I also didn't actually see any trouble Jamo (though I heard of plenty afterwards). But it's a funny thing how there obviously was a tangible menace in the air that we both felt (and my old man, who is usually oblivious to such things but in this case was clearly rattled). Still, just added to the feeling of adventure and a great Salop escape. A day that I will always fondly remember. I was about 14 years old for that game, I went with a school friend and his dad and parked in a small official Birmingham City FC car park right behind the home terrace. We just sat in the car after the game after removing all STFC hats and scarves waiting for all the home fans to disappear. Apart from the goals and bricking it in the car park, the thing I remember the most was all the blues fans who had been singing and stuff during the game at the rear of the long terrace running along the side of St. Andrews like our. Riverside terrace coming down into the clearing and playing what looked like a massive game of British Bullldog, Town4life, the cHelsea game you spoke of, next time you talk to Podge ask him for his memories of Chelsea visiting Shrewsbury, I'm sure I recall him telling me that's how he lost his front teeth You must be about my age (43) then Bertymax. There was a good Town following that day, including a lot of the EBF, who used to go to games back then. We were on one side of the old big kop end with the low metal roof, separated from the main home support by big nets strung from the roof to the floor. Brilliant acoustics and both sets of fans made a huge noise, with the Blue lot getting riled up like a bunch of hornets as the game progressed. Think Colin Robinson and some other town players came down in front of the town section at the end to celebrate but were ushered off pretty sharpish.

Almost (42) SIJ! yea, recall all the EBF types right down at the front of the terrace climbing on the fencing at the end of the game, we were near the front too but right on the far right corner close to the main home stand, I remember some guy trying to drape an enormous Union jack on the fence just below us and some elderly lady giving him grief as no one would have been able to see a thing.
I might be wrong but I seem to remember that there was a possibility Birmingham could have been relegated too if they lost and other results went against them, although this could of been the scenario from a couple of seasons after this as we played them again away at St Andrews (and won 1-0 I think) Nasty as the atmosphere was, it could have been so much worse!

Found myself surrounded by Derby fans at the Baseball groins when I was about 16 which was interesting!!!!! Would love to have met the bloke who saved me by clearing a gap for me to run
Also for some mad reason went to Millwall v Portsmouth at the Old Den. 'Fun' started at London Bridge station when Portsmouth fan jumped on train to escape. Already had his nose splattered all over his face.
So pleased things have improved so much

Went with a West Ham fan to Millwall v West Ham in the early 90's - saw one person stabbed about half a mile from the ground and another thrown onto the tube tracks at New Cross Gate - I remember thinking to myself that I should never go to see Millwall at home again.
Was slightly concerned watching Town v Orient midweek in winter in the Leyland DAF at around the same time - I was somewhat conspicuous in the away end - but no trouble at all even when waiting at the station for the tube home surrounded by Orient fans.

Hi All Just to let you know that Paul "Podge" Davies is alive and well and living in Chancery near Aberystwyth and has a flat in Barry south wales where I now work as a local bus driver having given up coach driving a couple of years ago so I am able to go to a lot more Salop games. It was whilst I was at Burton last week that Paul Harris told me there was a lot of talk about me on blue and amber so I thought I would find out what was going on. Yes Bertymax I remember Chelsea very well after the game there must have been 100 of them chanting as they walked up pride hill and there was about 50 of us and you can imagine it kicked off and yes I got a good beating and lost a few teeth and it cost me about £250 in fines and costs the following week. It was in 1992 I think when I got a 3 year ban from matches when we played Northampton at home and I think they were Bury fans in our end and we just kicked off and it was about 2 weeks later that I got a visit from PC Roy Davies (No Relation) who asked me to come to the police station and there I was in my own TV show. After I got banned I was lonely for a while but about 4 months I got myself a job as a coach driver and started traveling the world and it my mind off football, although I still kept my eyes on results. It was about 2 years when I got fed up of traveling and got myself a job driving local buses in Cardiff and south wales which gave me the chance to get to watch Salop games. I bought The Cottage in Chancery in 2002 whilst I was working there and I use it as a get away from it all home where I can go and just chill out and relax from work in the big city. As I write this I am preparing for the 400 mile round trip to Luton on 8th January and look forward to seeing anyone that remembers me there. If anyone would like to stay in touch my email is paul@salopodge.plus.com my home phone is 01970626009 or my mobile is 07905033556. Thank you Paul Harris for reminding me to look at Blue And Amber and remember folks I'm Shrewsbury Till I Die and yes I was born on the riverside around 1974. COYB let's win this league for my mate Monty who sadly left us last year and he was a true legend R.I.P Monty let's not forget you.

Think Podge's surname was Davies. Podge'certainly would of gone to Smithy's aid if he had been around but stopped attending matches after getting banned when some Bury fans got into the wakeman end when we were playing Northampton I think...long story. No it was not Paul "Podge" Davies but I believe it may have been Paul Harris and yes had I been there I would certainly have gone to smithy's aid

Not that I was involved but I happened to be on the North Yorkshire Moors of all places that weekend with some people from Nottinghamshire and when I said I was from Shrewsbury remember them telling me Shrewsbury football fans had caused lots of bother in Mansfield at a football match, if your incident happened at a motorway service station, this could have been some afters?
