Good knock from Bairstow today in challenging conditions.

The ball that got Root out was nigh on unplayable, it's ridiculous to see a ball behave like that on the first morning of day one of a test match.

Another one which bounced a lot off a length and hit the bat high up, not the best shot though.

Difficult to judge this score until we bowl but I get the feeling 250 wouldn't have been a bad total on this pitch.

If Jimmy had backed away much further he would have collided with the square leg umpire.

Bairstow is keeping wicket, speculation Foakes may have been hit on hand when he was out.

Windies haven't got away from England this evening but we've bowled a bit too short for me.

We need some luck/inspired bowling after lunch if we have any hope of getting back into this test match.

Englands's patience and persistence is finally starting to show some reward. We've bowled very well today in the main, shame a couple of catches went down though.

Patient but effective batting by the Windies. Proper old fashioned test cricket.

WICKET! Stuart Broad finally gets his wicket! A leg-cutter finds the outside edge of Shai Hope's bat and it's a simple catch for Jonny Bairstow. Hope goes for 44, West Indies 151-3.
WICKET! Stuart Broad's on a roll! A straight delivery keeps very low and takes Roston's Chase's off stump for Broad's second wicket in four balls. Chase departs for 4, West Indies are 155-4.
WICKET! Now England have their man! Hetmyer responds to being dropped with a 4, a 6 and now he's gone. Anderson takes a great catch under a swirling high ball off the bowling of Moeen Ali. Hetmyer is dismissed for 21. 186-5.
WICKET! No playing that. Stuart Broad gets one to rise sharply off a length and it loops to Jos Buttler at third slip for a simple grab. Shane Dowrich goes for 31. West Indies 236-6.

A really frustrating day yesterday. The bowlers, particularly Broad, bowled well with almost no luck for example with very marginal DRS decisions, but our catching let us down badly. I remain far from convinced by Buttler in the slips, he's a 50/50 man in there and you need to be better than that at this level.
Goes without saying the first session will be huge today. England must roll over the remaining four wickets very quickly to have any chance of staying in this game.

at the end of the day the cricket isn't that important. All credit to him he is playing on.
