Can anyone remember the last Town player to be awarded a testimonial ? Also who has been awarded a testimonial throughout the history of S.T.F.C ?

Didn't Starkey have one? Terrible choice I recall.
Eagle Edwards missed out I think by a year or so maybe?

The last testimonial for a person who was still playing at the club was McNallys v Arsenal circa 88/89, there was Wardles a couple of years previous to that, also benefit matches for Starkey,Musgrove and Rowley in recent years too

Griffin was a few months short before he was sacked in 87, still is extremley bitter with the club over the matter, massive shame because he was one of my first heroes.

I thought he was offered one, but turned it down because of his sacking It is a shame that he still does not want anything to do with the club, because he was a hero, and a very important player during our best times

If it's 10 years service why didn't Griff get one in 1985. He joined in 1975 didn't he?

Arthur Rowley had 2 testimonials, the first in 1965 and the second 30 years later.
The '10 year rule' didn't apply in Arthur's case as he joined the club in 1958.
I also have a programme from Tommy Seymour's testimonial in 1964 which states 'for 25 years loyal service'.
Then I have one for Bob Wardle's game v. Liverpool in 1986, Bob was a Town player for 6 years.
I guess there is not a firm rule and a club can grant a testimonial at any time to a deserving case.

I remember one for Arthur in the mid 90's but not sure who it was against Wolves, I believe. I was there. I think it was to pay for an operation for the great man.

Did Colin Griffin not qualify for one? Colin Griffin. Pure quality. I'll let you into a secret now. I sponsored the match against Barnet. (That's not the secret. ) Aided by Blum, I tried to entice Colin to the match as my guest. I made it clear, it was nothing to do with Shrewsbury, it was just some supporters who wanted to entertain him and his wife. It looked promising at one stage, but in the end he wouldn't come. This might be of interest to some. Colin's in here of course. www.where-are-they-now.co.uk/shrewsbury-town/

A long time ago, i can faintly remember going down the Meadow to watch a special match, testimonial, whatever, and being excited cos Stanley Matthews was going to make an appearance. We all got in, and just before kick off the tannoy bursts into life to tell us, due to unforseen circumstances S.M. is unable to play. What a friggin rip off, i was well p**sed off. Dad seemed a bit more chilled about it, i think he was of the opinion that it was never going to happen in the first place. Come to think of it, years ago the Town directors etc. always made decisions somewhere along the line, that were guaranteed to p**s the fans off, bigstyle. Or is it my memory playing tricks again.

How long was Tommy Seymour at the club??? He was still at Salop in the 70s, must rank with Starkey in long service to the club.

Tommy Seymour was , i believe, the grandfather of John Phillips, the ex town keeper who went on to play for Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Don't think he got the credit he deserved. Shame he won't come back - the fans respect him even if the club didn't. Surely a player who deserves a flag. BTW did Pete Dolby get a testimonial?

Page 17. Smashing book by the way. Anyway, Tommy Seymour. "If ever there is a Salop legend then this must be the man. Tommy was captain of Oldham, and an ever present for two seasons before joining Town on June 12th, 1936. Whilst with the Latics he had been leading goalscorer for Millwall one Christmas having netted three own goals in two matches. Tommy now became a regular feature on team groups for 40 years. The jobs changed. but full back, trainer, talent spotter, and Fizzio, were all taken in their stride. Arthur Rowley said Tommy was the finest judge of a footballer he ever met, and Tommy's verdict could arrive literally in minutes. He also painted and repaired the Gay Meadow during the close season.

That was the Rowley 1965 game, as far as I can remember several of the advertised big names didn't show up - including Arthur's brother Jack.

Jimmy Mac said that Tommy Seymour was the wisest man he ever met in football and that players used to queue up at the treatment room just for the opportunity to talk to him.

Remember the Aston Villa game, think Merson and El-Hadji something (cant remember his full name) played for them and Lowe scored a hat trick for us?
Players staying more than 5 years at a League 2 club never mind 10 seems to be rare these days, so I cant see a testimonial involving STFC happening any time soon.
