It seems very unlikely that Mellon would make a layer supposedly foisted upon him by the chairman first choice left back for the full season. Similarly, if MD was found to be at fault for 29 games, either we really had no faith in or ability to sign anyone else for that position or our analyst was seriously tardy in bringing this to MM's attention and should be picking up a P45 round about now.
Seems more likely to me that MM has assessed Matt Sadler as his first choice player in that position and only wants one first team wage on the books in that position hence the impression that MD is being frozen out. Starting to look a bit silly if that is the case though, given the extent to watch Sadler has failed to impress thus far. Demetriou has shown a good attitude by staying and fighting for his place. I was critical of him at the end of last season and rated him as one of the players that would need replacing this year but, as a fan, I like to see players who are committed to the club and want to fight for their place rather than just jump ship when the going gets tough. Nice to see a player who wants to prove the manager wrong rather than just pick up another signing on fee elsewhere.
When I rated him as one for replacement last season, I envisaged a player of a slightly higher calibre than Brown or Sadler coming in so, on that basis, I'd like to see Mickey get a game next week at some point.
Oh, and I'd also support the assessment of others from the Chelsea game. MD looked way out of his depth, but in his defence I think a lot of that was nerves.

Like so many before him, there is no doubt in my mind that as MD has now been marginalised, he is sure to become a Town legend with attributes similar to that of Messi!!

In a nutshell, whatever the shortcomings of MD (and there are clearly a few), the performances of Sadler so far have NOT improved the situation whatsoever and have lost us the option of a left sided wing back (not counting Brown).
That's why this whole debate is being aired online.

Talking of Aron Wildig good to see him doing well at Morecambe assisted the first goal but had to go off injured, hopefully not to serious!

Left (wing )back is a weakness regardless of whether Sadler, Demetriou or Brown takes on the role. It feels like it's a case of who is less of a liability than who is the best. That's the real concern.

Overall I thought Sadler had a decent game yesterday and so did Brown and Tootle (apart from one error which led to the goal but I thought that was more down to good play by the Burton sub).
When Percival is fit enough to start I think Ellis will be the one warming the bench!

What everyone seems to be forgetting is that MD was part of the best defense in the football league last season if I'm not mistaken and maybe had his worst game against arguably the best team in Europe (maybe), Tootle and Ellis were half of one of the worst defences in league 1 history the previous season, I know who I'd rather see in Towns back 4/5

I think the reason that has already been mentioned is why MD is being shown the door, we had to offer him a decent wage to get his services and now the management has decided that he is not worth that much in wages so they are trying to get rid.

Man of the match for Cambridge last night, getting up the pitch and putting crosses in. Just the sort of player we could do with!!

I started this thread on August 30th and after watching today's inept performance I've got to say it's only enhanced my opinion. Sadler gets caught out of position, looks leggy and is currently a massive contribution to a v leaky defence. Not saying Demetriou would solve all of the problems (as clearly there are lots to address!) but I cannot watch Sadler for much longer!!! It's obviously a fob off saying that he didn't have league one experience and that's the reason he's not featured...as Mellon is happily starting 2 young v inexperienced loanees!
