Liverpool fans might enjoy knowing that on Margaret Thatcher's 85th birthday she'll be watching nothing but celebrating scousers and miners all day on TV.

Could'nt stand the woman. No doubt there will be plenty who will volunteer to dig the 6' deep hole when the time arrives. Mostly from the Mansfield/Notts area.

Tip top. I had no time for her but would never share in the death wishes on here. Unnecessary. Be far more constructive to try persuading people not to continue voting for her successors.

Would not have made any difference - the trapped miners were stuck down a gold and copper mine.

Sad and weird to see men wishing an old lady with alzheimers dead, whatever the hatred towards her policies when she was in power. For the Falklands, if only that, I salute her

For the Falklands, if only that, I salute her Except the war was unnecessary (like most wars). If the government hadn't created the perception that the UK was downgrading its interest in the South Atlantic, Argentina might not have been tempted to occupy the islands. Argentina was then ruled by a nasty military junta but it's unlikely it would have sought an armed conflict with Britain. A political mistake created the environment for the war and both sides paid a high price. I know it rallied domestic support around Thatcher (not mine, but wars tend to do that) so it was a defining moment for her. I don't think she came out of it well though.

For the Falklands, if only that, I salute her i also find it strange. send in our forces to preserve the supplies of oil that help keep our country and our economy moving and stop a mad man slaughtering his own people and trying to get hold of WMDs and you are a murdering , but send our forces in to preserve a few thousand penguins and a life times supply of haddock and you're a ****in hero anyway, rumour has it that she has had alzheimers for over 30 years, and quite frankly i believe them. in seriousness, i wouldnt wish alzheimers on anyone, not even her.

There's oil around the Falklands too. It's very hard to locate and extract but, if the oil price is high enough, it becomes viable. Could that have been a factor in 1982? If it was, why make it look to the world as though you were withdrawing from the region?

On the contrary, I'd argue that it was generally a very popular war with the general public and greatly improved Thatchers' standing and probably swung the 83 election for her. Argentina chose to escalate it from an argument over the Sovereignty of the Falklands to actually invading, maybe as you say they believed that Britain had lost interest and so wouldnt fight for territory so far away, but that was their gamble and they lost. Matrons comparison with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is a flawed one because defending your own territory is very different to invading another on very shaky (since proven untrue) beliefs about WMD. Also the casualty rates are incomparable - virtually no civilian casualties in the Falklands, opposed to tens of thousands plus in Iraq/Afghanistan. Also the Falklands War lasted only 74 days and achieved a set objective, conflict in Iraq/Afghanistan has gone on for years and years with no real end in sight.

On the contrary, I'd argue that it was generally a very popular war with the general public and greatly improved Thatchers' standing and probably swung the 83 election for her. That's what I said - it rallied support for Thatcher and definitely swung the 83 result her way. My point was it shouldn't have been seen as a triumph. Argentina chose to escalate it from an argument over the Sovereignty of the Falklands to actually invading, maybe as you say they believed that Britain had lost interest and so wouldnt fight for territory so far away, but that was their gamble and they lost.Britain withdrew HMS Endurance from the region, leaving no overt naval presence. Yes Argentina escalated it by invading, but they had a nasty military government then. If ever an invasion was going to happen, that was the time - political misjudgment by our government. Britain then escalated the conflict into a war by invading right back. It might not have been necessary if we hadn't signalled an intention to withdraw from the region. That was a mistake if we really wanted to keep the Falklands. There could be a timely lesson in that for next week's cuts announcements. Some foreign powers might be interested to see where we scale back our interests. I'm not saying we shouldn't do that but only when the possible consequences (and how we would respond to those) have been properly considered - which this government hasn't yet had time to do.

What's the problem with this JT? ] Well the fact that over 300 hundred people turned up for a meeting to protest that we didn't want it should have been enough. The local sawmill which the developers claimed would supply the bark have withdrawn their support and won't supply them There are health concerns, which the councillors have ignored, it would be situated less than 100 metres from our Community College, there is a housing estate a similar distance away. Then we had the game of charades, where the councillors "called it in". Good idea, let's get the meeting away from the locals, hold it in a room which holds 40 and only give speakers from the objectors 20 minutes to outline their case. I can tell you, a lot of us are steaming here.

Regarding the Falklands issue it has long been a tool of the left in an attempt to balance our current predicament in the middle east, another case of "yeah but look what they did" politics.
Back to the point, the Argentinians feel very strongly about the issue of the Islands, indeed the UN stated Britain must talk over sovereignty in the 1960s.
We didn't, I can't justify invasion as war is never an answer but the Argentinians did try all other methods prior.
As for defending British soil, it was and never has been about oil...thats just another cheap Pab tactic. Yes the Islands are thousands of miles away (great book on the vulcan raids btw) but define how close an Island has to be to be British ?

Feel yr pain buddy, As a fellow South Shropshire observer, it seems to me the whole thing has been pushed thru in a very underhanded manner. Nice little place, Bishops Castle, the last thing it wants or needs is one of these slap bang ontop of a housing estate and the school. Shropshire council are operating like some sort of dictatorship. Well, what else can you expect from a Tory run council?
