RIP Is my memory correct that he lived in Shawbury or Market Drayton and the crash happened in Baldwin’s Gate or am I mixing it up with Sammy Irvins crash? As I recall the Banks accident was on the road that goes over the M6 just south of junction 15. To the west of of the motorway driving east towards Stoke. I recall my dad pointing the gap in the hedge every time we went past it. He was obsessed.

"Having journeyed into the Victoria Ground for treatment on a minor injury, he was on his way home for Sunday lunch in Madeley Heath when he overtook an idling car in his Ford Consul. He was on the wrong side of the road, therefore, when an approaching car suddenly appeared in front of him"

Gordon Banks was simply the very best English goalkeeper I have ever seen and one of the best ever in the world.
Superb in every respect, especially positioning, he would have been a great in any era.
As a kid who always played in goal and who was just old enough at 7 to take in the 1966 World Cup his exploits in the 1966 and 1970 World Cups were particularly inspirational.
One of my biggest thrills was acting as a ball boy for an England training camp at Roehampton just before the 1970 World Cup and getting the whole squad's autographs including Sir Alf. At the end of the day, the ball boys were allowed to take penalties against Gordon Banks until we scored, which was a thrill.
By all accounts a really nice man off the pitch
RIP Gordon and thanks for some really great memories and for being a key part of England's only World Cup win

That save, I remember as he was recovering to get up, Terry Cooper I think the one who patted him on the head, rare thing back then lol. Then that penalty against Hurst for that semi at West Ham. Memories , and who would have thought the heartbreak of 70...urrghh hated Muller, West Germany broke my heart.Tears in front of mum and Dad .. Another 12 bloody years before the next one, and watching the Jocks failing lol.

I saw an interview where he talked about the Man City Keeper Trautman showing him how to use chewing gum to make his hands sticky pre gloves era. when I started playing at school i had no gloves, I remember the first pair of gloves I wore were 'ray clemence' and I borrowed them of a team made who didn't even play in goal, he was one of those kids that had everything , they were basically just red fake leather gloves , the first pair I ever had were like the common gardening glove but had some sort of plastic strips on them with pimples , when gloves got better they also got quite expensive, I've paid over £50 before now and for something that deteriorates pretty quickly, I'm sure you can pay over £200 too, best ones I ever had were called fingersave , strong plastic strips prevented your finders bending back, wish I'd had them from the start as I've probably broke, dislocated or done the ligaments to every digit more than once something not mentioned which im sure I heard banks say one, these nice new green tops were also a hinderance to keepers when they first arrived as they were shiny and he said gathering the ball into your chest sometimes meant it would slip out
