The Shropshire Star in its usual sensationalist rubbish reporting style, claims that 'fighting broke out between groups of rival fans' last night - that's news to me www.shropshirestar.com/news/2010/11/24/arrests-made-at-shrewsbury-v-hereford-match/Once again, more evidence why I will not buy this paper. Perhaps as many people as possible should comment on their story and demand apologies - fed up of made up stories having a go at us football fans

The information was supplied by the police. This is on their website:
Police were called to restore order at the Shrewsbury versus Hereford match last night when more than 100 people were involved in disturbances.
Several people were arrested for various offences, including assault on police and club stewards as well as public order matters.
Fighting broke out between groups of rival fans during the first half. Chief Inspector Martin Whitelegg said the club was forced to call for police support when the trouble broke out.
He said: "Prior to the fixture, we were not requested by the club to provide policing at the ground as they have their own stewards. However, we did have a small number of officers on duty to deal with any ancillary disorder in the town.
"But due to significant disorder breaking out in the ground during the match which the stewards were unable to manage on their own, the club's safety officer requested assistance from the police and we attended to restore order."
Chief Inspector Whitelegg said about 25 officers went to the ground. "We had to mobilise force reserves to deal with the situation. Several stewards and police officers received minor injuries and five people from both the Shrewsbury and Hereford areas were arrested."
He added that the police and club would hold talks concerning future stewarding of matches and that video footage would be studied to identify others involved in the disorder.
"We will be conducting investigations into what happened and to identify the offenders. This will include examination of CCTV to trace the offenders who will be dealt with for offences of affray and public order."
Perhaps you should think before you post...

So you are saying that Shrewsbury and Hereford fans were actually fighting against each other in the ground??

There seems to be a lot of people agreeing on the Shrops Star story that there was no fighting between rival fans inside the stadium. I was in the East Stand so not the closest to the 'action' but this is consistent with my memories from last night.
Did anyone see otherwise?

Never saw any punches thrown or any tangles of that nature. All a saw was vandilism by Hereford fans by taking clip art lion which i don't care for much as well as the Elton John advert. Handbags at the end of the day and certainly not west ham vs millwall.

I'm saying the paper has simply reported what it has been told by the agency which dealt with the problem, ie the police. I never saw any Shrews fans fighting inside the ground either, but that is the police's official record of what happened, which is what the paper has reported. Any inaccuracy is the fault of the police, not the reporter

The police are not saying that there was fighting between fans in that statement, although people from both sides were arrested it seems, there was NO fighting between fans in the ground (by that i mean when two fans got close enough to exchange blows)
How the Shropshire star have turned that quote into sets of fans fighting is the cause of the annoyance for town fans... at no point was there any fighting between rival fans.

I think STFCfan87 made a fair point on information he had, both from the Star and from being there. Not everyone bothers to go on the Police website. I was in the West stand and i could or did not see any actual fighting between fans. A lot of posturing and threatening behaviour, yes, but no actual fights. The area involved, the trouble spot, is between our fans and the visiting fans, the corner between West and North stands. It is obvious that this area has, ( Port Vale, Hereford.) is, and will continue to be a cause for concern. With no physical segregation those who want to cause trouble can as both sets of fans are too close to each other. Chesterfield is built in a similar style and those who went a few weeks ago witnessed a carbon copy of last nights troubles. Why people moan about the gate should now realise why it was introduced. Its not perfect in its application, but i would rather be safe than sorry. And why the criticism of the stewards. It appears to me that problems in Society are always blamed on some one else. We live in a blameless Society, "its never my fault" mindset. The problem rests, full stop, with mindless morons who cannot go to a sporting event without causing trouble and actively enjoy the so called kudos this brings. Blame the idiots, not the stewards, whose job is to "steward" not to stop people punching each others lights out. We do have problems down the ground, and need to deal with these problems first, before we concern ourselves with how we can improve the look of the concourses.

Some of the responses on that website sound outlandishly stupid.
I think the report is 95% accurate, yet once again the rose tinted "how dare you" brigade are up in arms at the nasty Police, Stewards or Sloppy Star....basically anybody who sees STFC fans as anything less than perfect.
There were many idiots in Block 19 last night, to deny all and simply point the finger at "poor" reporting and Hereford United is indeed pathetic.

