First one back, really?
To quote a phrase I've heard a few times this season, that wouldn't have happened last season... we won a penalty!
A few observations:
All four strikers have scored in three league games. Joe Mangle or whatever his name is and Akpa Akpro, well if they're the backup strike partnership this season then we're gonna score some serious goals.
Connor Goldson is future captain material no doubt about that.
I like Wesolowski, a real ankle biter. Lawrence might be captain but I think Woods and JW look the part to me.
Clark very impressive again.
The fluidity of our play was a real pleasure to watch at times. And how much nicer on the eye is it to have a pair of centre backs who can play to feet?
We've witnessed some comedy goalkeeping performances over the years (mainly our own) but that was something else tonight. Before the first goal you'd probably say Accrington were edging it.
Never the less, great stuff again Town. Onwards and upwards.

Felt a bit sorry for Accrington tonight - never seen a side shoot themselves in the foot quite so badly in the first half.
Great to see us get 4 goals and stroll to an easy win but still slightly Roy Walker of a performance "good but not quite right"
Just need a little more movement between midfield and attack to really cause sides trouble and have that step up in pace to break sides down in tight situations. Sure that will come with games though and plenty of options on the bench if we need to change things. Thought Robinson added something to the side when he came on.
Onwards and upwards and great starting point to work from and push onwards.

That was comedy gold tonight. One of the worst goalkeeping performances I have ever seen at any level of football. Just what was he thinking!?
Well done the town, good professional job and 4-0 certainly didn't flatter us. One minor criticism could be leveled at us was that we perhaps moved down the gears in the last 15 minutes but I actually quite liked that because we obviously realised it was perhaps more beneficial to save energy for the game on Saturday than go all out for a 5th.

In fairness to that keeper, the bouncing ball for the second was spinning wildly. He had to come for it, and once he had it was down to luck as to how much it turned. Still great fun to watch!
In terms of our performance, well, not too much to add. Mangan and Akpa Akpro tore the Accy defence to bits - Mangan evidently has good technique and work rate to go with his pace and poaching, and if he keeps himself on the straight and narrow will prove a big asset whichever level we find ourselves in.

For me that was a salient reminder that we are back in Division 4.
Accrington are a hardworking side who did try and play football when they had the ball (at least until they went down to ten men.) They did, however, look very short on quality and we looked so much better in every part of the pitch. Without meaning to be disrespectful I really don't think we had to get out of second gear. When we did up the tempo we scored the goal of the match in a second half where they were set up to frustrate and keep the score down.
Tougher tests to come in the next few weeks for sure but we have more positives than negatives and a platform is being built for the season. It's nice to be able to look forward to the next few months with a bit of hope.

It's very difficult to work out how good we are due to the performances of the opposition.
Blackpool were totally unfit and in no way ready for football having only just assembled their squad days before and cocked up some registrations
Accrington were shocking tonight - 2 truly awful defensive display, helped by 2 awful pieces of goalkeeping and marking from a corner - we got 3 goals up without any effort.

My thoughts.
Great to actually see a free scoring game. It's been a while.
I thought we were exposed a bit at times by lump ball play from Accy, and also from the physicality. That said, the ref didn't seem too interested in protecting Town players.
Most of the pressure Accy applied to us, was down to us - either lack of concentration, complaceny, it was just a little untidy at times and Accy, fair play, they didn't sit back and simply defend.
I felt the scatter gun of subs really broke the game up and essentially, made it a bit of a non-event for spectators from about the 70th minute. That said, our aim is to gain points and clean sheets.
Enough of the 'learning points'. Overall, a very solid performance and great to see everyone of the players fighting for possession and competing to control the game.

You can only beat what's put in front of you. A harder test lies in wake this Saturday when we go to Northampton , hopefully full of energy after we saved some tonight . And MM with a big selection headache .

Great to see 4-0 on the score board.....it's been a while .
The fourth goal was an absolute peach, great team goal.
The fight for the two striking berths is now going to be very tight and I am sure Vernon and Collins will realise they have a fight on their hands to get back into the team.
Some great possession play tonight from town until the subs slowed the game down after 70 minutes.

