i think Hereford fans were intially blamed, then someone came out and said it was local youths not attached to a football club (i think)

As fagin states, originally it was blamed on Hereford supporters returning to the train station. This of course made front page headlines.
A few days later it was reported that it had nothing to do with the Hereford fans, or indeed any football fans and was in fact local youths who had vandalised it.
Of course this wasn't headline news so was placed on the inside pages with no apology fror the wrongful accusations in the first place.
Me thinks an apology is due from both "Mr Anonymous" and the Sloppy Star.

my response, sent to star mail today Dear Sir, I would like to congratulate "Name and Adress Supplied" for what appears to be the most unmerited and factually incorrect attack on STFC I have read in a long time. The Shropshire Star reported clearly (although not in the headlines it gave the original story) that the situation with the tree of light was due to local youths and absolutely unrelated to football supporters. Over 400 Shrewsbury Town fans have already signed up to our new "Fans Charter" promoting good behaviour, one of the most progressive schemes in the country. "Name and Address supplied" will have undoubtedly seen the massive headlines recently as police praised football fans for their good behaviour at the derby with Telford. This is something the real fans of both clubs can be proud of. If "Name and address supplied" really does care about the behaviour of football fans then maybe they can help us by signing up to the fans charter on www.shrewsweb.com/redcard! "Name and address supplied" can be rest assured that the real fans of STFC who wear club colours and go to football matches dislike anti-social behaviour related to football more than they do, and that we are willing to do something about it, not just write what comes across as a petty, incorrect and unfair letter to the press. The inclusion of a random personal attack on Ian Jones merely highlights the motivation of the author, to badmouth STFC and anything related to it without any regard for facts of this case or an understanding of the wider issues. Yours sincerely Dave Matthias

how much are you going to donate? is it worth getting in touch with Chris and getting a Shroppy Star photographer down there? also, it might be good if a few town fans turned up in colours and show them we're not such a bad lot

Good idea fagin - I think £50 was the agreed amount - if anyone wants to contribute extra that would be grand.

Ant , no doubt you'll stress to those concerned, including the press, that this donation is in no way an "admission of guilt ", but a genuine donation by concerned fans of STFC.

Great Letter, Dave- and very appropriately written by the guy who started the Fans' Charter. We need to deal with this sort of thing right away as these sort of people stir up trouble and will drum up opposition to New Meadow at every turn. Well done, Dave for responding so promptly.

Excellent letter Dave, much appreciated. Ian, the bottom line is that silly people write whatever they want in the press but if those silly people pick on one of my mates it really does get to me you stick your neck out for STFC through SARA and general stuff, and people seem to pick on you because of it. Well I'm not having that buddy, cos we're in this together and if "name and address supplied" wants to have a pop at you or STFC or everyone then they're gonna have to come up with something better than that. I am tired of reading drivel and lies in the press about STFC, and if someone includes a mate in the insults well that is just going too far

It won't be sent to the Chronicle and I don't want it to be because last week and this week there has been a fairly complex situation regarding myself and the prospective conservative candidate that is being resolved via two letters this week It has been sent to the star and is only aimed for the star! but thanks for the compliment
