Its bad enough watching a poor performance by your side on national TV but its rubbing salt into the wound when you have to tolerate your failed ex manager giving out "expert" analysis. I found the comment about us "throwing the kitchen sink at it this season" particularly ironic as we broke our club record transfer fee paid, when he was manager. Add to that the performances of Disley and Holden (Simpson's buys) last night and you can see why I may have found his appearance just a little bit irritating. My feelings towards him have gone from relief (when he left) to now hating the sight of him. Apologies to any PS supporters out there

I liked his comments about 'proven goalscorers' while waxing lyrical about Ryan Lowe.
I didn't catch quite what he said but started with something along the lines of "and if you've got one, as a manager..."
I can only presume he didn't conclude with 'give them away to Oxford United'.

Precisely. He needs to remember that it will take us at least one season to get over debacle that was his reign - cheek of the man.

I can understand why they chose him, as he is a decent lower league pundit and - on paper at least - he can lay claim to having more knowledge about Shrewsbury than most of the alternatives. However, I was immensely irritated by his presence last night. The (barely) unspoken insinuation throughout that we were wrong to sack him got very grating very quickly.

He had a subtle little dig at one point before the match, saying 'the club was in the same position as they were this time last year when he was in charge'!
In other words, 'why was i sacked'?
Coz you were crap Paul!!!!

I know he made a few little jibes, but even though he failed with us he didn't do it on purpose, it's probable a case of us Town fans being the bitter ones if we are honest!

On the one hand you can say look where we were this time last year with Simmo to where we are now, on the other hand you can look at all the players who 'weren't good enough' for us but are now doing very well elsewhere, Constable, Symes, Pugh etc etc . . . its not just league position that he should be judging his managment on.

Simpson did irritate me last night. He was and is a woeful manager. He comes across to me like a weisel who wouldn't confront you face to face with a problem. A petty annoying man with no backbone.

Could well be right, its just a bit galling to here him say that we HAVE to win promotion because we have thrown the kitchen sink at it this season, very rich when you consider the funds he was given and then wasted. No different really to how I feel when I hear Ratcliffe criticising teams/players for their defending during commentary/punditry. The irony of it all.

He is right though we have thrown the kitchen sink at it in the last 4/5 seasons, we haven't at any point been good enough because non of the men placed in charge have known how to build a team. Also the fact that Fans call for bloody as soon as things start to run off track doesn't help...every bloody summer we have 6/7 new players arriving...that does not help...did Strauss and Flower drop Cook or Pieterson for the Ashes? No they didn't they backed them and backed them to come good and bang...they repaid. They know how teams are built and run.

For matches such as these Sky usually bring in a manager or two from the teams competing with the clubs being featured. It would have been much more interesting to hear the comments of - say - Ronnie Moore, John Sheridan, etc.
As for football punditry in general it is usually the province of ex-players who have either had ultimately unsuccessful management careers (eg Mark Lawrenson) or have had the sense not to try management (eg Alan Hansen). They are perfectly competent at assessing the technical merits of a game - which players have performed well and how the teams have performed as a unit. It is when they start talking about running clubs, motivating players or picking teams when I start thinking whether they are really qualified to offer an opinion.

His demise was in his own hands. Who will ever forget the post match Burton ramble. That, in no small way, ensured that when he eventually left the club, it was to a chorus of " **** off tosspot " rather than a gentler parting.

Whatever people say, when a manager leaves a club it is human nature to want the next bloke to be poor in comparison. Especially after Paul Simpson was sacked.
So as irritating as it was to watch for Town fans, we would have all done exactly the same.
But, what is good for us, is that we've got a much better manager than him, the set-up is a lot more sound, the football generally much better to watch, and I believe the results will come.
So we win.

Why would you want the next Manager to be poor, surely you would want him to be better. Iknow what you mean Matthew, but very poor explanation . See me tomorrow.

Because you want to be vindicated in the belief you did a decent job. Mark Hughes must be desperate for Roberto Mancini to fail. If someone got your job and then was massively better than you, you'd look a bit of a tool. For instance, when George eventually gets your job it will highlight your incompetence.

As Simpson biggest fan I am beginning to doubt that: we have a much better manager (results do not indicate that), the set up is a lot more sound (where is the depth in the squad) the football is much better to watch (even Simpson's team had a few decent games) When Simpson left we definitely jumped out of the frying pan but now maybe we have one foot in the fire.
