Came past the one on A442 not too long after it had happened (it was going south and the road was closed - I was going northbound).
As a cyclist I went cold when I saw that a bike was involved - Just hope it isn't someone I know.
The A442 race track that is the dual carriageway round Telford isn't really a place for cyclists but he wasn't doing anything wrong in being there.
Very Sad

Not sure what had happened on the Ford road, but today at 9.30 the main part of it was closed due to police investigations. Apparently it happened at 10pm last night.
On a few times that I have cycled from ford to shrewsbury I've always used the pavement as I really don't feel safe on the road. Although technically I believe that this is illegal according to the highway code despite the fact that there maybe one pedestrian using the pavement but upwards of 50 cars using the road for that journey.

Yes, cycling on any pavement IS illegal. Cyclists should use the roads, however we all know that the roads have been allowed to become too dangerous for many people to feel safe on hence more people using pavements.

As a resident of Ford people do drive like absolute lunatics down the A442, especially through Ford where the speed limit is totally ignored.
Its very sad whats happened to the cyclists, but I'm not surprised.

it's a crazy rule.
Cycling on a road (particuarly a country one) is dangerous for the cyclist, as if they gets hit by a car, or falls of, they're likely to suffer a serious injury or die. It also slows down traffic, and might mean drivers pull out of the road and potentially into the way of oncoming cars.
Cyclists on pavements, surely can see pedestrians and either slow down or just stop until the coast is clear (i do).
I would not cycle on the Ford to Shrewsbury road full stop due to the fact there is no speed limit, and it being so busy and the fact so many bad drivers / boy racers use it - as it is there's been some sort of accident on that stretch for about 5 of the last 6 weeks, and i'm sure there will be many more of varying degrees before the summer ends

Cyclists on pavements, surely can see pedestrians and either slow down or just stop until the coast is clear (i do). As a pedestrian, I have stepped outside my front gate and almost been knocked over by a cyclist on the pavement. This is in town, where there are speed limits and street lights. If a cyclist is on the pavement at night, it probably means he hasn't got any lights ! Cycling on main roads is obviously very dangerous, and we don't know the details in these cases. There are careless drivers and careless cyclists out there. The inquest on a recent case a young man got a bike for Christmas and got knocked over cycling to Westbury on Boxing Day in bad weather wearing dark clothes I haven't ridden a bike for years, but if I did I would probably keep to daytime and fairly local

I'm not a fan of speed cameras, but I really do think Ford could do with one.

Having recently been cycling over in Spain, I think it about time similar laws are introduced over here. Over there as far as I understand it, any incident between a motor vehicle and a bicycle is automatically deemed to be the fault of the motor vehicle driver unless proved otherwise. Thus cycling along drivers give you a wide birth, stay behind on corners until they are safe to pass you and generally give you respect. The only bad incident I have had over there turned out to be a UK registered car.

Whilst this is terrible for everyone involved I have to say the cyclist would have been better off on the cyclepath that is set away from the A442 (Eastern Primary)
I have used the route quite a bit recently and wouldn't dare use a busy dual carraigeway.
Most Car drivers are good as gold and give you plenty of space.
Just down in London and some of the cyclists are just bad road users. Nearly got clobbered 4 times on the walk into work because they didn't follow the Road Laws (Signalling, Traffic Lights)

Its very sad whats happened to the cyclists, but I'm not surprised. Think you mean A458. In other news, related to my point - police are currently investigating an incident that occurred in ford at dinky's dinah on saturday night where a man is in a serious but stable condition after apparently a car drove off with someone on the bonnet! - think that demonstrates quite well that there are mainy lunatics that use that road! www.shropshirestar.com/news/2010/07/07/police-investigating-mans-car-fall-injuries/Scooter - isn't a cyclist riding at night without lights illegal too?

Very sad news.
I went down the EP about an hour or so after yesterday's incident and there must have been a dozen police cars still on scene and blocking off traffic entering 1 side of the carriageway so feared was a fatal motorbike crash as the vehicles parked up all seemed unscathed - was very surprised when radio report said a cyclist was involved, no idea why a cyclist would entertain going down there rather than use the cyclepath as der kaiser says
that is absolutely spot on BGS and drivers over there (at least wherever I've been riding) are far, far more tolerant of cyclists and walkers. The attitudes of drivers on UK roads is often apalling, I see it when cycling and driving. the CTC are trying to get similar laws into the UK but it has sod all chance of getting passed with toss pots like the Top Gear crew ranting on like they do at times

Most Car drivers are good as gold and give you plenty of space. I understand that the A442 rider was doing a long distance ride, possible Lands End - John O'Groats. A442 is a popular route along the way. As such he probably isn't aware just how dangerous that few miles of road is. Neither are the other half dozen riders I've seen on there in the last 48 hours, most local cyclists would never go on there these day especially with the ludicrous traffic lanes T&W council have introduced in an attempt to cut down on accidents................ Your bit about most car drivers being as good as gold and giving you loads of space - some do, but plenty more dont. Far too many have a death wish when they get behind a wheel these day. especially on the A442, I see it every day when driving the road

Grizzly,
There is a national Cycle Route right next to the A442 (EP).
I bumped into a Cyclist who was doing the same a few weeks ago and his map had all the cycle routes on it. They are well signposted as well.

Top bloke will be sadly missed, I first met him properly a few years ago when he approached me outside my old house up gains park asking if i wanted my windows cleaned, I also remember me and him blagging our way into the Chester Citys supporters bar one Sunday before Town played there. There is was also the bus to Hereford as mentioned above in the FA Cup replay. He turned up without a ticket but somehow managed to get in, making everyone laugh on the bus. Just the other week I was chatting to him at St Mary Bus Stop about GT coming back. I feel quite saddened to here this news.
RIP Robbo.

Robbo was a lovely man, such a character and was a joy at times to be in his company. Just can't think for the life of me why he was on that dangerous road at that time.
