a real shame if the golf course does go, it was originally shrewsbury golf course (before they relocated to condover).
meole really does offer the residents of the town (and the surrounding area) an opportunity to literally just turn up and play for a reasonably small fee, basically a chance to see if you like golf.
it is also a suitable section of ''greenlands'' on the edge of our ever expanding town so alot of wildlife would suffer
i cannot see it being relocated (to gains park etc), the future of golf now does not lie in members golf clubs, many golfers are nomads and are happy to source a deal where they fancy a game (this is due to the expansion of the last 30+ years of new golf clubs - shropshire in the last 15 years has nearly doubled its courses !) so offers / vouchers / ebay etc are almost available at every golf club.
good luck meole golf course we need you to stay where you are !

In my opinion it would amount to an act of utter betrayal to the residents of this town whether they are golfers or not. To have such a beautiful, accessible open space within easy reach of all residents for them to enjoy sport, wildlife, walks alongside the Rea Brook or just the simple pleasure of a green area within an urban landscape is a pleasure and privillage and not something that should be given up for political gain. I urge all residents of the town to make their thoughts known to the elected representatives. Wholeheartedly agree with every word. I am to golf what Tiger Woods is to monogamy but I played a round there with a mate the other weekend and think it would be an utter travesty if such a beautiful and enjoyable public space were sold off for housing.

In agreement with many of the points on here. It's hardly surprising that our Tory council want to sell off an area of public space given their ideology of anything publically owned being "wrong" and they're using every trick in the book like mucking around with the prices and poor maintenance to undermine it. As other posters have noted, the golf course has been in the firing line for some time, but the sell-off is by no means inevitable. Remember the mass campaigns that sprung up over the threatened local school closures a couple of years ago and forced the council into retreat? The threatened golf course sell off is just another facet in the Con-Dems cuts agenda. We should look to build a local grassroots campaign to save our golf course, and tie it in with opposition to all cuts to jobs and public services to stop this cut simply being "moved around"... to defeat the argument of "golfcourse vs care home" as another poster has correctly pointed out. Despite not being a golfer, I passionately believe the course should be preserved and enhanced for local people to enjoy. I'll be at the meeting on Monday night and would be interested in meeting up with other posters on here to see if we can help take things forward (message me!)

Edited highlights of the meeting
- 6,500 houses need to be built in Shrewsbury over the next 20 years within the bypass boundaries
- There is room identified for 30,000 houses to be built so it is not crucial the golf course site is used for housing reasons alone
- The golf course is currently designated as green belt which means that a like for like facility would need to be provided if it were used
Now on to what are perhaps more to the point issues
- most of the 30,000 plots are on land not owned by the council so they would derive little benefit for merely dealing with the planning application and sale of land by private individuals or enterprise
- If the Council need £18m to balance the books the course could be in danger (heated debate followed re the Councils openness about this)
Further heated discussions ensued about the councils pricing policy and general management of the course. When pressed the council officer agreed that the course will recover 95% of its costs this year in fees (at which stage the golf pro stepped in pointing out that in previous years it has recovered 112% of its costs prior to fee hikes)
The golfers there poured scorn on the ability to be able to provide a like for like facility of the same standard and locally enough for many people to be able to walk to (which many especially junior golfers do).
Local walkers, dog walkers and naturists also raised their concerns about the possible loss of the facility.
A lively opening skermish which will no doubt get livelier.

If someone could start a petition off, I'll sign there is already a petition as several councillors pointed out at the meeting by far the best option is to write a letter

Local walkers, dog walkers and naturists also raised their concerns about the possible loss of the facility. Did they have any clothes on or were they actually naturalists?

If it gets sold off and house's built on it. I'll give it 10 years untill the locals are moaning about the Ground being to close and the problems it causes.
