Why are people staying away this season?Nearly a 1000 down on the gate vs hereford last season. We are down on numbers in the first 4 games of the season compared to last season.

Just some thoughts.....
Today's match...
Early kick off? Poor away following for a local derby?
Season so far....
Three home matches in a week (including Swansea in the LC) Economic downturn Post play off blues - yet another season of league 2 football

It's just boring even when we win. No atmosphere, no fun.
It's also too expensive.

Poor marketing.... Even with our own marketing manager we fail to sell our match sponsors packages (eg Plymouth), no adverts / flyer's distributed locally to pubs, no special deals (and we don't even try and sell sponsorship for the back of the shirt OT)............... Match day experience for younger fans has worsened with no half time entertainment together with ugly scenes at the end of last season seems to have affected the numbers sitting in the Family Stand.......... Doesn't seem to be any planning to improve the match day experience same old dirge and ladies and gentlemen please take your seats........ Happily the team are performing well on the pitch though

Seems to me though I don't know the figures, but hereford didn't seem to have brought as many as last time.

Big away day on Tuesday that won't be cheap.
Times are tough economically.
I know a few people who were very put out by the end of the P&R services, which really did surprise me, because if they had a car there are plenty of options to park, with a bit of research.

I think in general we will be a little down on last season for the majority of games, home and away.

We ended last season on a low which combined with price increases wold not have helped, and it will take a while to get the numbers back up - keep winning however and crowds will improve.
It wouldn't hurt to see a few marketing initiatives along the way but I reckon we will still end the season with well over a 5500 average gate.

Dissapointed that Rovers is on Tuesday, would have liked it to be a Saturday with them being back in this league and there will be bugger all of us there with all the hype over Arsenal, Vale and today, i wouldnt be surprised if most people have forgot about this one!

first game of season for me, and i thought it looked very empty compared to some time last. I sit in the west and usually it was full, but plenty of spare, and the south looked really poor. Not sure why it is, guess people just thought last season was the one and maybe have given up a bit this. Although, the Hereford following was pitiful

Cost to watch 4th rate football.
Having to sit down.
Paying more if you don't buy tickets before the day.
Still it saves me a fortune and I get to do lots of things I didn't used to on a saturday.

just a thought but gates have increased almost 10% for some
and the swansea game hit many regular fans hard
the arsenal game is looming and travel and accommodation will cost far more than the entry
today might have been a different story had town looked after fans v swansea a smaller profit on the night may have resulted in a better long term attendance
fans vote by their feet
my company values would be be loyal to the fans, look after the fans, keep the fans coming
seems it might be more like
tell them to take it or leave it

Was at Stoke. But costs are dictating the way, as Pilch said, take in the extra games swans, Aresnal etc and people will choose which to go to, many will understandably sacrifice a game or 2 to go to Arsenal, hence selling almost 4k, not everyone can afford to go week in, week out and its been well documented that Shrewsbury is one of, if not the most expensive league 2 ground.

To start with only 537 from Hereford, would have expected around 800-900 which would then have put the attendance over 6,000, which is reasonable.
The 'cup run' with extra cost for Swansea and Arsenal games.
Generally households have a closer eye on expenditure at the moment so guess many are choosing games and will save money until the business end of the season.
Linked to the last comment, in recent seasons we have started very strongly then fallen away at the end and not achieved our objective of promotion. I suggest many supporters have lost the optimism and however well we start will question whether this season will be any different from previous seasons.
Last season had the factor of Turner returning to the club resulting in heightened interest and optimism.
No 'big' signings that bring 'customers' in. Not suggesting this is necessary to gain promotion but it generates interest.
On a slightly separate note I wish the club would re-categorise the seats in the lower half of the West Stand near the halfway line. I believe they are in the most expensive price bracket and are rarely occupied. Surely it would be better to have that block full and more empty seats in the block nearest to the South Stand.

