An interesting thread.
I don’t disagree with Downie’s sentiments but I can’t help but feel he is exaggerating a bit. ‘Most threads descending into personal abuse’? Utter nonsense.
It is clear that half the remarks are alluding to my recent contributions and for that I am apologetic. I felt obliged to defend my good friend Heavenlyshrew in the ‘Simmo’ thread and probably overstepped the mark. I will however make no apology for my posts in Blum’s topic where I simply queried details of the original post in a polite manner. I maintain that there was nothing written worthy of Loyalshrew’s snide response.
The fact that Downie is highlighting this issue also amuses me; especially as he has one of the most foul mouths on the entire messageboard.

Geoff, Please do not fill yourself with self importance, I was not reffering to any one in particular, If I want to have a go at you, I will do so, very openly, not in disguise..... As for my mouth, well tough.... If I want to abuse someone or insult them, I will be man enough to do it to there face, rather than behind a keyboard......

Whatever happened to the strict rules laid down a couple of months ago? They seemed to get forgotton pretty quick... Not forgotten at all Dan, just sat back and watched really for a while to see what would happen, with posters and mods a like, Going to have a chat with Ant & Pilch about it sooner rather than later. But the whole thing of the new rule was that there would be no "sat back and watch", but that a warning was immediately issued and then if ignored a suspension. This seemed to be followed in the days after it was announced but not since seemingly - and this thread is evidence of it. I agree with what's said above - there are now too many mods here and it makes consistency difficult if not impossible. You need one mod who's on here making the immediate decisions with a small team behind him of three or four chosen in a way that it gives most coverage through the day. Other boards do well enough without such an army.

Paul, An admirable stance but unfortunately I can recall several instances where you have hurled abuse at me from 'behind your keyboard'. Are you aware of this?

I'm still waiting for my offer of cash - I take it as per your other comments this will turn out to be another meaningless comment to leave your keyboard? Perhaps if you save your pocket money up you could give me a shout?

Who guards the guards ? Can I be a Moderator please ? I offer the neutral perspective and all my opinions just always happen to be right ! Is ' Downie ' an Angram for ' constant and utter drivel ' ?

Other boards do well enough without such an army. I do still remove stuff mostly posted by guests I might add, too many mod's? not sure. If people have problems with someones thread/post then as mentioned in the rules they should make mod's aware of it, via a pm, rather than retorting and quoting the post and adding to the argument, mind you if this board got back to what it once was, the club wouldn't have much to laugh at.

Whenever anything is edited the mods get a load of grief.
When not much is edited the mods get a load of grief.
Even this thread has descended into more heated " discussion" between some of the usual suspects. This is not a kindergarten, it is a public messageboard.
I do think we need an off topic board, and if it is not about football it gets moved / deleted.
I also agree the way some people post with insults / derogatory remarks is tiresome and boring, as is the inane repetition of right wing semi-fascist rubbish.

Variety is the spice of life. I don't read the political stuff, but that's my choice. I'd hate a o/t board. It would make it as boring as some of the other clubs. There are clearly guests who are here to stir, so a guests sub board would probably sift some of the rubbish out, or move it to one side.

The British National Party has the right to a thread on here, as does the Labour Party, The Green Party and any other legitimate political party.

one of our fellow posters could seek a landmark court decision with ramifications for fellow b+a posters in terms of "abuse" handed out. I'll be sure to keep you all updated

This is still a tricky issue and I'm not sure we will ever find a 100% solution.
I think the overall problem is that the minority who do cause/ are involved in the constant bickering just do not care enough about the board and how their posts will be thought of by others.
For some I honestly believe this comes from a lack of intelligence, for others it's because they will say things from behind a computer screen they would not dare say to someone in person and for some they are purely looking to cause trouble.
The guest option is also a problem. Don't get me wrong, there are a LOT of excellent guest contributions on this board, however it also gives an opportunity for
- a banned member to carry on posting from behind a guest name, knowing that they can get a non-static IP address to keep re-connecting and getting past any ban filter
- a member to antagnoise others by posting crude remarks from behind a guest login.
Another suggestion is that there are too many mods - I agree.
How do we take this forward? I think the suggestion to have one lead moderator with a smaller team to support (all who have the power to ban) is the right move.
It will make it easier for the team to follow one set of instructions, will allow easier communication between the moderators, and will also make it easier for members to know who exactly who they should make a complaint or suggestion to.

Well said i suppose
The amount of mods on here is unbelievable
You possibly only need 3 or 4 mods online at one time
About the guest option why can't you change it so guests can't post just like bulls banter
just a suggestion

Some of the posters I have met in person from on here aren't always like their on-line persona, which I find a bit weird if I'm honest. Some of the more irritating/obnoxious posters have been excused by people saying 'they're nice guys when you meet them'. It's more likely that they are really like their on-line personas, where they can let their true characters show from behind the supposed safety of a keyboard. What you get in person is a facade. Probably true. Like I said weird.
