Cheap shot or superb marketing?Saw the one outside Monty's prior to picking up the daughter from the Theatre. Found it very informative but it wouldn't stop me drinking in say The Armoury.

good marketing owd lad ... many pubs use them in the big city centres and supermarkets use them too .. the customer has the right to know the comparison of pricing in different town centre libatory and eating outlets....

No different than Aldi comparing their prices to Tesco, Asda et al on T.V.

I seriously doubt anyone has actually weighed up going to Wetherspoons or the Armoury based on the price of a pint.
A bit like the Waitrose vs Sainsbury comment by Stephen Fry - many will be drawn to the reassuringly expensive - I think this is a bit of an own goal in a town like Shrewsbury.

I cant see what is the problem. Yes it may be selective on what it displays but as long as its factually accurate then I dont see it as an issue

It's good marketing. And helpfully keeps the morons who drink in Wetherspoons pubs all in one place.

Exactly - Percy has it spot on with the Sainsbury quote from Stephen Fry

I've been in wetherspoons for a meal, but I'd never use one as a "local". No atmosphere as far as I'm concerned. I prefer an old traditional pub, even if it costs more for a pint. I can still get a pint of real ale for £2.80 around by me anyway.

The 'Posher pubs' should also put signs outside with the same price comparisons but with a footnote
"You get what you pay for"
All's fair in love and war....and bar prices.

Each to their own, but 'Spoons pubs are horrible soulless places. Pubs for the mass market.
As l have got older I've realised that there's more to pubs than beer.

Can't see a problem, unless it's not accurate, which I doubt.

I can still get a pint of real ale for £2.80 around by me anyway. I know what you are saying but obviously most Wetherspoon's are not in the town centre so are not meant to be 'local' pubs. And that could be said of the majority of pubs in Shrewsbury town centre (and across many town centre's). There are a small amount of pubs that do have regular's but the majority are just appealing to the weekend or food crowd. The appeal of Wetherspoons is the reputation of being cheaper than many places, the downside is as you have said there is little atmosphere and they are the same up and down to the country (it amazes me how people visit other towns & cities and head straight to a Weatherspoons). I detest the Shrewsbury Hotel but dont mind Monty's so much however its not somewhere Ive regularly gone to. Going back to this story, Ive seen a lot of stuff on the net about it and its coming across as a national chain being nasty to local small businesses. However its not like these are old fashioned pubs struggling to compete against the national chains, these places have had a lot of investment and drinks can be as expensive as the Wetherspoon's board makes out. Like I say I really dont understand what the issue is, if they dont want their prices highlighted then Id suggest lowering them.

I find it hard to understand why anyone bothers with Monty's when you can go to the Nags, the Loggerheads, the Benbow etc. I prefer pubs with a landlord rather than a "manager" especially when said managers all seem to be aged about 12, with acne and a voice on the verge of breaking

Think your being harsh on Weatherspoon's which is head and shoulders above any other 'large pub chain', and have shown that prices can be kept down and still make money....A great success storey..... Having said that i would use one during the day for a good value pub lunch but would not frequent at night.... but then I don't go into any bar that needs a doorman (including the Armoury which I find soulless with a unique background noise I can only describe as a hullabaloo ) so as has been said, Nag's, Coach, Loggers are for me but hardly popular for groups 'on the pull' and if they were we'd have no where to go..
You cant compare it with proper pubs BUT compares favourably with the likes of Walkabout, Slug and lettuce et al ........................

The only possible use I can see for a weatherspoons is a pint at the airport or breakfast when traveling.
But then their real ale festival last week was £1.65 a pint, which would have been rude not to!

I can't say I'm a fan of Wetherspoons because it doesn't matter how cheap the beer is it's whether you enjoy it or not that keeps you going back.
£5 a pint or £1 a pint it doesn't matter, it depends what you want from your time spent there.
Wetherspoons in Wellington is one of the best I've been in, even if it does take half an hour to get to the toilets.

Personally I can't understand the following:-
(1) Why anyone would drink alcohol? (2) Why anyone would want to drink alcohol in a pub? (3) Why people can't enjoy themselves without the need for an alcoholic drink?
EDIT: Forgot to add "but that's just me"

So what you are insinuating is that because I choose not to drink alcohol I am not a real man and as a result partake in traditionally feminine activities such as needlework? Are you so insecure about your own manhood that you have to cast aspersions about others? When you point an accusing finger at somebody there are usually three pointing back at you.

Naw, it's just a very old joke, totally non-PC and definitely not to be used nowadays unless you feel that the recipient is someone who will not take offence. So, no insinuation intended whatsoever.

not wishing to change the thread, but this afternoon the government lost one of it's own bills on Pubco's and the brewing trade, the lib dems and labour combined to defeat Tories who wanted to put off any action for 2 more years.
