The bloke needs to resign after him being on the radio talking about the closure kids ward at the RSH. Please can anyone who is bothered about the kids ward staying open please sign the petition on the kids ward website please. This kids ward treats kids from as far away as Newtown,Oswestry and Whichchurch.

As much as these things are regrettable, some things must change, we cannot go opposing change just for the sake of it.
The country is ****ed after many years of reckless spending, so theer needs to be cloth cut somewhere, and without looking at the proposals in place and seeing if they are adequate then just blindly opposing any change just for the sake of it would be foolhardy..

Where's Whichchurch?
And Newtown is in Wales is it not??
Regardless of all the stupid sentimental postings and rivalry between Shrewsbury and Telford of over who's got the biggest town, this is actually about some childrens services being provided in Shropshire or possibly none as the current services at Shrewsbury are not up to standard and not far off being unfit for purpose.
I live within the Shrewsbury area but nearer the Welsh border than most, so I would have to travel far further to get to Telford than I would RSH - but if I had sick children I would rather they were treated at the best services possible, rather than ones that weren't up to scratch but were closer.

AInt you just being a bit selfish here? I am sure you would soon change your tune if you had a child that was seriously ill. My little girl has heart problems and i hope it never happens but having a 5 min trip to the kids ward in shrewsbury is much better than a 20 min trip to telford. This could be the differene between life and death. So i think your attitude stinks.

Nothing should come as a surprise as Kawcynski is a representative of a party whose leader in November 2009 said this: A second misunderstanding about our health policy is this:
People say that because we will stop further re-organisations of the NHS and implement a moratorium on the closures of District General Hospitals and their A&E and maternity units we are committed to the status quo.
It’s true, with the Conservatives there will be no more of the tiresome, meddlesome, top-down re-structures that have dominated the last decade of the NHS.
Labour act as though they’re just re-arranging the furniture in the front room and not the nation’s largest employer.
The disruption is terrible, the demoralisation worse – and the waste of money inexcusable.
And yes – we will immediately stop the proposed closures of vital local services that are happening under this Government too.On the Today programme earlier this week he tried to say that although he said there'd be no radical re-structure of the NHS, what he meant was there would be, but of the type he approves of. Listen to his mendacity here: news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9363000/9363655.stmThis cannot be explained under the cover of deficit reduction as it will be both hugely expensive (estimated to cost 3-5bn) and risky. Neither is it in either party's manifesto or the coalition agreement. As ever, what's driving the Tories on is opening everything up to 'the market' and handing public services over to the profiteers of the private sector. Whether you agree with the direction they're going or not, it's surely beyond doubt that Cameron - knowing the Tories aren't trusted with the NHS - promised no radical re-structure of the NHS to win votes but once installed in power wasted has wasted little time in pushing ahead with a pro-market programme. Even the arguments in support of this are of the utterly disingenuous, 'straw man' variety. His favourite one appears to be 'we can't just do nothing'. As if the two choices are between deliberate stagnation or the 'marketisation' programme.

Martin - 5 mins from Ditherington to RSH, really? 5 mins would be good going during the day! You have got to get past the station, up smithfield road, around welsh bridge, that could take 5 minutes itself even with the blue lights flashing. There is nowhere for the traffic to go to get out of your way, and 4 junctions with traffic lights along that section. I think telford could be quicker ;D

Martin - 5 mins from Ditherington to RSH, really? 5 mins sounds about fair...I'm sure the ambulances are pretty familiar with the route from Ditherington to RSH! To be fair, if my kid was seriously ill, i think i'd give em a run for their money too. Unfortunatley,we better get used to this sort of thing under the conservatives, just like we better get used to certain Tory apologists on this forum banging on about how its all Labour's fault after years of spend spend spend. Change the record boys.

Forget changing the record, the fact of the matter is simple, the current spending is unsustainable, regardless who is in charge.
Change is needed, and if we can change, cut out some of the red tape, and improve then so be it, if people lose jobs, that is unfortunate.

Outstanding post shrewsace.
I have two broad questions.
1 Why is it supposed that GPs will be better able to handle an £80bn budget? Will this be in their spare time or won't they be bothering with actually seeing patients any more? Seems particularly odd when so many GP practices are run by managers recruited by the GPs themselves - they don't even manage their own practices (and why should they, they're doctors first and foremost).
2 Where is the government's mandate for such a huge change? The government consists of two minority parties, neither of which was elected on a promise of radical NHS changes. I care about the NHS too much to hope these "reforms" fail but there is no legitimacy in what the government proposes to do.

Change is needed, and if we can change, cut out some of the red tape, and improve then so be it, if people lose jobs, that is unfortunate. That's only part of the story though. Change is needed? Change is always needed! The pace and extent of the changes and the spending cuts should be the real debate. The Tories successfully hijacked that debate by pretending the country was bankrupt. It wasn't then and it isn't now. There are, and always have been, other options but Labour was too distracted by its leadership campaign to point that out and the media got into a brainless acceptance that it was the Tory way or no way. Still, as a senior Tory minister was quoted this week, if we go into another recession (20% chance and rising apparently), "we're all *****d".

All well and good but at the expence of a childrens ward that will cause loss of young lives.I dont think that is the answer where the country should save a few quid do you?

It's not just about people potentially losing their jobs, its about people possibly losing their lives. Shrewsbury is too big a town not to have a maternity unit, driving that extra 20-30 mins to Telford could make all the difference in some cases. Besides, both my two were born in Copthorne, and that is part of their sense of identity being town fans. I'm not too sure how future town fans are going to feel about the prospect of being born in Telford!

Its quite intersting the piece Ant's put because in normal traffic getting to the PRH would be quicker.
I think the thing that gets me is, is that when the PRJH was threatened everyone that end of the A5 went nuts. Here, it as a slight murmur.

Really do not think people really give a flying toss where they were born......... my lad was born in germany, and he finds this not in the least bit a factor of supporting STFC!! sometimes sentiment has to be taken out of difficult descisions!!

I'm not too sure how future town fans are going to feel about the prospect of being born in Telford! That has about as much to do with the issue as cheese rolling. I don't pretend to understand the issue entirely but do agree both Towns deserve a first class facility. There was much ado about PRH losing a couple of wards a few years ago, I recall a Salop fan laughing on the facebook campaign to save it. Hopefully if the Government can save enough money then both Hospitals will stay in the present capacity. A little concerned the PCT staff are already leaving.

RSH maternity unit is not a failing service. Neither is it dealing with dwindling numbers of patients or record complaints. There are no grounds for the proposed cuts other than it will help meet proposed saving targets and that aint a good enough reason.
