Actually, probably not that mysterious Does anyone know anything about this bridge which seems to link the big island downstream from the weir to a house on Underdale Road. Is the bridge (and island) privately owned or by the council? I don't think it's visible from the town/Castlefields side of the river, or from the Underdale Road side.

Privately owned by a family who have a house on Underdale Road. I believe they are a prominent family in the town but not sure to what their status is.

That opens up the mystery a bit. Another pic of the bridge from the site below. It seems that the island is used for some local kids summer club run by a lady with the surname Powell. Never thought there was a building on the island though? www.dawnpowell.co.uk/photographs-dawn-s-den

Looks like Powell Island is Shrewsbury's new 'in-place'!
Obviously, the mystery is solved. It's owned by some chap called Mr Powell, who probably isn't short of a bob or two.

I think that house has part of the remnants of the Abbey rebuilt in its garden. Correct me if I'm wrong - They were the bits knocked down when Thomas Telford built the a5 through the wing that is now Abbey forgate.

That was the house I referred to when I was talking music with the Shropshire Tenor earlier. We looked at it 20 years ago and it didn’t seem quite so heavily wooded then. The house owner has naming rights over the island, so it does change from time to time, and it’s reached by a private footbridge from the garden. We were told it used to be grazed in summer, with cattle being brought across the shallow river. Fantastic, but had a small kitchen though.

Interesting thread. Anyone had a gander of this place? Should be quite easy to pitch up on the island and enjoy a few bevvies as long as you don't cause a mess. Got me intrigued to explore.

I've been there and it's lovely - would have loved to own an island! But I wouldn't suggest pitching up on it. It's effectively an extended part of the garden. <iframe width="18.72" height="3.28" id="MoatPxIOPT0_90203006" scrolling="no" style="border-style: none; left: 15px; top: -5px; width: 18.72px; height: 3.28px; position: absolute; z-index: -9999;"></iframe> <iframe width="18.72" height="3.28" id="MoatPxIOPT0_80317499" scrolling="no" style="border-style: none; left: 881px; top: -5px; width: 18.72px; height: 3.28px; position: absolute; z-index: -9999;"></iframe> <iframe width="18.72" height="3.28" id="MoatPxIOPT0_50500953" scrolling="no" style="border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 105px; width: 18.72px; height: 3.28px; position: absolute; z-index: -9999;"></iframe> <iframe width="18.72" height="3.28" id="MoatPxIOPT0_50953197" scrolling="no" style="border-style: none; left: 881px; top: 105px; width: 18.72px; height: 3.28px; position: absolute; z-index: -9999;"></iframe>