560 less Town fans for this year's match with Hereford than last years.
Pretty significant in my view.
But mainly due to cost other than anything else.

agree that its cost, one time of day i would never dream of missing a home game, now its just too expensive,2 home games in a week and your looking at the best part of £40, its a big ask for most people nowadays,

Think this might be an issue across the board in football
Attendances and tv deals have been on an upward curve for the last 20 years, but the increasing costs of going to games, travel and getting the tv packages; together with tough economic times might see attendances suffer a bit over the next few seasons
For Town I think if we can stay in or around the promotion spots attendances will hold up ok, but if we have a poor run and are in mid table we might get some disappointing attendances

The dwindling effort from the club in helping supporters to get to the stadium must be playing a significant part. Travelling in from Welshpool, I used to be able to park at Oxon & use the Park & Ride shuttle bus from there. Due to numbers not being high enough, that service was completely scrapped. (<< can't believe the board censors this ) Since then, I've had to park at Shirehall & use the Park & Rides from there. More driving, but the service always did the trick! I didn't know that the Shirehall service has now been cut (my bad), so yesterday turned up at 12:00 for a 13:00 kick-off and waited until 12:40 for the town service bus to turn up & take us to the Meadow. I must admit, I was getting a bit worried that we'd miss kick-off before the bus showed-up. It seems to be getting more difficult as each year passes, and while I'll always do what's necessary to get to a game, the more casual fan will not bother. In the past, if someone suddenly decided they fancied going to the game on the morning of a match, it was so easy to walk from town to Gay Meadow & get in. I can't imagine they'd fancy going to the lengths required to get to Greenhous Meadow as the current situation is!

I agree, the lack of money is the problem. Things which didn't seem a luxury before do now. It also shows the importance of a decent cup run - if we end up 500 down per home league game that's 11,500 tickets per season to make up. It's worth considering in the 'Glory' fans/meaningless cup match vs True fans/bread and butter matches debate.

Cricket season is late finishing this year too, there's a couple of hundred off until the end of this month.

re: Park & Ride - Meole Park and Ride is only a 10-15min walk from the ground - I used it for the first time at the weekend and will definitely be using it again in the future - excellent location and no charge. People have an eye on Arsenal away - it is glamour and there will be expense, Hereford at home isn't exactly a glamour tie and lets face it a win was on the cards. Holiday season is coming to an end now as well as cricket season, let's look again in a months time when we are out of the league and JPT and only have FA Cup and League games left. I don't envisage many attendances in the 4,000's but lets face it this is still a long way from the poorly attending gay meadow days - even though you could stand then

Shows har far we come when we are moaning of gates of 5,500 plus at the Meddah. Theres too much midweek football at the start of the season for me,after the Arsenal game we would have played 6 out of the 7 opening Tuesdays of the season, its crippling financially. Expect a following of 700-800 at Vale mainly due to the Emeriates game

I don't think your supposed to park at Meole Park and Ride and walk which makes the whole transport plan involving Park and Ride even more crazy Don't imagine it will become a problem until fans start to park there in numbers so i should keep quiet

its been well documented that Shrewsbury is one of, if not the most expensive league 2 ground. It's neither the cheapest nor the most expensive. Of our away games so far, Oxford and Vale would certainly be significantly more expensive for me than home games. Don't know about Gillingham or Rovers. It looks to me as though most clubs are reporting lower crowds. Bradford's average has fallen below 10,000 where it used to be 12,000. Tickets for United - Spurs were on general sale just before the game. A couple of years ago you'd never get a United Premier League game on general sale, let alone for Spurs. I believe economic reasons are the biggest factor and that's why the effect is so widespread. Pubs, restaurants, sports clubs, holiday companies - leisure spending is down everywhere and it looks like it might get worse too.

Its all down to a shortage of money. I personally have to pick my games carefully and can only afford one game a month. I am sure I am not alone. Thanks to BBC Radio Shropshire I am still able to follow the games.

never understand why the club dont cut prices which would significantly increase attendance. say £10?
this would help to get behind the team, and would probably improve finances in the long run through people who want to come again, and possibly help to get the extra point that we needed for promotion. simple maths mr wycherley.

Lol another amazing post by yourself!! 5500 x 19 = 104,500 5500 x 10 = 55000 Over a league season 104,500 x 23 = 2,403,500 55,000 x 23 = 1,265,000 How do you suggest tw club makes up the 1.2 million difference. Possibly do some group buys offers I.e 5 matches for 4, buy 5 tickets get a programme free etc. U can't just cut prizes so drastically and expect to keep our place high in the league
