Surprise call ups for Robert Green and Jlloyed Samuel and Shaun Wright Phillips. With no owne i'm not surprised about the inclusion of Defoe and i think Alan thompson has been knocking on the door for some time now. What do the rest of you think about these five newcomers?

Englands best 3d team against Swedens reserve side in a meaningless waste of time.Sven knows his side and wont change it.They may as well play 11 Hoovers with extension cables on the pitch and give them a shirt.More cash fo nothing.

Alan thompson has deserved this for a long time - for such a poor Engalnd team (especialy on the left) to have left him out until now has just been stupid. OK he plays against poor teams in the SPL but he has been superb against everyone especially Rangers and in Europe But since i support Rangers i wish he would become crap overnight since we need as much help as possible ( even Celtics youngster are to good)

i think murphy and carragher both deserve a place in the squad. Carragher is better than both nevilles, he is an excellent tackler, can play all along the defense and also centre mid if you need him. the only thing that has let him down was hitting 500 arsenal fans with one coin.

Greeno deserves it, IMO he is Englands best keeper by a long way

I just can't wait for another insipid English performance. When was the last time we put in a decent performance for a friendly game? They just don't matter. Sven sees it as a chance to play 22 players and to give half of them the captains armband.

Nothing to do with you being a Norwich fan is it DRASfounder?
Stick Robinson or Kirkland in goal and keep them there I say.

Kirkland is no injury prone it is amazing! He doesn't play nearly enough to justify being England number 1, and if he was to take that spot then England should be ashamed. Thank god Wales have a great consistent keeper in Paul Jones

Have you seen Green play Ant?
He is the best keeper in England by far

No I haven't.
But how many times have you see him play against the top teams in the country?
I remember people raving about a young Nicky Weaver when playing for Man City in the first division not long ago.
Where is he now?

Kirkland for keeper. When he is fit he is absolubtely world class. I think his injuries could be related to Houllier - look how many injuries Liverpool have had over the last couple of seasons, it is remarkable.

Stop it, stop it right now or you'll be expelled to the youth board like that TOAO should be !!

better looking, that was a foregone conclusion. Carragher is superb in any defensive position and he times all tackles better than the nevilles. He seems to be one of those who plays both for himself and for his club, he is very passionate about liverpool and i'd love to see him in an England shirt. can you tell i'm a liverpool fan?

Agree with ant on this one, there is no way that a 1st division keeper can be classed as the ebst in the country when he hasn't even been tested by the best srtikers.
Robinson or Kirkland would be my choice for England no.1 and failing those choices I'd go for Nigel Martyn

Kirkland is injured again. Robinson is having a nighmare with leeds defense, looked all over the place against Brum.
Any young goalkeeper who is playing their football anywhere near the Premiership, who has kept 16 cleans sheets, conceded 32 goals and won yet another MOM against Stoke deserves a chance to impress in a pretty meaningless friendly.
Weaver, well where do you start? There was a loss of form, then there was his weight issue, then he had some off the field misdemeaners and he has been consistantly injured for the last season or so, hense the appearences of Peter Schmeicals son on the nech at City.

Well said Why not
Anyone who has seen Greeno regularly knows hes up to the job... And hes a model professional
He deserves at least a half against Sweden to show us all what he can do... especially as its only a meaningless friendly

Let's see how he does in a struggling Premiership side next season.
It's still Robinson for me.

Until that happens I don't think he should be considered IMO. Should Sven start looking to the lower divisions for other players for his England squad? Marlon Harewood has scored 22 goals this season for west Ham - should we give him a go in front of Rooney or Owen etc....?

Completely different. England have a big choice of premiership strikers young and old to choose from.
Goalkeeping however; there is:
James (we're all waiting for him to flip up when it matters)
Kirkland(always injured)
Robinson (Great talent, but decimated confidence after playing for Leeds)
Martyn (Come on he's approaching 38/39)
Wright (never looked completely convincing been injured for a large part of the season)
Walker (Less said about him the better, poor on crosses, not the best shots stopper etc...)
Stuart Taylor (Great young keeper at Arsenal-just ask Bob Wilson, and look at his performances when he's been given a chance. Wenger appears willing to do anything but give him regular first team football)
Thats the choice unless I've missed someone out. Not a great choice is it?! Three of them are in their "Prime" and still not very good. Two cant get first team football. One is always injured and the other is having a terrible time of it at Leeds.
Thus whats the harn in trying out a player who has been in blinding form for the better part of three seasons now, who is still relatively young and could be a regular part of England squads in the future)?

There's no harm in trying,
but to suggest that he's the best English goalkeeper in the land due to performances in the first division is silly.
England have struggled for years for a situation to their left wing problems but I don't see people saying first division left wingers are the best in the country.

TOAO, this place was perfectly fine without you........ As for the real debate, I'm convinced that you need to stick with the same keeper as much as possible - James or Kirkland clearly. Wales provide a good example. Paul Jones could never be described as the Premiership's top goalkeeper (or even in the top 20?!) but as an able player who has developed a relationship with his back 4, he has never let his country down and has been a superb servant. The game at home to Sweden seems a strange friendly to play. Friendlies are all about learning experiences and I wonder what England can learn from this.
