Shrewsbury were accused of trying to line their pockets with their opposition to Southampton reducing the ticket prices for their forthcoming FA Cup game. However the FA backed the Saints stance, and we will all benefit from the cheaper rates. I cannot understand your clubs stance, this move will practically ensure a big crowd. Maybe the biggest of the round. Southampton do this on one or two occasions every season to encourage the younger ones to go to live games, and it's proved a success. www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/8480299.Shrews_tamed_in_ticket_price_row/?ref=rss

This actually isn't suprising given our clubs stance on reducing admission prices for less attractive games.
There are arguments for, and arguments against, but Town have often refused consider lower rates for less attractive games.
They could actually learn something here, though I doubt they will

Good on The Saints and good on the FA shame our club only think of lining there pockets and don't think of us fans ......... Not as if were spending the money we've got wisely / successfully or we wouldn't still be in league two

Glad Southampton won this fight £15 is a great price for such a game and will encourage more fans to go. I don't think 'price-quantity elasticity' has been a term considered by STFC on this one.

The game is not scheduled for live TV... SATURDAY 3PM KICK OFF...
All the more reason for a sensible pricing policy!
ANYHOW... get yourselves down here for a good day
we are a friendly lot... unless your a skate (Pompey)

so much for all the times town have forced " the price reduction has to be agreed by both clubs"
i wonder if they will use that in round 2 when we are drawn at home to fc united ;-)

Good to see a sensible policy for this one.
I accept the demand for tickets is not elastic (i.e. a 10% price production is unlikely to result in an increase in attendance >= 10%) but a bit of goodwill every now and then can go a long way.

But let's say for instance on this occasion the actual reduction is on average 50% - will it result in the attendance/ receipts being 50% higher than usual? I suspect the answer is no.

Let's no overreact to this SSS.
Our prices are still lower than a significant number of teams in this division and certainly those above. We have a very competative season ticket pricing strategy and there are some good offers for families attending the GM too.
I appreciate there has been a significant change in strategy since the move from the old Meadow but putting it all in perspective is an argument that needs to be balanced both ways.

It does need to be balanced both ways, but the bottom line on this one is that this is certainly not an attractive fixture for a southampton fan, and not much of one for us.
5 years ago I would have understood.

another way of looking at it is, the more you reduce the prices, the more home fans there will be, the better that is for the Saints in terms of generating home atmosphere, more intimidating for little League 2 side unused to playing before big gates, and gives home side even better chance of a win. With prize money for getting into next round, another games gate receipts and ultimately a chance of Man U at Old Trafford payday, I can fully understand the club's position.

I'm surprised at peoples surprise at STFC not wanting reduced prices! As Ant has said, the move to reduce the prices is likely to lose STFC money - they can be accused of 'wanting to line their pockets' all day long but they are a business and are conducting themselves correctly by wanting to maximise income.
How STFC makes money in these ways, whether its maximising receipts from an away FA cup game or hosting a concert, it all converts into the players we can sign, the home ticket rates that are charged so people should be glad a hard-nosed approach is often taken.

Glad a decent price has been "agreed".
I honestly would not have taken the offer for £25 notes ish as with family involved it would have been very expensive all told.
I think people need to look at this from the Clubs angle as well, we are unlikely to progress further and have the chance to make a bit of revenue for the pleasure. Yes it will hit fans, but in balance it probably is a price worth paying to the Club.

As the FA are so concerned about ticket prices for our FA Cup game maybe they could ask the football League to investigate why a 3rd division club are charging between £25-£27 a match for adults.
I'll be interested to know if Southampton reduce their ticket prices for the visit of Dagenham & Redbridge or Rochdale.
Personally I think the Club are perfectly entitled to ask for full price, it's the FA Cup, not the JPT. The Club will have to budget for the trip and I imagine an overnight stay. Even though we're playing a mid-table 3rd division outfit I expect, on current away form, to lose, so why not try and make it worth our while?
It'll be interesting to see if the ticketing policy will encourage more Salopians to travel. I'm still not going even if it is a day out at a nice stadium (which I watched being built as it happens) and the opposition were once Premiers****. It's outside my new "only go to away games if they're within 2 hours" policy.

I disagree Dave, this is the most interested I've been in a Salop away fixture for a while. It's nice to watch at a new stadium where we haven't seen Salop before.

i think in cases where there is a disagreement both clubs should be allowed to set the prices for their own fans
it really would shame a few clubs now and then

Quite frankly I don't think either club comes out of this fiasco with much credit:-
Shrewsbury - For not agreeing to the price reduction in the first place (which they were quite entitled to).
Southampton - For the unprofessional way in which they announced this. Coming out with statements like '..over ambitious move designed only to line their pockets' and '..bearing in mind the opposition' is indicative of a touch of arrogance. Surely it would suffice just to announce the reduction of ticket prices without having to rub our noses in it.
The atmosphere in the board room at St Marys come lunch time on the 6th Nov will be interesting.
