Great news.
Can only raise the profile of the club, what with the news last week about the Euro under 21 champs and now this things off the field are going very well at present.Just need to sort out the away form on it and we'll all be happy as pigs in muck.
All those moaning about it being Elton John, look at it in a positive way,if it is a success then we may get other bands/singers to perform at the Meadow in the future.Just because he isn't your cup of tea don't knock it as it is valuable revenue for the club we all support.

Fair play to the club for this.
Not my cup of tea and wont be attending but for a division 4 club to get someone of his profile is a good coup and anything that brings in extra cash AND raises the profile of the club is a good thing.
Lets hope that this can lead to more things at the club and perhaps a bit more diverse too. Im not expecting the next Ozzfest to be moved to the Meadow but it would be nice if a few things aimed at a different crowd could be put on.
Of course I wait for the hundreds of letters complaining from SARA warning us about maurading music fans rampaging through Sutton Farm

For all those that are mocking this, do yourself a favour and grow up, this is a fantastic coup for the club and if a success will bring in loads of dosh and loads of future events of this ilk Well done STFC

This is a tremendous bit of news. Not a great fan myself, but can see people coming from miles around to see him. That in itself will put Shrewsbury on the map, bigtime. Well done S.T.F.C. I wonder what they can do to top that. Exciting times ahead.

If they could get cheryl cole, Take That etc or some of the X Factor tour then I would be impressed and it would do the club more good than Elton John Where's the vision OTT ? Now Eltons booked it may well set a trend. Great for the club and brilliant for the Town. Everyone's a winner. All that's left to do is make sure it's a brilliant atmosphere. Just one thing Do season ticket holders get first shout on the tickets or will Ticketmaster manage to get hold of them first ?

Whilst I can understand why some folk might be a tad miffed its very good news for the club this. Maybe next time the club can let us know it's something away from the playing side though, might stop folk getting worked up over nowt...
But still, this is the very reason we moved grounds isn't it? Its extra revenue for the club, puts the club on the map but more than owt its the club bringing something to the much wider community....and that can only be a good thing. I'm sure there are plenty of folk who were against the move to the new stadium, plenty of folk who were indifferent, who didn't appreciate what it could bring to the town. Well this is a very clear indication of what good has come about from the move...not just for the town's football fans but for all (well, a fair few who like Elton John anyhows). Its going to win over a lot of people this I reckon. And you would hope that this could only be the start of many such concerts...
Well done the club I say...

Can't believe some of the negative comments on here. This is absolutely fantastic for STFC. Even if you don't like him this is one hell of a coup for the club.
If you don't like him then don't go - Simples!

Elton John eh. Whilst im sure its great for the club, very prestigious and all that, it really does just continue with the otherall shrewsbury theme of being a place for middle aged middle class folk.
Having said that, i guess it could all be part of a bigger plan, councillors and locals less likely to object to a concert by Sir Elton John (fits the required image template and most of them will be there in the posh seats) but would also set a president for future gigs (with bands that perhaps arnt so comfortable and fluffy) that the council would therefore find hard to refuse.

Was at Elton John concert at Worcestershire County Cricket ground in 2006. Although I would not say I was a very big fan of his, it was an absolutely fantastic concert and well worth the money. He has to be one of the best live acts doing the rounds at the present time.

Saw Elton John back in 1984 at the NEC, at the time I would not have gone out of my way to see him but went with my then girlfriend who was keen to go, and have to say he was brilliant.

I do hope Sir Elton is aware that the Greenhous Meadow isn't quite the floral retail experience the name suggests.
This boosts the profile of the GM as an entertainment venue and obviously anything that boosts revenue is to be welcomed but I'm not sure people are going to start seeing us as a bigger club because Elton John is playing a concert here.
I hope the club makes a decent amount of money and the venue is used regularly for a range of artists - including those that raise the decibel level a bit higher than 'Candle in the Wind'.

Breaking news. Next up, Roy "Chubby" Brown. As a gesture of goodwill, Sutton Residents Arsociation will be allocated front row seats.

Wouldn't have thought the profit would be too much, as these type of concerts tend to be organised by outside agencies who also have to make a profit from the event. For example at Weston park they just get a flat fee for hiring out the venue to the v festival, they don't get a direct income from ticket sales. Will be interesting if the club runs the bars and corporate side of things on the day or if an outside agency does it While the club probably won't make massive amounts it's a nice income when the ground isn't being used, and has the potential to promote the facilities at the ground to a wider audience

Not really but I have the feeling it'll be like one of the Wembley trips in that everyone assumes is a real money spinner but it turns out not to be. I think mattmw's post is probably on the money (pun not intended) ,as usual.

or some of the X Factor tour then I would be impressed Errm, Errm, where do I start.......................... The club needs to provide for the younger audiences as well as the old generation.

And need to start somewhere.
In answer to the income generation of the event I have no idea, but looking at the hospitality packages available (meals before in the Sovereign Suite etc etc) someone is hoping to make some serious money. Three levels starting at £250 + VAT per person. Fair play for the club in seizing the opportunity. These prices will certainly scare some people off, but there just might be enough takers. If the club set the prices at a lower level they could have been overwhelmed and need to disappoint people, for a lower profit.

This is just an example of making good use of the asset's it owns. Presumably they advertise themselves as a venue somewhere (e.g. via an agent). The younger generation is more than willing to travel to Birmingham, Wolverhampton or Manchester for a gig they like. You might notice that Shrewssbury has a fairly old population. There will be plenty of 50 plussers snapping up tickets for this gig.

Thats sounds seriously steep in my experience of 28 years of gig-going, the food would need to be Michel Roux standard to justify that price (ie. 2 michelin stars). Also would depend on seat allocation, and I wouldn't say that the seats outside the sovereign suite when watching a concert at one end of the ground are hardly what I would call 'prime' viewing.

Anyone who has seen Elton John live would realise just what a tremendous event the club are putting on. The earlier critics have clearly never attended one of his concerts. I am not really a fan but you cannot fault his concerts for sheer professionalism and entertainment.

What a fantastic coup for the football club.
Anyone criticising it should frankly hang their head in shame.
Ade has hit the nail on the head when he said could cause an almighty bun fight with the council / residents as it requires planning changes to allow it to happen.
I hope the club's detractors don't use it to throw stones and make it look like STFC are " doing a Tesco" and asking for permission after the event. That said STFC are canny enough to already have put out feelers towards the relevant parties.
The fact it is such a massive international star will make anyone protesting against it seem like an extreme killjoy, and it is exactly the right class / age profile of person attending the event that makes it far more likely to happen in Shrewsbury.
I doubt the council would bend over backwards to put on a Snoop Dog gig.
