There are and have been over the years some wonderful commentators who bring so much more than just details to events. Brian "Johnners" Johnson in the cricket was superb. David Coleman in his prime has to be the best for athletics. Murray "wot the fook am I talking about" Walker - irreplaceable in F1. Mottie has become a legend in footie, but Jonathan Pearce has added a different dimension - he knows so much and gets so worked up!
If I had to chose one person to cover an event - I'd probably go for Johnners - he never failed to make you laugh - and right now I could do with some of that!!!
N E 1 got any fave recollections or views on commentators?

Phil Ligget is top banana.
David "and the stands at Gay Meadow are shaking.. its almost as if an earthquake has hit Shrewsbury..." Coleman after Maguire's corner met by Sammy Chapman for goal 2 of Shrews 2-0 Man City 1979.
Best ever is Stuart Hall... Its a Knockout..class

Agree about Johnners' cricket commentary - could be the dullest period of play/raining but you wouldn't mind as Johnners would take you into his world, talking about what cakes he had been sent by women of a certain age, traffic that was going past the Oval at that moment, a charming young lady who had just passed by etc. A much missed commentator.
No matter how many times I listen to it, the notorius "Botham Legover" commentary still brings a huge smile to my face - "Do stop it Aggers"...

Richie Benaud
And I HATE Alan Green, he is the most cynical, critical commentator, and he doesn't tell you what is happening in the game, just what he thinks of the referees decision.

Can anyone confirm that Channel 4 are showing the tests v New Zealand live?
Cos my last day of school is Thursday 20th, the first day of the first test, and after that I'm on study leave, so my fingers are crossed!

Stuart Hall is totally barking but a genius!
Jim McGrath is class, how he can keep it together for a 36 runner sprint handicap race and call them all home takes some sort of preparation............
