Sorry to return to this hoary old subject but with recent developments it has to. Can I start by saying that I was against the move from the start. Why? Cos I love the "Old Girl",with all the history attached to it and the fact that I loved a pre-match drink amongst friends down "the strip". I'm afraid to say that , whilst appreciating arguments for a new stadium, its probably going to be a "no go" for quite some time. It doesn't matter which political party is in power, these self-effacing local politicians are only interested in safe-guarding their extra income by way of their allowances to give 2 flying f*cks about what really matters. They boast about dragging Shrewsbury into the 21st century, they'd best get past the 20th first!! In my opinion, given the local situation, and as previously stated ,not wanting to leave our present address, is play this Council at it's own game. What's that you may ask? Get the people on board that really matter in the Borough. Just ask Morrisses, Furrows, Shropshire Homes etc,etc , They seemto be able to do want they want. Invite them to invest in re-developing the Meadow ,cost about 4 million, and we could name the stadium after them. Something like "the New -we can do as we like ,cos we own most of the town and we know which palms to grease, Meadow" Over to you, guys.

Yes let's stay put. When the licencing authorities close the terraces we can all watch from the stand and they tell me that you can eventually find enjoyment in any standard of football - even the Dr Martens league.

We will be staying put untill the New meadow is built, and it will be built i'm sure of that, but when is a different matter At least we have that luxury, unlike some teams who have been turfed out, we are solvent! we don't have to answer to the local council either So as ignorant as the conservative councillors are to Shrewsbury Town's efforts to re-locate we will in the end WIN because unlike them we have a future [shadow=red,left,300]Come on you Blues......ah[/shadow]

Where do you get the money to make susbstantial re-developments to the Meadow from?
It's going to take millions just to upgrade the current ground - never mind build new stands etc - not to mention the obvious lack of space on the current site.

Ant, read my original thread . The money can come from within. Lack of space had nothing to do with it until Hillsborough . If you want me to expand on ways of getting more than one entrance into the ground please say so.

Nice idea duncowshrew as much as I like the idea of ignoring SABC the redevelopment of the Gay Meadow is a no go. Due to the site the capacity at the Meadow is never going to be more than 8000, and with all seater it would probably be restricted to 6000. I know a lad who works for a development company and he thinks it would cost a minimum of £15 million to redevelop the Meadow and even then it wouldn't be as good as the New Meadow is supposed to be- I doubt all the companies you mentioned could find that kind of money anyway. Much as I love the current ground it is starting to get a bit embarrassing due to the lack of facilities and the constant flooding.

If it is gong to cost as much money to redevelop the Gay Meadow as it is to build a new stadium then there only is one option. If there has been an offer of £10 million for the Gay Meadow then we should take it. Does anybody know who has made this offer and if it is genuine? It only came to light after the council meeting and just before Christmas.
If someone has put in this bid, where do they stand with regards to planning permission for whatever they want to do and the covenant?

In a perfect World we'd stay at Gay Meadow, re-develop it, build a new road acessing it and everyone would be happy. But it can't happen.

I was wandering could the club not buy the land and build the stadium for £10,000,000??? Would we not be due for a few million quids worth football grants and ground development b******s?
Then to be honest I'd love it if an eyesaw was built on Gay Meadow. Just to spite all those flipers.
And surely if we did stay at Gay Meadow as well as risking flooding could we not also possibly suffer from subsidance problems, what with the river there?

Is there no other Shropshire town that would appreciate a football stadium on there doorstep? What about Wem, Ludlow or Bridgnorth?

Stutty - www.smartshrewsbury.info will be going live quite soon - Lets see how smug these councillors are when the town of Shrewsbury is shown up for what it really is. Hopefully i can get it in the top 10 for searches on Shrewsbury. ;D

Outsider - You cheeky gimp, born and bred Shrewsbury mate!
Due to the cattle markets severe state of disrepair and no life there whenever i drive past it, i wondered if it had finally closed down.
Instead of just presuming this, i asked, as its always best to check the FACTS first -dont you think?

Ludlow ( tourist town, top class restaurants, expensive housing etc) has a purpose-built new football ground on the edge of town next to the leisure centre (Town played there pre-season). I think Ludlow Town FC sold their old ground for housing. Can't remember much opposition to the new ground locally there.

I'd love us to get a new ground but sadly after years of talk and very little action the dream of a new stadium seems just as far away as it was 5 years ago.Lets just accept that SABC do not want a football club and would gladly see it go under.

According to the club directors, the New Meadow WILL happen, with OR without the help of SABC. All that will be affected will be the time scale, i.e. another 6 month delay. The zombies who keep writing to the local papers, seem to forget that planning permission has already been granted, so the only thing left open to discussion, is finance, NOT location. With regard to the comment about redeveloping Gay Meadow, have ypu not been listening fot the last few years, or are you SARA in disguise.

Exkeeper-- no I'm not sara in disguise and yes I've listened and read everything for years. Am likely to carry on listening for a few more years at this rate!!! My original point was that modern isn't always best. I've been to some "lovely" new grounds over the years with the Shrews, Walsall,Rushden,Chester etc,etc and they had as much atmosphere as a mortician's slab!! New grounds don't always bring success either, just ask derby or Huddersfield supporters. As someone said previously, grants etc could make up most of the money required, and exactly how many games do we lose to flooding anyway? Not that many over the years. No , I say keep the Meadow and there's an awful lot more say the same although not on these pages.

Which again brings us to the original points 1) Who pays for it? 2) Where's the space? 3) Where does the extra access come from?

Ant--- I'll take your word for it regarding the grants. So recruit wealthier directors, easier said than done I know, but Jack Haywards out of a job. You are obviously stuck with the site as it is but when I was a young 'un and lived in Monkmoor, I used to walk down Tankerville St, along Castle Walk, cut along a dirttrack and come behind the Station End. No doubt you're going to tell me that this has now been designated as a Druid burial site and that a proper access can't be constructed. It was just a thought.

Yes I know the path, under the viaducts by Wakeman fields. So say that is developed into a path wide enough for hundreds of people to use coming out of the football - what about additional access for cars? I'm sure there's some detailed reports/ info on the net as to why re-developing GM is a no-go, maybe someone else has a link for them?

Ant--thanks for that. I was under the impression that the ground had had its capacity cut due to the fact that there was only one entrance/exit to the ground and the concerns re an emergency breaking out. If the "back passage" was a goer then maybe a re-think could take place. As far as the car access goes, no answers there I'm afraid but with all the local street parking and the car park in the Foregate, do we really need any more?

As for the car access, there is an access road for british rail that runs from Underdale road right to the bridge arches, all it would take is a couple of hundred meters additional surfacing to link up with the Gay Meadow car park.
I walked it today just to check it out and its definatley viable - The only problem would be flooding, but i would say that if the access road was flooded the ground would be too so it wouldnt really be relevant.

NO grants would be available should the club wish to re-develop Gay Meadow. Not strictly true there Ant, but any such grants would be limited to around 2/3 of the cost of the work leaving the club with a sizeable shortfall they can far from afford.