Did someone not mention that some Town fans were escorted out of the stand at the behest of the head steward? Maybe it were them Town fans that the police are referring to, maybe one or two were arrested from that?

I'm not saying that there were not idiots on our side - in fact I've said there are a number of idiots in block 19 who for some reason have to stand up in front of the block for long periods -in other threads.
However the wording of this report suggests that the two groups of fans were actively fighting with each other inside the ground - this was not the case that I saw, as the stewards prevented it.

I don't know what they are on about, not one fight broke out between rival supporters! Not one! The main aspect of trouble was Herefords fans reaction to the first goal we scored and that set the trend for the night as they played up all night. Some town fans vented there frustrations at seeing there stadium being ripped apart along with the clip art lion flag. There was scuffles between Hereford fans with stewards and police but there sure as wasn't any with Town fans and that wraps it up. Yes there was some banter and winding up by town fans but that happens at every football match i have ever been to following Shrewsbury Town in over 20 odd years of which we have been ont he recieving end as well as dishing it out. I remember 3 years ago when they played here and they where larging it on the way to there promotion, the boot was on the other foot tonight and they reacted by what they did.

Stutty it was me that brought up the case of the Blue Coat man,
For a recap
at half time he came to block to 17 (in front of us) and several people took it upon them selves to make it clear that he was doing a rubbish job (a few off here, another whos one of the clubs sponcer, and myself from half way up the block!)
He then scuttled off back to the North stand... then when it all got heated and the police came in, he took one female officer (i think) and walked her down the west stand to blocks 18 and 17 and pointed out the same people who had had a go at him... I dont think Jamo will mind be he was one of them and I saw him get taken downstairs for a chat - Jamo would love to here what went on... He then picked out another in block 17, and gave me a hard state (I slunk into my chair to avoid being pulled up!)
My point was he was not picking out people who had been down the front goading the away fans he was picking out people who had took the time to let him know what they though about the job he had done first half.... to me that was 1) Petty, 2) a waste of resources as there was a mini riot occering in the north stand at the time 3) Vindictive 4) Pointless considering that he precided over a first half where his lax attitude to calling for the police ment that STFC have to deal with some damage to the stadium, and he got lucky that there was not a more serious situation arrising as the fans seemed reluctant to do anything more than taunt...
I dont know if this is the guy that makes the calls, bue he was the target of the fans ire last night, and seemed to running the show down the North stand end...

Obviously the Police have their own agenda and I get the impression there's no love lost between Club and West Mercia.
However I, like many others, didn't see rival fans fighting in or outside the ground.

When your poor work in the first half has caused home fans to be riled up by having to watch as away fans run amock and break things in the stadium hes got to expect some grief IMO... no different to people having ago at players when they dont perform. Not

Not maybe fair comment, but again i wonder about the wisdom of giving our players abuse too, it isnt helpful. its like beeping at somebody who has stalled their car in front of you, they know the situation they are in and expressing your ange will only exacerbate the situation. but i was on the other side of the stadium and obviously cant comment on his behaviour, just peoples decision to make his job even more difficult by putting more on his plate, one that is already overflowing with things to deal with. maybe he thought he was nipping it in the bud by confronting what he thought was more potential trouble. just out of interest, how did he make things worse in the first half? from where i sat, the stewards were confronted by 2 sets of fans running toward each other, and they kept them apart. not sure you can blame the steward for other peoples lack of self control.

There was no fighting inside the ground between sets of fans.
There was however scuffles between police/stewards and hereford 'fans' in the away end. Whether this could be constituted fighting is dubious.

Just a thought and as usual in hindsight etc etc..........
Would it not have been wiser to have located the control room in the south stand behind the home support thus allowing any observer within the control room an unobstructed view of the supporters in the north stand (and of course any in block 18 or 19), any cameras or viewing aids would then be able to focus on clear facial images of potential trouble makers etc, as it is the viewers and persons in charge in the control room are looking over the heads of the away support with any offenders more than likely having their backs to any camera etc.
