Ok so we lost last night, but it's not the end of the world. Port Vale were one of the teams I thought would be right up there in the promotion mix so to go away and just lose 1-0 in what was a very tight game isn't the worst result.
But here we are at the end of September and 9 games into the season and we're 4th on 17 points.
But, already this season we have played Bradford (bookies favourites pre-season), as well as Aldershot, Northampton and Rotherham (two of last season's playoff teams) at home, as well as Gillingham, Wycombe and Vale away. Those are all teams I thought pre-season would be in the top half and challenging for promotion at the end of the season.
Just seems to me that it has been a pretty tough start to the season really all in all so for us to be sitting 4th is really a good achievement, more so considering all the new faces that have only been at the club for only 3 months or so.
Just hope that now things might get a little bit easier on paper, we can avoid the dropped points against lower sides!!

I assure you, they won't. They certainly won't be in the top three, anyway. Maybe they'll make the play offs.

Vale are easily one of the best teams in the league this year. We'll see. its not that i particularly disagree, nor do i have any greater knowledge on the subject, but could you elaborate on your reasons why? you seem pretty sure so there must be some thinking behind it?

I'm just certain that they won't be in the top three. They may get promoted via the play offs, but I can't see them getting automatic. I expect i'll regret saying this though, and it'll be brought up against me in a few months!

I'm well happy how the season is going, think we've had a cracking start. We've had a tricky run of games and maybe one or two will say the return hasn't been what we expected however, we have more than held out own in these games and with a bit of luck come have come back with more (say from Wycombe and Port Vale). Not only does it look as though we have the squad to compete you do hope we may have a little bit put aside to invest if needs be... Very confident we'll do ok this season...

completely agree, this loss shouldn't put a downer on the entertaining start we've had to this season. this week was always going to be tough, and we were 10 secs away from 3 points at Wycombe and two posts away from a point at Vale, yeh we ended up with 1 point but the luck will go for us at times and with the obvious quality we have in the squad we'll do ok.
Turner is sure to bolster a good team with more quality loans too, so its all still rosy from my view.

Top 4...9 games in. I'd have snatched your hand off with that at the start of the season. Great start with an almost completely new side.
I would like to think we will be up at the business end of the table come the end of the season.

Two reasons why they will........Marc Richards and Justin Richards, add to that the likes of Tommy Fraser, Louis Dodds and Jemal Johnson(if they keep him which I suspect they will) and they'll be nailed on certainties to be play off candidates at worst and in my opinion promotion candidates with ease, the best team in the league by far.

The only change in my beliefs based on last nights performance is that Vale have some quality players and will be in top 3, the fact that Ned disagrees just reinforces that belief!
We will be up there no doubt about it, 2 evenly matched teams i thought who cancelled each other out in effect, neither keeper had much to do?
For us the quality of crosses was awfull all night and really let them off the hook, Sadler had his worst game in a town shirt in an otherwise solid back 4. They bossed the midfield for large parts and i remain unconvinced by the Macca/ Disley partnership, when Gt does turn to the transfer market this is where i think he will look first even when Mcallister does return.
Harrold again did well but looked out on his feet last ten though not surprising when he gets so little protection from refs! Dont understand why Jakey Torres was so upset at being replaced last night he was almost invisible for large spells giving away cheap possesion when he did get it, he will have better nights but Bradshaw last night looked by far the more threatening of the 2.
Credit both sets of fans for a cracking atmosphere and look forward to the rematch, we certainly owe them 1!

Don't give a stuff about Port Vale or their final league position. I would't get too worked up about Ned's prediction as i'm sure it mostly based on his dislike for all things Vale!
For us to be top 4 at this stage is quite remarkable. We've played good sides gone to tricky venues and quite possibly deserve to have more than 17pts on the board.
We've played some great attacking, entertaining football and in a short space of time GT has installed a completely different footballing philosophy at the club. All this has been acheived by not going over board in the transfer market and more pleasingly rejuvinating some players who looked like deadwood. For a new side to gel so quickly is very encouraging (indeed only SCS has made 50+ Salop apperances) and bodes well for the coming months when onfield partnerships and understanding will hopefully improve further.
Good times times to be a Salop fan and I predict even better times ahead!!

I'll say the same thing that i said after the Gillingham defeat, If we can win on Saturday against Torquay, then all we be forgotten and we can move on up the league, and push for top spot. If we fail to beat Torquay, then alarm bells may start to ring with a few supporters.

No side who goes up will lose less than 5 games in a season,it just happens that we have had a few tough away games in our first 5 away fixtures and lost 2 of them.So what,it is all about how we react to a defeat in the next game and i think we can do well like we did after the Gillingham game.

Vale fan in peace. Would agree your start hasn't been the easiest - nor has ours to be fair as we've faced 6 of the sides who currently make up the top 10.
I think you guys will be up there - just lacked a little bit of class around the box last night - the wide lads had bags of pace and that will always cause trouble at this level, but as so often with wingers at this level their delivery was abysmal. Harrold's a useful targetman and was certainly a handful but I wonder if you are perhaps a goalscorer light - Robinson whenever I've seen him has been a bit hit and miss and Harrold is a 12-15 man I'd say.
Thought you're centre backs had a good game last night - both looked pretty solid, and in all honesty they never let the Rico's get into the game too much.
As for us being up there come May, who knows. We've started well but no one wins anything in September and there is a long, long way to go. Personally have nothing against you lot, despite some of what has been said about Vale on here, and would like you to be up there, provided it's not at our expense, as you seem to have a decent side and a decent set-up.
Impressive following in terms of numbers last night as well.

Would also be good to both go up in the same season, as it would probably increase the rivalry, and bring the intenstity up a notch.

True - the rivalry has come out of nowhere really but I'd say there's more spice now on our games with you lot than there is with the Crewe games. I guess it all comes back to Rico's wonder goal at your place two years back. I'm sure with the resources that Turner should have behind him after the Hart money that you will be right up there come May.

I like you hoover! my 3, in this order are Vale, Chesterfield and Shrewsbury.... Agree with our Vale friend on the teams, although the order is debatable I would also add Rotherham to the mix for the sole reason they have a proven goalscorer at this level in the shape of Le Fondre. Rotherham are about as close to a one man team as you will find in this league in my opinion.
