup being just that contributes a great deal to the excitement. That it is a knock out, winner takes all competition (in the final stages anyhow) adds an awful lot to the games listed. Doubt you would have seen the same amount of drama and excitement if it was 12th placed Ajax against 5th placed Madrid with the games months apart. Or 10th placed Manchester against bottom of the division Paris. And so on. Not sure it's inevitable. These clubs want to be winning titles, that only one would be able to do so if a European league came about...not sure that would appeal to either club or fans. Think both would rather be winning domestic titles than a mid table finish year after year. I’m sure clubs enjoy winning titles but the excitement of hoovering up the same title year after year with no real challengers must pale. Besides which, that overlooks the money - sponsors and broadcasters won’t find predictable domestic leagues very attractive. A European league could have more appeal, especially with the ability to sell it to a worldwide audience and, no doubt, take live matches to the Asian and American continents, perhaps to Africa in time. Who knows? Maybe they’d give it a conference structure, like US sports - which is closer to the current format than a simple league. Money will dictate the future of top level football and that’s why it won’t surprise me if it happens.

Well.. I'd written off the Scousers after the first leg. That is undoubtedly their best 'famous European night at Anfield' the commentators have been banging on about since the mid-70's. Incredible. Amazing game! Against the odds a little of a week ago. No one considered it. It's a chilling prospect for a lot of people.. Liverpool could win the European CL again. How many times?? That's going to be intolerable. It's going to be even worse if City fluff The Premiership. And it's going to affect your life. Your place at work. Down the pub. In the supermarket. Hysteria reached to a level never seen before. C'mon City! (clenched fists) Come on Manchester City! C'mon!!!! Are you the self appointed leader of the MCFC Supporters Club (Goat Branch)?

Only one word. Respect ✊ I asked before, if an English team wins the Champions League and Europa League do we get another 4 places if that teams in the top four? Chance for Manure or not? it won't happen again did once quote wiki in the 2004–05 FA Premier League. Liverpool had finished fifth in the table. The public reaction to this decision prompted UEFA to make a one-off exception for Liverpool to enter the tournament Didn’t they have to play a pre qualifier against TNS?

Well you certainly can't argue that this year's CL has been dull... Not just tonight: Ajax in Madrid Liverpool in Munich Utd in Paris City v Spurs Some amazing games. Add Spurs in Amsterdam to that list. Unbelievable.

Who knows what will happen but I don't think its as inevitable as some believe. The worldwide fan base of these clubs didn't sign up to support them to see them finishing mid-table season after season. That'll soon wear thin and who knows what impact that will have on a clubs worldwide appeal. Still, I guess only time will tell...

How many global viewers will watch PSG against anonymous French league fodder? Or Bayern/Juve against whoever? People watch the big games, not the humdrum. I’m not particularly advocating it but I think it’s going that way and these astonishing CL games can only encourage those pushing for it. It wasn’t the scarcity of the fixtures that made these games incredible, it was the intensity of the competition. American sports teams have no problem attracting money or support. There’s also only one outright winner (like the top football leagues) but the rest somehow cope with failure. Let’s see how it looks in 5, 10 years.

But how long will it be before Bayern or Juve or Barca or whoever you think will make up the league will be considered anonymous league fodder. It might be competitive at first but very likely after a few years some clubs will pull away from the rest. Think Premier League back 25 years

There’s also only one outright winner (like the top football leagues) but the rest somehow cope with failure. Let’s see how it looks in 5, 10 years. How many will watch PSG against AC Milan sat in some European League with absolutely nothing riding on it with both sat mid-table never troubling those at the top and with no concerns about relegation? Or Juve against Bayern if its for nothing more than a 6th place finish? That's exactly the point for me, I think if you turn this into a league setup the more humdrum, meaningless games you introduce. You lose a lot of the drama and excitement you get from a cup format. I actually think what we have seen this season advocates the current setup. But then I'm not making the decisions, if the clubs get their heads turned, when the sponsors come in with the $$$$$$$...but I do think it would be a mistake... See your point about the US sports but their seasons are a lot shorter and for the vast majority of clubs shorter still (if they don't make their play offs). It is pretty much a setup like the Champions League with groups and then knock out stages. Whether a shortened season would appeal to the clubs and supporters I'm not so sure (but the US model works that way, whether it could be expanded and keep it competitive I'm not sure). And whether European clubs would also be open to making the competition more even as they do in the US too, so at least giving clubs a decent chance to compete against each other... Otherwise, as Grizzly mentions above, soon wouldn't take long to some to break off away from the rest and we'd be where we are now with the major leagues across Europe, with one or two forging ahead and leaving the majority behind to be nothing more than to make up the numbers...which I'm sure their supporters would soon get bored of pretty quickly. I think many neutrals would too. And i bet to compensate for that the cheeky gets would want to field a second side in the domestic league too. And I bet our daft FA would let them