My ratings and thoughts -
Leutwiler - 7 - Did what he had to well (albeit not much), a couple of sharp saves 2nd half from free-kicks. Distributed well. Gayle - 7 - A few misplaced passes first half, but generally solid. Played in a superb cross second half which nobody gambled on. Goldson - 8 - Another solid performance from Connor, who defended well and got a goal to boot. Only downside is that he lost a few headers against their no.9. NKP - 7 - Reliable at the back defensively, however first half played a few risky balls into the midfield when they had opposition closing them down quickly. Not as good as his performances vs B'pool and Tranmere IMO. Demetriou - 9 - Thought he had a superb game tonight, both defensively and offensively. Very solid at the back, made a great run for the 4th, and played in a number of inviting crosses. Joint MOM. Vincent - 7 - Not yet 100% convinced by him. Extremely unlucky first half when after executing a magnificent turn the ref blew up to attend to the injured Accy players. Made a few decent runs, and unlucky not to score second half when their keeper made a superb save, but should have tested the keeper from his one-on-one first half. Wesolowski - 7.5 - Did all the nitty gritty stuff well, and passed it about with confidence. Impressive display. Lawrence - 7 - Showed some flashed of his undoubted class and ability first half, but a bit rusty with his passing. Sure to improve with game time. Clark - 7 - Linked it up well and a few decent runs and touches, but didn't really stamp his authority onto the game. JLAA - 9 - Continued from where he left off Saturday, and was immense, particularly first hour or so. Linked up well, showed some good strength and pace, along with some lovely touches and runs. Terrorised the Accy defence. Joint MOM. Mangan - 8 - Did well for his goals, especially chasing down a lost cause for the first. Good header for his second, and showed good link up skills. Looks a very good player, and a contrasting forward to the other 3 at our disposal. Looks a very good centre forward,
Robinson - 7 - Some good touches and turns, and sprayed some decent passes about. Didn't appear to be in top gear though. Caton - 7 - Glimpses of his pace and ability, but didn't run at the full back as much as I'd have liked him too. Woods - 7 - Some good passes played, but didn't really affect the game. Came on when his team-mates appeared to be in 'training ground' mode

Agree with Demetriou. Excellent game. Rare in a 4-0 win with little defensive work that a LB will be MOTM without goals/assists but he was really impressive tonight.

Getting a 4-0 win after only 3 competitive games with a completely new squad is brilliant stuff.
Great to see Akpa-Akpro and Mangan seize their chances too and shows others in the squad that they have to keep performing.
Says something when Collins and Grandison (key performers in our promotion) can't get a game.
Let's keep this winning run going!

I particularly like this from Mellon's post-match interview: “If I tell you that the lads are unhappy with the way that they finished the game and were not pleased with certain spells during the game that will tell you the type of dressing room that we’ve got."

At this early stage it says nothing that Collins and Grandison can't get a game. Collins couldn't get a game early on in our promotion season. Both will play important parts as the season develops IMO.

Great game and as Mellon states, could've done more.
Isn't it nice that we can take players off and replace them when they've done well with equally as good players.
Also, we often talk about players not having had game time and not being match fit. Andy Mangan only played six games last season. If he's not match fit yet, imagine what'll he'll be like when he is.

Good pre-season friendly. Whadd’ya mean that was a league game? All that tippy-tappy stuff 2nd half it HAD to be a PSF surely. Accy literally didn’t touch the ball for 2 and a half minutes after the 2nd half kick-off, we must have strung together about 75 passes.
Any 4-0 win is great obviously, but the sending off spoilt the contest a bit. The atmosphere was as poor as I can remember (for a win) at either the new ground or the old Medda. I never thought I would say this – but fair play to Mallet for providing the cabaret and trying to liven it up.
The Akro Prop was excellent. Demetriou – I understand the plaudits, his surging run to start the 4th goal was great (a sublime team goal) – but in an odd way he reminds me of a LB version of Grandison inasmuch as he was totally AWOL from his position a few times, particularly first half. Hopefully we will iron that out otherwise we may get punished by better teams.
And good to see Victorian values alive and well at the GM. How young were the ball boys doing that night shift? They looked under 5. Roland probably has them sweeping his chimneys on Sundays.

I love reading all these positive comments! It is a lot more calmer logging on here so far this season than last!
The depth of the squad is good to see and must be rewarding as supporters to see the hunger of the strikers that have come of the bench and taken their chances well! No pressure on mr akpro to slot our first penalty away since we pretty much moved to the new ground!
Keeping both feet on the ground and will take each result as it comes. If we are still up there with 10 games to go then I will have a squeaky bum!
Well done town, keep it going!!!

I thought Demetriiou was excellent last night..... Good professional performance last night and rightly conserving energy for Saturday. It is absolutly fantastic that we can change our front 2 and the 2 that come in are just as dangerous (Mangan was brilliant and Akpro can hold any ball up) and also swap our best performing midfielder (so far) for the club captain!!
Another positive I picked up last night is our delivery into the box from open play is streets ahead of previous seasons.
Well done Town.

The funny thing about Mallet and block 17 was that everyone ignored him. Well at the back we did anyway.
It was like a small child demanding attention. Just ignore them.

Block 17 - where all atmosphere dies... Atleast Mallet gives it a go Without wishing to get into a tiresome argument about who sings and who doesn’t I would point out that atmosphere dies pretty much everywhere. On a personal level I have been known to get the odd chant and song going. As have others. The difference is that we don’t give a t0ss either way if people join in or not. We’re grown up like that. Anyway nobody was criticising or praising Timmy, they were – you know - just ignoring him. This was funny considering the amount of effort he was putting in.
