I sit in 18 and when the South Stand Ultras were in their pomp, I couldn't hear a thing! Lots of jumping up and down but bugger all noise. It was like watching one of those early silent movies.

What we need is 2 drums and a trumpet in each block. That would create an atmosphere. ...or our own brass band ! Grimethorpe Colliery? who are ya?

Longer songs we can sing would be good for getting the rest of the West going, fed up of one verse songs that fade out in 19/18. Chants we can do but where's the "Take me home Ottley Road" etc

Block 19 is never going to be great acoustically but I'd imagine the atmosphere seemed better yesterday as the fans were chanting towards the pitch and players rather than in the direction of the away supporters.
I'd imagine if those in Block 9 rabidly gesticulated and hurled obscenities at the family stand it would be less audible in the rest of the ground too. An interesting experiment to try at the next home game perhaps?

Because you can't hear it in block 14, but you can always hear the away fans a treat. I've sat in family stand and South stand and you barely hear 19! You could yesterday.... definitely louder and getting louder each game.... Seems finally the singers are organising themselves and making more noise with more energy and the rest of the ground starting to join in 👍 When i I arrived yesterday I thought Block 1, 2, 6, 7, 13, and S Stand were fuller than normal and was surprised when they announced the gate at less than 6000.... only 171 away fans I know but sure there was more there than usual?? maybe 'cashing in' on cash sales on the day

Our stands are designed like amplifiers that transmit sound, In block 19 yes you are close to the away fans but in a big stand the sound gets lost. With a small stand like the south stand the noise is amplified strait across the pitch = more noise.

One of the best atmospheres there has been at the new ground today. I agree with Pilch it is always so much better when we get behind the team. There are far too many occasions where the majority of the chants have been about abusing the away fans in general or even individual fans, whilst this may be amusing at times, it is so much better when they get behind the team and more fans get involved. There were times yesterday when most of the west stand was singing, this must give the players a real lift. Let's be the 12th man, I really think we could do something special this season.

I genuinely think repetitive songs work better too.
The Ben Godfrey song was ok in the first half but from the hour was building momentum until it was absolutely fever pitch.
"We're on our way" and "we're top of the league" have similar effect.
I'm loving we still sing "We're staying up" and I think even past 50 points we should keep on singing it because it's the ultimate challenge to all the pundits who wrote us off!

It's a myth that we spend half the game singing to the away fans. The fact is 90%+ of the time we are singing pro Salop chants.

It's a myth that we spend half the game singing to the away fans. The fact is 90%+ of the time we are singing pro Salop chants. This is true. When it does happen it's normally because their fans are being vocal and becoming the 12th man. We've not seen it as much this season because we're doing so well but when we're having a tough time at home the fans need to shut the away fans up just as much as they need to support the players on the pitch.

I've been thinking some more about this and I reckon the best chants are ones that give you earworm the next day.

Best way to ‘shut them up’ is surely to try and drown them out with songs of your own rather than the tedious ‘banter’ stuff though isn’t it? Have to say that block 19 have really stepped it up this season both in quality/humour (albeit from a low base) & volume. No coincidence it is now starting to spread around the ground & people are noticing an improving atmosphere. Long may it continue & safe standing offers another opportunity to build on this...

I have lain awake for hours at night unable to sleep because "We're on our way..." has been rattling around my noggin. I finally managed to clear it only for the Godfrey song to come along...

Not a noise thing but love to see a few of them really big flags round the ground. like in the champions league.
