A legend has left us today.
I’ll never forget seeing ‘that’ save for the first time.

When I was a kid it didn't matter who you supported, you loved Gordon Banks and knew he was the best.
Quite a few of them have gone now but the 1966 team are immortals to every England supporter.

I remember that when he was first selected for England there was a deal of controversy that he was not the best available. How wrong that proved to be. RIP

RIP Who remembers Stoke City coming to the Gay Meadow for a friendly? (Would it be 1968 or 1970?) Gordon Banks was the big attraction that day but he did not play! I was amongst a massive crush of young autograph hunters at the end of the match at the main entrance. Too many of us to get an autograph safely. We were told to write to him c/o Stoke and he would send an autograph - and he did. That's the game I remember GB not playing.

RIP Gordon. A true gentleman, a fierce competitor on the pitch and one of the finest most humble people off it. Thoughts go to his family at this very sad time.
England's greatest 'keeper bar none....

Banks, Wilson, Moore and Ball have all now gone. Armfield, Connelly, Springett and Byrne who were all members of the 1966 England World Cup Squad have also left us.
Stiles and Peters are suffering from Alzheimers, Jack Charlton from memory loss.
So sad how time moves on. R.I.P. Gordon. One of the all time greats.

The World at One played David Coleman's legendary and spine-tingling commentary: "Pele....what a save! Gordon Banks picked that out of the net." It was followed by a nice interview with Alan Mullery who said he copped a torrent of abuse by asking Banks afterwards: "Why didn't you catch it?"

Seem to remember meeting him (so modest) - whether we got the autograph that day, I can’t remember - but we do have it! RIP

Whilst remembered for his World Cup save against Pele, Banks rated this as his best save: against Geoff Hurst:

Gordon Banks was also manager of Telford United between 1979 and 1981 and they will mark his passing at their game tonight.

The many fine tributes on twitter today from clubs and, past and present, players in Britain and around the world speak volumes about the extremely high regard in which Gordon Banks continued to be held throughout his life.
A couple of examples from modern day goalkeeping greats.

The save against Hurst is the one that caused my dad to smash the arm of his armchair when celebrating when watching the highlights. The atmosphere was a bit frosty at breakfast the following morning. I think West Ham and Stoke played each other four times in that semi-final.

The 1970s squad is looking depleted too. I believe that only Terry Cooper remains of the back five (including Banks) that played against Brazil. Banks, Moore, Labone and Newton all gone.
Or did Tommy Wright play against Brazil? I seem to remember that Newton was a first choice full back.

RIP
Is my memory correct that he lived in Shawbury or Market Drayton and the crash happened in Baldwin’s Gate or am I mixing it up with Sammy Irvins crash?
