How does this work?
3 blokes go for a meal which costs them £30, so they all chip in a tenner. The Manager recognises them and tells the waiter to give them back £5 with his compliments. The waiter realises that splitting a fiver between 3 is not easy, so decides to keep £2 and give them each back a quid.
So, each man has spent £10 but gets back £1, meaning they've spent £9 on the night x 3 = £27; the waiter has £2, which totals £29. Where's the other pound gone?

They spent £10 each on the meal = £30 They get a refund of £5 Waiter keeps £2 They get a pound each £3 Therefore they have actually spent £8.33 on the meal (£25 / 3) The waiter got £2 £0.67 each kept by him The got £3 back £1.00 each £8.33 + £0.67 + £1.00 = £10.00 Whats difficult about that? I'd be carfeul of those dodgy street vendors in Stoke tomorrow on this showing!

Yes, clearly the money doesn't disappear, but if you went out with a tenner, and came home with a quid, you've definitely spent £9. As Manuel - our friendly waiter has £2, it seems as if Gordon Brown has been through our pockets. Interesting conundrum isn't it?
