This is the sort of thing you expect to see in a 3rd world country rather than in one of the most advanced cities in the world.

Totally shocking scenes.....I fear many more will have perished than the current 12 at the moment. The local council will have blood on their hands I'm sure...so so sad

Blame game needs ignoring for now, the most important thing is finding out how it started, why it spread and are any other tower blocks across the country a deathtrap like this was. If they are can they be rectified quickly or should they be condemned, only then should we start getting into the blame game. This is an absolutely horrific tragedy but we need to learn lessons from it and fast to ensure it doesn't happen again.

True, but the thing is the 2009 fire doesn't seem to have been learnt from Which is why they need to make sure it can't happen in a similar way again. Was the insulation on outside to blame for it spreading and where else is the same stuff used. My house has been insulated by a government scheme a few years ago, is that the same stuff and is it safe? It needs answering.

A single stairway for a 24-storey block. Bloody madness.

A single stairway for a 24-storey block. Bloody madness. It's more common than you think. The thing that will most likely be investigated is whether or not the cavity barriers were installed or installed correctly.

So a fair sum of money spent on the building not that long past by the sounds of it but instead of being spent on keeping it safe for those who live within the building it was spent on trying to make it less of an eyesore for those in the surrounding areas? This comes across as poor people getting shat on for being poor with truly awful consequences. Some of the stories coming out of all this...

The company that did the work was a phoenix company - it's previous incarnation put into administration because it was being pursued for an amount of £425,000. It has also done work on 16 other high rise flats.
One other thing - the absolute state of Theresa May today.

One means of escape for a building this size is, indeed, madness. A Fire Alarm system that was not audible, and I doubt tested weekly by those responsible for the building. Surely the test log will prove if it had been tested. Landings devoid of extinguishers of any sort, and I doubt if there was installed break glass alarm points for residents use.
And, a block of flats in an affluent area that was clad to diminish rain / weather damage. Or was it just for aesthetic reasons, I wonder.
I just hope that the public inquiry into this tragedy does not stretch into years. People need answers, and the sooner they are provided the sooner other buildings built on a similiar model can be made safe and their fire safety effectiveness improved.

For some reason your link didn't work for me.I do, a much bigger and more modern building. The fire alarms worked and everybody was evacuated before the fire penetrated the building. It was put out in four hours and nobody died.

A single stairway for a 24-storey block. Bloody madness. It is not that uncommon. Whatever your means of escape, that will need to be mixed with means of finding there is a fire, means of alarm, means of fighting the fire, and compartmentalisation. The bottom line is this would have been sorted in minutes with a sprinkler system. And I did read the external cladding could have been swapped for a fireproof one for just £5,000 more for the whole building.

The Queen and Prince William set an example to Theresa May of what the response should be on occasions like this.

Theresa May clearly does not like conflict as she showed pre election by not taking part in tv debates. Happy to hide behind others which could lead to her downfall. Her popularity is diminishing by the day. Nice to see Adele helping out at the scene and getting involved with the people she lives amongst. Mrs May please note.

As Prime Minister if May can't make the effort to speak to the people who have suffered as a result of this fire then she needs to stand down...

the disgusting daily mail has tried to name & shame the person whose fridge apparently went on fire as the person responsible for the tragedy. unbelievable The papers of hate - Daily Mail and the Sun.. Absolutely disgusting from the Sun journalist who pretended to be a friend of one of the victims to get an interview. As for May, it is very difficult for her to know what to do but a leader does need to face people and deal with the reaction of a tragic event like this. Sadiq Khan was completely empathetic and sympathetic to those who shouted abuse during his statement yesterday. I'm not the Queen's biggest fan but it was also good to see her out talking to the families and the friends. One thing that I am growing very very tired of, is the constant tweets and statements from Tory MP's and the PM about our heroic emergency services. It is simply empty rhetoric and they have continually cut our emergency services over the last seven years.

There is one clear thread running through all the articles on this subject.
Everything that has (or hasn't) been done over the years is all connected to cost.

I have been a 100% supporter of May, but her arrogance and complacency with the election and her complete lack of genuine emotion and decisive action with recent events has left a bitter taste.
Tories 1000% right Party but unfortunately not with TM at helm.
People are dying either from terrorists or potentially poor management, talking is no longer good enough...action, passion and pace in response is all I ask

The Tories have been in power for almost the whole of the time since that incident. They also voted down Labour's amendment to the Housing Bill a couple of years ago to make homes 'fit for human habitation'. There were 72 MP's that voted against that legislation who are actually landlords themselves. Guess which party the vast majority are from?

I believe Gordon Brown was PM in 2009. Nothing to stop him setting the ball rolling on reform.
I don't have any time for any of them.
