you will find as you can see a divided opinion on mr simpson , if he gets you to wembley there will be no complaints if it goes pear shaped afterwards then opinions will change , either way hope he does well for you but not at our expence....

A strange time under Simpson really
He over a poor side and we saw no improvement you normally get when a new manager comes in, no honeymoon period and generally we limped along to safety
The next season he was given loads of money and tried to bring in a lot of experienced players to win promotion, some signings worked, some didnt. The start of the season we looked a brilliant free-flowing team with two memorable 7 nil victories. However our away record was terrible. Despite having a massive budget and being in a poor league with teams with points deductions we scraped into the play-offs and such is football had we won in the final then Im sure Simmo would be a hero, instead he is labelled a failure
Last season he lost some key players (eg Grant Holt & Ben Davies) and his replacements were inadequate. Every fan could tell you that the problem in our team was a lack of pace, width and creativity but Simpson never seemed to sort this - instead he just kept gambling on strikers.
Ive got no real axe to grind with Simpson, he seems a decent, genuine man but two things were his downfall in my opinion. One was embarrasing defeats to Blyth, Staines, Darlington & Grimsby which indicated that either he couldnt motivate his team or they couldnt face a battle. The other was his relationship with the fans and how he seemed to have a running battle with us in the media each week. For such a media savvy man as him I really couldnt believe it when he called his own fans diabolical
My biggest disapointment with him though was the style of football. I dont expect Barcelona type football but I expected attacking football focusing on width. Instead we got dull, direct football and a midfield full of defensive players
Good luck to him, although will be interesting to see if he goes in and says he has learnt lessons from Shrewsbury, just like he did with us rreferring to Preston (and he then went and made those same mistakes)

although towards the end of his time here, after xmas, i became quite vocal in my condemnation of him, i have never been pro or anti simpson as such.
we will all agree or disagree on various aspects of his tenure, but to me the worst thing about his time here was the last year / 18 months being the most dull, unexciting, uninspiring, clueless, pathetic and inept display by a shrewsbury team i can ever remember.
for the first time towards the end of last season, i was seriously questioning if i wanted to renew our season tickets or not.

I do a mixture of home and away games so I don't have a season ticket, but if I had I think I'd have been wondering the same.
The second half of last season is the first and only time I've ever stopped enjoying going to games.

Good luck Simpson
It's worth remembering that for all his faults, some things, such as the contracts fiasco were out of his control.

I've nothing against Paul. I continued to back him when others had turned. In the end though, he had his chance and I thought he ran out of ideas.

Good luck Simmo Hopefully you will get the full backing of the board this time Jonah for once forget your love affair with Simpson and be realistic. Simpson had in his first full season the full backing of the Board demonstrated by the amount of money he was given to build a promotion winning team. Unfortunately he failed in a league where 4 teams were deducted up to 30 points. He went for bust bringing in older players on expensive 2 year contracts when it was fairly clear they wouldn't last 2 years. He failed to use the resources already at the club, players who are now with teams in higher divisions.

About as much chance I'll change as there is of you and your buddy taking every opportunity to carry on the Simpson tradition of blaming everyone but the man himself for his failure.

Not often Victor Meldrew aka Hope gets my full backing but on this one he does.
I wish him well but he can't say he didn't have backing here and was up to the job.

Ed, I agree to an extent that its a bit rich to moan about the board as in his first full season he was given a massive budget but failed miserably
But there can be no doubts that what happened behind the scenes didnt help matters. It must be very difficult to plan when your budget is changed, contract negotiations halted and not to mention 'rumours' of other managers being pursued

There were many rumours around 12 months ago when RB left that relationships between the manager and the chairman were strained to say the least. Personally I believe that from the arrival of RB to the departure of Simpson, will in the future, be considered to be a dark time in the history of STFC.

Ed Im not arguing that in hindsight that season was a failure, a very expensive failure
What Im saying is that Roland kept changing the goalposts:
- When he came in Simpson admitted he would have to keep a tight budget - A few months later in the summer, Roland decides he wants promotion so gives him a massive budget for the season - In January it seems Roland has changed his mind, we are forced to sell Tierney and withdraw all contract negotiations. Our 'signings' are short term out of contract players (Chadwick, Riza, Ashiokodi)
Since then it has been mixed signals with one minute cutting our cloth and then making large bids for players (Benson, O'Flynn etc)
My point is how can you be a manager and plan when your budget is always being changed?
Im not saying that Paul Simpson failed because of these issues, he wasnt up to the job. However they certainly didnt help

If he gets the Stockport job I just hope he will re-sign the 'marvellous' players he has lumbered us with from last summer's transfer debacle.
You know want to take them to Stockport PS.
We have a great centre forward and wonderful left winger you could have Paul .... going quite cheap too I would hope.

Good luck Simmo Hopefully you will get the full backing of the board this time Quite laughable really. After the debacles at Rochdale and at home to Macc didn't the board stump up another six figure sum for Simmo to go and buy a striker in the transfer window? Wonder if he'll get that kind of 'support' at Stockport or anywhere alse in this league for that matter. Perhaps if he had a 'plan B' once O'Flynn knocked us back he may still be here to this day. However, given his 'plan B' signing after the Benson rejection perhaps not..... Folks I guess i'm being a bit flippant and I suppose the Cureton loan was where Simmo turned after failing to land O'Flynn. Going to Edgely Park at the end of Aug and will be interesting to see what kind of response our former manager will receive. Got a feeling he might not applaud us at FT there either .

"Mixed," I would imagine. Personally I won't boo or applaud him, but I imagine there might be quite a split between people doing both. Also, given that we all now know that Simpson listens carefully to the crowd and is very, very easily wound up by it, I can't help but think there's going to be a fair bit of "banter" flying in his direction for most of the match. What odds that it happens and he then makes reference to it in his post-match press conference.

Simpson
Positives: We played some excellent football for about half a season when we had the best players in League Two. Negatives (that have not been pointed out so far). He's a muppet. He's hopeless at transfers - for instance got conned into thinking that Benson was going to sign for us, when it was clearly just a ploy to destabilise the team a few matches before we had to play Daggers. Did anyone bother to listen to his drivel on Late Kick Off? He was clearly happier moaning on about transfers that didn't happen/Notts County's supposed cheating than worrying about his own game. Spent his time organising cringeworthy TV slots of players doing cooking instead of worrying about how to get three points from the team at the bottom of the entire football league. He'll suck all the confidence out of perfectly decent players.

Spot on Proud Salopian and Matron. If you put your two posts together you pretty much get my feelings completely.
As for Stockport i've got a feeling he may do ok there.
It depends on whether he's learnt from his Town mistakes or not. I suppose it's easier to reflect on what went wrong and what you'd do differently when you have the space to do that. I suppose the very best managers are those that reflect and learn quick. Maybe that comes with experience. Maybe though its something you've either got or you haven't.
In any occupation even if the most skilled of managers can't cope with pressure then they struggle. Their judgement is clouded because of their own stresses.
An old saying goes " don't put one ulcer people in two ulcer jobs"
A football manager in particular must be able to reflect and learn quickly under significant pressure.
I think Simmo has had enough time now to clear his head and reflect and learn from his Town experience. Stockport may well prove to be a defining moment in his football management career. If he does well he can put his time at the Town down as a learning experience. If he fails then football management is probably not right for him.
Simmo is a passionate, well meaning, principled kind of manager who's not without talent. If he can learn from his mistakes he may well do a good job at Stockport.

The thing that will be on his side is that the expectations of the Stockport fans will be a lot lower than ours were.
