www.stockport.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=228865Ex-County boss Paul Simpson is ready to take The Hatters to court for what he believes is 'unfair dismissal' at Edgeley Park. Simpson, formerly of Shrewsbury Town, was relieved of his duties at EP at the start of January having won just 5 of 19 matches with County. Peter Ward has taken charge in a 'caretaker' role, though the Hatters legend is now favourite for the job. Lord Peter Snape, director, hit out at the 44-year-old last week, saying the football under Simmo was 'hit and hope' and that 'Paul refused to work with Peter Ward and Alan Lord.' Simpson and his legal boffins are now preparing their case, which they believe is watertight, to claim compensation from the 2015 Consortium on the grounds of unfair dismissal - given that the ex-Manchester City man's remit was to keep County in the league, and we hadn't been in the bottom two all season at the time of his sacking. We are told that his legal men ruled out a case of 'constructive dismissal' as Simpson would have had to resign from his position to prove that he had been, as he believes, forced out.

Simpson probably has a case, he did what was asked of him, up to the date he was dismissed. Would he have continued to keep Stockport out of the relegation zone is debateable. It appears that his demise was not based on performance only, as is born out by his treatment of his assistant Ward. I have it on good authority that Ward was not the only one he had problems with and his management techniques alienated many in the club. Where does he go from here? In my view non league, or abroad.

As I said earlier, Stockport thought they had Gannon in place to take over and was a major reason for his dismissal, either that or a clever plan hatched by Ward. I hope Stockport go down what they did has a stench about it regardles of whether you like Simpson or not and he will probably win his case. I do agree he may have to take a step down the ladder for his next managerial job though.

There was a rumor doing the rounds regarding Simpson and his leagal team and that strange period in time when he got a new Contract at STFC despite us being prertty poor at the time.....
Wonder if the truth of that story will come to light anytime soon?

Any employer surely has the right to sack an employee if he is failing to maintain the standards of the company. Yes Simpson remit was to keep Stockport in the league but by all accounts in was also to work with the current staff which if you believe Lord Snape he failed to do.
Not sure any Chairman of a football club would be forgiven for waiting until relegation was certain when the team had been staring at it all season. Would Roland have been forgiven if he'd failed to accept Peters resignation and the Town had gone back into the Conference.

He's making a good living out of being a failed football manager. I think any manager would take issue with that statement when they have 2 promotions on their CV, even if they have not been able to achieve succes in the last 5 years.

Carlisle were relegated in his first season as manager. He has hardly been a success in his last three jobs. As many a manager will say you are only as good as you last result. Simpson last 3 results lost, lost, lost.

He took over at Carlisle part way through the relegation season and took them up through the playoffs the following season and then to promotion with the League 2 title in 2006.

What about his first full season there Ed? Martin, we know that you are one of the only two remaining members of the STFC branch of the PSSC.

Get a grip, Simpson had the biggest budget of any Town manager in many seasons that year!
He had players such as Holt and Davies who are now playing in the Championship (Davies soon of course) yet all Simpson could manage was a Playoff place whiich we only sneaked into with beating Dag & Red on the last day.
Any other Town manager would of got us up automatically with players like that Im sure, you forgot how bad that away form was that season Martin?
FFS we lost to Blyth that season too!
p**s poor manager and his son is a p**s poor footballer!

Martin not sure if you was there, but the performance at Wembley was very poor. Talk about luck how lucky is it to get into the last playoff spot on the last Saturday of the season because two teams who won more points had points deducted. Now thats what I call Lucky

How many clubs were deducted points that year Martin? Luck works both ways. Fair point! We'd prob missed out on the playoffs too given how dire the away form was, if he didn't have a budget like he had then OK fair play he'd done 'OK' however i'm sorry but when you've got a £400K rated striker up front for a start you gotta do better Martin than what happened!

You think he has done well. Well 2 out 3 of his he finished 4th from bottom, and if i remember correctly he escaped on the final day in one of those season. It seem that Everton are on the slide again this season after a couple of decen seasons.

He's making a good living out of being a failed football manager. I think that’s a tad harsh that Ant. His remit at Stockport was to keep them up and he was on course to do that. Success as a manger can’t be judged purely on titles won, promotions gained... On another note... I do find it a little strange that their chairman would make some comment on the standard of football on display too. If there only aim for the season was to avoid relegation then it would suggest that they don’t have the best players available. So with that in mind, I doubt too many expect to see decent football played…just got to do what needed to keep them out of the relegation zone and up until the point of his sacking, that’s what he was set to do.

We definatley would have missed out on the playoffs, and without all that money he had to spend, we would have finished mid table at best, minus Grant Holts goals. I'm sorry to say it, but he is a totally average manager, and maybe it's time for him to go back into Non league football to manage.

If this is about Moyes He was appointed in March 02 Finished that season 15th First full season 7th, followed by 17th, 4th, 11th, 6th, 5th, 5th, 8th 2003-04 they finished 17th, but 6 points clear of the relegation zone. Moyes has been in charge for a time too when Everton have had litttle to spend in comparison to many of their rivals Think your last game of the season memory would have been 97/98 under Howard Kendall when they survived on goal difference

Moyes has done well on a shoestring budget, Simpson did below expections on a massive budget! I think it's a bit of a myth that Moyes works on a shoestring budget, certainly in the last 4 or 5 years anyway. They've made some big signings. Decent manager though. As for Simpson, who really cares? The original case and post is quite interesting - a lot of managers are unfairly treated imo, but rarely anything seems to be done about it... but debating whether he was a good manager here. Again. Really?

Ant has hit the nail on the head. Simpson is clearly trouble and his Mr Nice Guy routine should fool no one.
Surely County have the right to sack him if they don't think he is doing a decent job? How many times have they been hammered 5-0 or 4-0 this season? As somebody has already said, they could hardly wait before they were down before acting. There was clearly something rotten at the club and the board felt they had to take action.
Knowing him, he'll probably get them on a procedural point but his record as a manager has rocketed downhill ever since he left Carlisle. He's too thin-skinned and obstinate, has an unfortunate habit of alienating supporters and producing rubbish football - in our case and Preston with good budgets - and his win percentage rate is poor.
Good luck County in defending yourself better off the pitch than Simpson's defences could do on it.

We have still not got rid of the legacy of Simpson..though Holden, L. Neal, McIntyre and Robinson are all out of contract soon.
Elder and C. Neal (I think) were given 3 year deals.

Simpson last 3 results lost, lost, lost. On that basis, Darren Ferguson's record is 2 posts, 2 sackings - lost, lost. Funny, I always think of him as a successful young manager. Come to that, his dad's record would have one or two losts in there as well. There's an old saying that all political careers end in failure. Most football managerial careers seem to as well.
